What We Fix

Why Is My Freezer Not Freezing?

The most common freezer call we get. My freezer is not freezing is almost always caused by one of four things: a failed evaporator fan motor that stops circulating cold air, a defrost system failure that has built up ice on the evaporator coils and blocked airflow, a bad start relay that prevents the compressor from running, or a refrigerant leak that has degraded the sealed system.

Freezer cold but not freezing is a specific and important distinction. If the compartment feels cool but can’t maintain 0°F, the defrost system or a temperature sensor is the most likely cause. That is a different repair than a freezer stopped working entirely.

Freezer not freezing but fridge is cold, freezer not working but fridge is running fine, and freezer working but not fridge cooling: all point toward a damper or evaporator fan issue between compartments rather than a sealed system failure. We provide freezer repair services across all residential types and brands. Book online to schedule fast.

Freezer Not Cold Enough

Running but failing to hold temperature is a specific pattern. The most common causes are dirty condenser coils, a worn door gasket letting warm air in, or a partial defrost failure where ice buildup is restricting airflow without fully blocking it. Freezer running but not cooling as expected after the compressor has been cycling for hours is a sign the sealed system may be compromised. We check the full system before recommending a repair path.

Freezer Frosting Up

Rapid frost buildup on the back wall, on food packaging, or blocking the interior vents means the automatic defrost system has stopped working. Every modern freezer runs a defrost cycle to melt frost off the evaporator coils. When the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer fails, frost accumulates between cycles until airflow is fully blocked and cooling stops.

A manual defrost by unplugging the unit for 24 hours will temporarily restore cooling. Freezer icing up will return within days if the failed component is not replaced. We test each defrost component individually to identify the actual failure before replacing anything.

Freezer Stopped Working

No cooling and a silent compressor is the pattern. The most likely causes are a failed start relay, a tripped thermal overload, or a control board failure. Freezer compressor not working after a clicking sound at startup almost always points to the start relay. It is a small and inexpensive component. We carry start relays for the most common brands and models on the truck.

If the compressor itself has failed, that is a different conversation. Refrigerator freezer repair involving compressor replacement is worth doing on units under 10 years old. On older units, we give you a straight repair versus replacement assessment before recommending any parts.

Garage Freezer Not Working

Garage freezers fail in specific ways that a standard freezer does not. In Denver Metro Area winters, ambient temperatures in an unheated garage can drop low enough that the freezer thermostat interprets the environment as already cold and stops running the compressor. The freezer stops freezing because the control system thinks it doesn’t need to. This is a thermostat or control board issue that is specific to units not designed for extreme ambient temperature ranges.

In summer, the opposite happens: a garage freezer works harder than it was designed to and the compressor can overheat. If your garage freezer stopped working after a temperature extreme, call a pro or book online and we will diagnose the specific failure.

Freezer Frosting Up and Door Not Sealing

Warm, moist air enters the compartment on every cycle when the door gasket has failed. That moisture freezes immediately on contact with the cold interior surfaces and the unit frosts up faster than the defrost system can handle. Door gasket failures are one of the most overlooked causes of both frost buildup and elevated energy bills. We inspect the full door seal and hinge alignment before any other diagnosis.

Freezer Making Noise

Different sounds point to different components. A clicking sound every few minutes with the compressor failing to start is almost always a failed start relay. A grinding or squealing sound from inside the freezer compartment is the evaporator fan blade hitting frost buildup. A loud sustained hum is typically the condenser fan or compressor overworking. We identify the source of the noise and repair or replace the affected part.

Chest Freezer, Upright Freezer, and Deep Freezer

Each type has its own failure profile. Chest freezers have fewer moving parts but the thermostat, start relay, and compressor still fail; chest freezer repair is typically straightforward. Deep freezer repair on garage or basement units often involves the same ambient temperature complications described above.

Upright freezer repair is the most common residential type we handle. Defrost system failures and evaporator fan motor replacements account for the majority of upright freezer calls. For built-in refrigerator-freezer combinations, the freezer section is covered under our refrigerator repair service. For restaurant or commercial walk-in units, see our commercial freezer repair page.

Freezer Repair Cost

The cost depends on the specific failure, the brand, and the parts required. A start relay replacement costs a fraction of a compressor replacement. Defrost heaters, thermostats, and door gaskets fall in the middle range. We diagnose before we quote. For walk-in freezer or commercial unit repair, see our walk-in freezer repair page. Freezer Repair FAQ

  • For most failures on units under 10 years old, repair makes strong financial sense. Defrost heaters, start relays, fan motors, and door gaskets are cost-effective repairs that extend the unit’s life significantly. The exception is compressor failure on an older unit: if the compressor has failed and the unit is over 12 years old, we will tell you that replacement may be the smarter call. We give you both numbers before recommending anything.

  • The most common causes are a failed evaporator fan motor, defrost system failure causing ice buildup on the coils, a bad start relay preventing the compressor from running, or a refrigerant leak. On Samsung and LG models specifically, defrost sensor failures are the most frequent diagnosis. We check the full system before recommending next steps.

  • Freezer is cold but not freezing is almost always a partial defrost failure or a temperature sensor giving the control board incorrect readings. The compressor is running but the unit can’t hold 0°F. Both are diagnosable and repairable on most major brands without a compressor replacement.

  • In Denver Metro Area winters, an unheated garage can get cold enough that the freezer thermostat stops signaling the compressor to run. The unit reads the ambient temperature as “already cold” and shuts down. This is a thermostat or control board issue specific to units not rated for extreme low ambient temperatures. It is not a compressor failure. We diagnose the exact cause and advise on the right repair or configuration fix.
