Samsung Washer Won’t Spin: Front-Load and Top-Load Fixes

A Samsung washer not spinning leaves clothes wet in the drum and the dryer waiting. Samsung's four platforms handle this differently: WF front-load, WA top-load, WV FlexWash, and WD WashTower. This guide maps each platform's fault tree, explains the codes, and covers owner checks and when to call a technician.

Samsung Washer Won’t Spin: Front-Load and Top-Load Fixes

What the Display Is Telling You: Start Here

A code routes you to the right section; no code means door, Rinse Hold, then the drain-before-spin interlock.

Step 0: Read the Error Code Before Anything Else

A Samsung washer spin cycle not working stores a fault code on the board even when the display has cleared. On Wi-Fi models, the SmartThings Smart Care scan retrieves it; note the code before unplugging.

Samsung Washer Not Spinning, No Error Code: What to Check

No error code on the display narrows the fault to three checks: door or lid seal, Rinse Hold, and pump filter cleaning. No spin indicator lit means Rinse Hold is active; select any speed to exit. If drainage also fails, the washer not draining guide covers that combination.

Use Spin Only to Isolate the Fault

A full-speed drum on Spin Only means the spin mechanism is intact. If Spin Only also fails, the motor, door lock, or control board is the cause.

  1. Power on the washer.
  2. Press the Spin button or turn the cycle selector dial to Spin Only.
  3. Select a spin speed: Extra High, High, Medium, or Low (not No Spin, which defeats the test).
  4. Press and hold Start/Pause.
  5. Watch whether the drum turns at full speed.

Door Not Latching: The Check That Costs Nothing

Door lock on front-loaders and lid switch on top-loaders are gates the control board requires before spin. When either gate fails to close, a Samsung washer stops before spin cycle can start.

Front-Load Models: How the Door Lock Controls Spin Entry

WF series and WW front-loaders need the door lock to signal closed before spin starts. Fabric in the gasket or a worn latch breaks that signal on a Samsung front load washer not spinning. I look for fabric in the door seal first; it clears without tools and is the faster check.

Top-Load Models: The Lid Switch That Gates the Drum

WA top-loaders use a mechanical lid switch or an electronic lid lock; unplug, press the plunger, check resistance for the switch. For Samsung top load washer not spinning on electronic-lock models, the lid lock must engage before the Digital Inverter Motor receives the spin command.

3E Code: The Motor Needs a Technician’s Eye

A 3E motor error means the board cannot confirm the drive motor is running. Samsung documents two meanings: motor error or voltage error, model-dependent.

On a 3E call, we reseat the hall-sensor connector before ordering any part. If it was loose, that is the whole repair. Ordering the sensor first costs a part and a second visit.

What the Hall Sensor Does and Why It Fails

The hall sensor tracks drum RPM from the motor stator; when it fails, the board fires 3E. The connector vibrates loose before the sensor fails, which is why we reseat it first.

Power Cycle First, Then Call If It Returns

Unplug for three minutes. A transient fault produces the 3E code and the power cycle clears it. If 3E returns, the connector and motor stator need a technician.

Samsung Washer Won’t Spin, Just Hums: What That Means

A humming motor with no drum movement points to a seized drum bearing or a seized motor, since Samsung front-loaders drive the drum directly with no belt or coupler between them. Unplug the machine first. Turn the drum by hand; if it will not turn freely, or grinds as it turns, the fault is mechanical rather than electrical.

dC, BE2, SUd, Ur, Cb, and Rinse Hold: What Each Means

Samsung publishes two meanings for dC and BE2 without specifying which applies to your model; the model manual settles it. SUd, Ur, Cb, and Rinse Hold are not faults at all.

dC: Door Error or Unbalanced Load, Depending on Your Model

The model manual resolves which meaning applies. Press the door closed and check the gasket for the door variant; redistribute laundry for the unbalanced one. If dC returns after the door is seated, the door lock assembly needs replacement. A Samsung washer spin cycle stopped mid cycle on a dC code means the board stopped spin before the gate closed.

BE2: Check for a Jammed Button Before Calling Anyone

Press each panel button firmly, one at a time. Samsung documents BE2 as a jammed button error on some models, a MEMS sensor error on others. If one was stuck, the code clears; if not, the MEMS sensor needs a technician.

