Littleton, Colorado stayed a small town for sixty years and then grew four times over in a single decade. Littleton was founded in 1862 and incorporated in 1890, in what was then still Colorado Territory, with about 245 residents. It grew slowly for the next sixty years. Then the aerospace plant arrived, and between 1950 and 1960 the population rose from roughly three thousand to nearly fourteen thousand.
That is more than three hundred percent in ten years, and the housing built to absorb it is still standing. Whole neighborhoods share the same floor plans, the same kitchen dimensions and the same utility room placement. For us that is useful: a diagnostic in one house often tells us what we will find in the next street over.
The older core survives around West Main Street, a protected historic district with buildings running back to 1890 in styles from Italianate to Art Moderne. In 2025 residents voted by a narrow margin to limit denser infill in single-family areas, so the city’s housing is not about to turn over. The houses we work in now are the ones we will be working in for a long time.
Littleton grew outward from Main Street in stages. The older blocks sit near the center, and some of the newest sit toward Chatfield.
Downtown runs along West Main Street and Alamo Avenue, with Main Street buildings from 1890 on. The homes around it, which realtors call Old Littleton, mostly date from the 1910s onward. Louthan Heights, on Louthan Street near downtown, is a local historic district of sixteen residences. Here the house is usually far older than any appliance inside it.
Aberdeen Village, between West Littleton Boulevard and South Broadway, is mostly 1950s and 1960s ranch homes on tree-lined streets. Arapaho Hills, bounded by Arrowhead Road, West Berry Avenue, South Manitou Road and South Lowell Boulevard, is a mid-century modern subdivision on the National Register. Sterne Park, Ketring Park around Ketring Lake, and Heritage, the largest of the city’s mapped neighborhoods, round out the established single-family stock.
Southpark, between West Mineral Avenue and South Santa Fe Drive, began in 1982 with two-story homes and includes the Peninsula. Southbridge, around Mineral and South Broadway, holds two-story homes with three-car garages, including The Preserve at Southbridge from the early 1990s. Riverwalk, along the South Platte, adds condo and townhome complexes from the mid-1980s on, some of them 55 and over.
Coventry is a gated neighborhood between West Bowles Avenue and South Sheridan Way, with larger homes on quarter to half-acre lots from 1975 to 1984. The Hamlet at Columbine, near Bowles and South Platte Canyon Road, holds larger two-story homes from the early 1980s into the early 1990s. It sits inside the city despite its name, and the unincorporated Columbine area lies farther west.
Bow Mar South is a lakeside neighborhood built from the 1960s to the late 1990s, with a private lake, pool and tennis. It is separate from the Town of Bow Mar.
The Polo Reserve, gated between West Mineral Avenue and South Platte Canyon Road, holds large homes on half-acre to one-acre lots from the late 1990s. Trailmark, south of C-470 off South Wadsworth Boulevard, went up in the early 2000s surrounded by open space. That spread runs from 1890s storefronts to houses from the early 2000s. A kitchen in Aberdeen Village and one in Trailmark ask very different things of a refrigerator.
Call while the appliance is failing rather than after it has stopped. Watch for cooling that drifts, a cycle taking twice as long as it used to, or a burner that lights on the third try. These are the cheapest repairs and the ones most likely to close on the first visit. For any refrigerator running warm, call sooner, because a compressor working against a failing seal tends to take itself out.
For a new appliance, call before it is delivered. In a mid-century kitchen the real question is often whether a current model fits the opening at all, and a short conversation saves both a return trip and an unnecessary purchase.
