One of the most frequent calls we handle. Washing machine not draining leaves standing water in the drum at the end of the cycle and soaking wet clothes that can’t be spun out. The most common cause is a clogged drain pump filter on front-load machines, it traps coins, hair ties, and lint until water can’t pass through. A kinked or blocked drain hose is the second cause. A failed drain pump motor itself is the third, usually signaled by a humming sound during the drain cycle with no water movement. On LG front-loaders, an OE error code confirms a drainage fault. On Whirlpool and Maytag top-loaders, an F21 error code means the drain cycle took more than 8 minutes. On Samsung front-loaders, a 5E error code points to the same issue. Washer not draining and washer not spinning often occur together because most washers won’t run the spin cycle until the tub is empty.

The process of repairing a washers
When the drum won’t spin at all or clothes come out dripping wet after a full cycle, the root cause is usually one of four things: a failed lid switch on top-loaders that prevents the spin cycle from engaging, a broken drive belt that disconnects the motor from the drum, a worn motor that can no longer generate enough torque to spin a full load, or a blocked drain pump that prevents the spin safety interlock from releasing. Washing machine not spinning on a front-loader is often a door latch issue: if the latch doesn’t confirm a sealed door, the machine won’t spin. All of these are same-day repairs on most major brands.
Our technician is repairing a washer
Washing machine leaking can originate from several points depending on where the water appears. A puddle at the front of a front-loader usually means a worn door seal (boot gasket) that no longer creates a watertight closure. Water underneath the machine typically comes from a cracked or loose drain hose connection or a leaking water inlet valve. Water at the back is most often a loose water supply hose connection. Washer leaking water during the spin cycle specifically points to an oversudsing issue: too much detergent in an HE machine creates foam that pushes water past the door seal.
Our technicians work
A washer that shakes violently during the spin cycle is one of the most alarming washer symptoms, but it’s rarely a serious mechanical failure. The most common cause is simply an uneven load: a single heavy item like a comforter throws the drum off balance and the machine can’t compensate. Always redistribute the load first. If the problem recurs with balanced loads, worn shock absorbers (front-loaders) or damaged suspension rods (top-loaders) are the mechanical cause. Both components cushion the drum during spin and wear out over time. A machine walking across the floor during spin also indicates the unit is not properly leveled.
On top-load washers, washer not agitating usually means the agitator dogs (the plastic directional couplings inside the agitator) have worn out. This is one of the most common top-loader repairs and one of the least expensive. The motor runs, the drum fills, but the agitator doesn’t move. On impeller-style HE top-loaders without an agitator post, a failed drive belt or motor coupling is the more likely cause. On front-loaders, a drum that tumbles but doesn’t reverse direction typically points to a control board fault.
Nothing at all when you press start points to an electrical fault. Check the circuit breaker and power outlet first. If power is confirmed, the lid switch on top-loaders is the most likely culprit: when this switch fails, the machine thinks the lid is open and won’t start. On front-loaders, the door latch assembly performs the same function. A failed control board is a less common but possible cause, usually preceded by error codes or intermittent behavior. Washing machine won’t start after a power surge often responds to a full power cycle: unplug for 5 minutes, then restart.
Washer not cleaning clothes properly is usually a maintenance issue rather than a mechanical failure. The most common causes: too much detergent creating residue that redeposits on clothes, a pump filter so clogged that water drains too slowly to flush the load properly, or a drum bearing failure that prevents the drum from reaching full agitation speed. Washer smells musty and deposits that smell on clothes after washing point to mold buildup inside the drum and door seal, most common on front-loaders that sit with the door closed between cycles.
Mold and mildew inside the drum is one of the most common complaints on front-load washers. Warm water and residual detergent create ideal conditions inside the sealed drum. The door seal is the primary accumulation point: the rubber bellows fold inward and trap moisture and lint. A clogged pump filter that holds standing water accelerates the problem. Washer smells musty is typically resolved by cleaning the drum, seal, and filter thoroughly and running a hot maintenance wash. If the smell returns quickly, the door seal itself may need replacement due to mold penetration into the rubber.
Different sounds point to different components. Loud banging or thumping during spin: unbalanced load or worn shock absorbers. Grinding or rumbling: drum bearing failure, most serious noise type and gets worse over time. Squealing: worn drive belt or motor bearing. Clicking during the cycle: control board relay switching, normal in small amounts. Rattling from the bottom: loose items trapped under the drum or a failing drain pump impeller with debris caught in it. Washing machine making noise at startup only, then quieting: motor startup issue or a worn drive belt that slips at initial load.
A front-loader door that won’t unlock after the cycle is typically a door latch relay fault or a control board error that doesn’t send the unlock signal. Most front-loaders have a manual release tab inside the kick panel at the bottom front. Pulling this tab releases the door without power. If the door locks mid-cycle with water inside, a pressure switch fault is likely: the machine thinks water is still present and won’t unlock for safety. Washer door won’t open on a top-loader is usually a lid lock solenoid failure, common on Whirlpool, Maytag, and Kenmore platforms.
Washer error codes cut diagnostic time significantly. Write down any code before calling. The most common codes we resolve: LG washer LE code (motor or hall sensor fault, one of the most frequent LG calls), Samsung washer error codes including 5E (drain fault), UE (unbalanced load), and DC (door closure). Washer error codes on Whirlpool and Maytag: F21 (drain), F5 (lid lock), F7 (motor). These codes point directly to the component that needs testing, saving diagnostic time and getting your machine running faster.

A clogged drain pump filter is the leading cause on front-loaders. On top-loaders, a blocked drain hose or failed drain pump motor is more common. Check the filter access panel at the bottom front first. If clearing the filter doesn’t resolve it, the pump motor needs testing. Washing machine not draining combined with an error code gives the most direct path to diagnosis.
A failed lid switch on top-loaders prevents the spin cycle from starting at all. On front-loaders, a faulty door latch is the equivalent issue. A worn drive belt causes the drum to spin weakly or not at all. Washer not spinning after a drain fault usually means the machine is protecting itself: fix the drainage issue first and spin usually resumes automatically.
Washer leaking water at the front of a front-loader is almost always the door seal. Underneath the machine: a loose or cracked drain hose. At the back: supply hose connections. During spin only: oversudsing from too much HE detergent.