SUd, Ur, Cb, and Rinse Hold: Not Faults at All

SUd pauses while suds dissolve; use HE detergent. Ur fires when the drum cannot balance; redistribute the load, but Ur on normal loads points to tub suspension (the washer shaking violently guide covers that). Cb indicates calibration mode normal operation; it runs automatically after a power interruption and completes on its own.

Samsung documents Rinse Hold as a setting that “pauses draining and spinning, keeping laundry in water”; no code shows. Select any active spin speed to exit. The Spin selector cycles past No Spin into Rinse Hold; check its position if laundry comes out wet with no code.

Platform Notes: Top-Load, FlexWash, and WashTower Differences

On all four platforms the symptom is the same: a Samsung washer not spinning, clothes wet in the drum, each with its own fault tree. Samsung is one of the three brands we are called to most across Denver Metro, so these fault trees see regular use.

Top-Load WA Models: Lid Lock Behavior and a Recall Check

WA series models use VRT Plus technology. Pre-2017 WA top-loaders need a recall check first. CPSC recall 17-028 (November 2016) covers 34 specific top-load Samsung models sold March 2011 through November 2016. CPSC documented the hazard as: “The washing machine top can detach unexpectedly from the washing machine chassis during use.”

Check your model number against the CPSC recall notice, which lists all 34 models. CPSC 23-080 (December 2022) covers certain WA49B through WA55A series for a fire hazard; Samsung provides a free software remedy.

FlexWash and WashTower: Both Follow the Front-Load Path

WashTower WD and WH share the direct drive motor, door lock, and hall sensor with WF front-loaders; FlexWash WV’s main drum follows the same fault tree. I check the drum by hand first on WashTower calls. If the drum won’t turn by hand, stop and unplug the machine before going further. A Samsung washer drum not turning under power is a different fault from one that hums.

When to Call Wilson and Myers

Door checks and code resets settle many of these calls without a technician. Book a diagnostic for a 3E code returning after a power cycle, or a drum that will not turn with the door latched and no code on the display.

Frequently Asked Questions About Samsung Washer Not Spinning

  • Why won't my Samsung washer spin?

A Samsung washer not spinning comes down to four gates: door or lid lock, drain, load balance, and motor signal. Check the display for an error code, verify the door is seated, confirm the drain completed. All three clear with the drum still motionless means a motor circuit fault.

  • What does dC mean on a Samsung washer?

Samsung documents dC as one of two meanings, model-dependent: door error or unbalanced load. Check your user manual to confirm which applies. For the door variant, press the door firmly and clear the gasket. For the unbalanced variant, redistribute laundry and retry the spin cycle.

  • What does 3E mean on a Samsung washer?

Samsung documents 3E as one of two meanings, model-dependent: motor error or voltage error; confirm with your manual. Unplug for three minutes; a transient fault clears this way. If 3E returns, the hall sensor connector or motor stator needs a technician. Do not open the motor housing without disassembly tools.

  • How do I run a Spin Only cycle on my Samsung washer?

Spin Only removes water from laundry. Press the Spin button or turn the cycle dial to Spin Only, select a spin speed (not No Spin), then press and hold Start/Pause. If the drum spins at full speed, the mechanism is intact. If it stays still, the fault warrants a technician diagnostic.

  • Is my Samsung top load washer recalled?

CPSC recall 17-028 (November 2016) covers 34 specific top-load Samsung models sold March 2011 through November 2016; the hazard is the top detaching from the chassis unexpectedly. Use the recall model lookup at Samsung’s recall page. CPSC 23-080 (December 2022) covers WA49B through WA55A series for a fire hazard; Samsung provides a free software remedy.

  • What causes a Samsung front load washer to not spin?

On Samsung front load washer not spinning calls, three fault points repeat: door lock not engaging, drain interlock triggered by a blocked drain pump filter, and a 3E code. Clean the drain pump filter at the bottom access panel. If the door latches and no code shows, run Spin Only.

  • Why is my Samsung washer stuck on spin cycle?

A Samsung washer stuck on spin cycle has usually not drained fully, or the drum failed to balance during spin-up. Check the drain pump filter and redistribute the load. A dC code points to a door latch or load-balance fault; Ur means the load is uneven, so redistribute and retry.

  • What is Rinse Hold on a Samsung washer?

Samsung documents Rinse Hold as a setting that “pauses draining and spinning, keeping laundry in water.” A washer in Rinse Hold shows no error code; laundry sits wet in the drum. Select any active spin speed to exit. Cycling Spin past No Spin reaches Rinse Hold without a lit indicator.
