What We Handle
New Refrigerator Water Line Installation
For a new refrigerator, the installation connects the household cold water supply to the back of the unit through a dedicated supply line and shut off valve. The connection point is almost always an existing cold water pipe under the sink or in the basement. We connect a supply line to the existing shut off valve at the source, route it to the refrigerator’s water inlet valve, and test the full system under pressure before the job is complete.
A standard connection with an accessible water source typically takes under an hour. If there is no cold water supply and valve within reach, a licensed plumber needs to add one first.
Refrigerator Water Line Repair
A leaking supply line is one of the most common calls we get alongside new installations. A leak at the wall connection is almost always a loose compression fitting or a cracked plastic line that has become brittle over time. A leak at the back of the refrigerator itself points to the connection at the water inlet valve or a damaged section of line where the refrigerator was moved without disconnecting the supply first.

Choosing the Right Water Line
Three materials are used for residential refrigerator water supply lines. Braided stainless steel is the most durable and least likely to kink or crack. Copper tubing is reliable and long-lasting but requires proper compression fittings and careful bending to avoid stress fractures.
Plastic tubing is the least expensive option but degrades over time and is the most common source of refrigerator water line leaks in older installations. We use braided stainless or copper on all new installations. If your existing installation uses plastic tubing and you are having repeat leak issues, replacement with a higher-quality line is the most practical long-term fix.
Refrigerator Water Line Shut Off Valve
Every installation should include a dedicated shut off valve at the supply connection point. This allows the water supply to be isolated in seconds if a leak develops, without shutting off water to the rest of the house. Older installations sometimes use a saddle valve that pierces the supply pipe rather than a proper tee connection: saddle valves are prone to clogging and leaking over time. If we find a saddle valve, we point it out: replacing it with a proper tee and ball valve is work on the house pipe, and a licensed plumber should do it.
Refrigerator Water Dispenser Not Working
If the dispenser doesn’t work after a new refrigerator is installed, the cause is almost always simple. Either the water line isn’t fully connected, the shut off valve is only partially open, or the refrigerator’s internal water filter needs to be primed. Run the dispenser for 2-3 minutes continuously after installation to clear air from the line and prime the filter before assuming a fault.
If no water flows at all after priming, confirm the shut off valve is fully open and check that the line isn’t kinked behind the refrigerator. On Samsung and LG French door models, the line routes through the freezer door and can freeze inside it, which needs a different diagnostic approach. On older refrigerators with no built-in ice maker, adding an aftermarket ice maker requires both the appliance installation and the water line connection.
