Common Dishwasher Problems We Fix
Dishwasher Not Draining
The most common dishwasher repair call we handle. Start with the filter: on most modern dishwashers the filter sits at the bottom of the tub and clogs with food debris faster than most homeowners expect. Remove it, rinse it under running water, and run a short cycle before calling for service. If the filter is clear and water still sits at the bottom after the cycle, the drain pump is the next component to test.
A failed drain pump motor hums but moves no water. A blocked or kinked drain hose is the third common cause. If the display shows an error code, it points straight to the faulty component. If your dishwasher won’t drain after a long cycle and shows no code, it’s almost always the filter or the drain pump.

Dishes Not Getting Clean
When the dishwasher runs a full cycle and dishes come out still dirty, the problem is almost always water pressure or spray coverage rather than the detergent. A clogged spray arm with blocked nozzles is the most frequent cause: remove each spray arm and clear the holes with a toothpick before calling for service. A failed wash pump that doesn’t generate sufficient pressure is the mechanical cause when spray arms are clear.
A malfunctioning water inlet valve that doesn’t fill the tub to the correct level produces the same result. If only the bottom rack comes out dirty, look for a blocked lower spray arm or debris built up around the lower rack rail that stops it from turning.

Dishwasher Not Cleaning Bottom Rack
When the upper rack comes out clean but the lower rack doesn’t, the lower spray arm is almost always blocked or has detached from its mount. This is a quick inspection and cleaning before calling for service. A circulation pump running at reduced capacity from wear produces uneven cleaning that affects the lower rack first because it’s furthest from the water pressure source. Check that tall items in the lower rack aren’t blocking the spray arm rotation before assuming a mechanical fault.

Dishwasher Leaking
Leak calls fall into three distinct categories depending on where the water appears. Water on the floor in front of the dishwasher during the cycle points to a worn door gasket that no longer seals the door perimeter. Water running down the inside of the door means the door gasket has a gap or tear.
A dishwasher leaking from the bottom is more serious: it points to a failed pump seal, a cracked sump assembly, or a loose drain hose connection at the pump. Water appearing from under the dishwasher only after the drain cycle points to the drain connection. We identify the exact leak source on every call before recommending any repair.

Dishwasher Not Starting
When pressing start produces no response at all, confirm the door is fully latched first. The door latch contains a switch that must register full closure before the control board will allow the cycle to begin. A latch that feels closed but hasn’t engaged the switch is the most common cause of a dishwasher not starting.
A child lock activated accidentally is the second most common cause. Check the display for a lock indicator. A failed control board is the mechanical cause when latch and lock are confirmed normal.
Power and control diagnostics
Dishwasher Not Filling With Water
When the dishwasher starts, the pump runs, but no water enters the tub, the water inlet valve has failed. The valve is an electrically operated solenoid that opens to allow water in at the start of each cycle. A valve that fails partially produces insufficient fill rather than no fill, which results in poor cleaning rather than a dry tub. If the tub stays dry and you hear a hum at the start of the cycle, that confirms the valve is receiving the electrical signal but can’t open mechanically.
Dishwasher Not Drying Dishes
Most modern dishwashers dry through a combination of a heating element and a rinse aid dispenser. When dishes come out wet, check the rinse aid reservoir first: empty rinse aid is responsible for a large share of the wet-dishes calls we get. On models with a heating element, a failed element leaves the tub cold at the end of the cycle.
On condensation-drying models like Bosch and Miele that don’t use a heating element, dishes dry through contact with the stainless steel tub walls. Opening the door immediately after the cycle ends before steam can condense is a common cause of wet dishes on these models.

Dishwasher Smells
Persistent odor from a dishwasher is almost always a maintenance issue before it’s a mechanical one. Food debris trapped in the filter, under the spray arms, and in the door gasket folds decays between cycles and produces the smell. Clean the filter, wipe down the gasket folds, and run an empty cycle with a cup of white vinegar in the bottom rack.
A smell that persists after a thorough cleaning points to a degraded door gasket trapping debris, or a drain line issue where standing water in the drain hose is allowing bacteria to grow. A high loop or air gap on the drain hose prevents backflow from the sink drain that causes persistent sulfur-like odor.
Dishwasher Leaving Residue
White residue or film on dishes after the cycle is almost always mineral deposits from hard water rather than a mechanical fault. How hard your water is depends on your utility, and it varies a lot across Denver Metro. Over time those minerals leave limescale on dishes and inside the tub.
Use a dishwasher cleaner monthly to clear mineral buildup. Residue that appears suddenly after years of clean results points to a failing detergent dispenser that’s not opening at the right point in the cycle, or a water inlet valve that’s restricting hot water flow.
Water supply and interior checks
Dishwasher Making Noise
Different sounds point to different components. Grinding during the wash cycle: debris caught in the wash pump impeller, so stop the cycle and check the filter and sump area. Loud thumping or banging: a spray arm hitting an item loaded too close to it, so rearrange the load before calling for service.
Rattling throughout the cycle: loose rack wheels or an unsecured item in the silverware basket. Humming with no water movement: a jammed drain pump or failed wash pump. A new noise that keeps coming back over several cycles always warrants a diagnostic call.
Dishwasher Door Not Closing
A door that won’t latch fully prevents the cycle from starting. Bent or misaligned door hinges are the most common mechanical cause on dishwashers that have been in use for several years. A worn door latch assembly that no longer catches the strike plate is the second cause.
If the door won’t close and the tub looks slightly out of line, the dishwasher has often shifted in its cabinet opening. It needs to be re-leveled before the door geometry will allow full closure.
