The center is the oldest ground. Capitol Hill and Cheesman Park pair pre-1940 houses with mid-century apartment buildings, so many kitchens there sit inside larger buildings. Congress Park was platted in the late 1880s and mixes early-1900s homes with small apartment buildings. Country Club, beside the Denver Country Club, keeps about 380 large pre-1940 homes, while Cherry Creek mixes older houses with 1990s to 2010s rebuilds.
Northwest Denver starts at LoHi, built up mostly in the 2000s and 2010s, and runs through Highland to West Highland and Berkeley. Both are mostly single-family streets built before 1950, with modern infill, and Tennyson Street runs through Berkeley. Sloan Lake, on the line with Lakewood, Edgewater and Wheat Ridge, has houses from before 1940 through the 1970s around the lake park.
To the northeast, Five Points and its Curtis Park blocks are among the oldest in the city, with many apartment buildings added since 2010. Park Hill, between Colorado Blvd and Quebec St, is mostly single-family homes from before 1950. Farther out, Central Park (formerly Stapleton) rose on the old airport site in the 2000s and 2010s. Green Valley Ranch, toward the airport, is mostly 1990s to 2010s.
East of Colorado Blvd, Hilltop and Crestmoor were developed in the 1940s and 1950s, and many original houses there have given way to large new homes. Montclair keeps a brick and stone core from the 1880s and 1890s among mid-century houses. Lowry, on the former Air Force base, is mostly late-1990s to 2010s construction.
South Denver centers on Washington Park, where most houses are brick from 1900 to 1940. Platt Park, around Old South Pearl Street, has Craftsman bungalows and Victorians. Belcaro has large ranch houses on large lots, and Bonnie Brae mixes Tudor, Spanish and ranch homes on curving streets. Virginia Village is mostly 1950s to 1970s, and the single-family core of Southmoor Park is 1950s and 1960s.
The southwest is mostly post-war. Harvey Park was annexed in 1954, and nearly 4,000 ranch homes went up there by 1957. Bear Valley, farther out, is mostly 1960s and 1970s. Closer in on the west side, Barnum runs from pre-1940 houses to the 1950s, with some duplexes and small multiplexes.
Across all of it, the decade a house went up says more about the connections behind its appliances than the brand on the front. It is the first thing our technicians read when they walk in.
Call while the appliance is failing rather than after it has stopped. Watch for cooling that drifts, a cycle taking twice as long as it used to, or a burner that lights on the third try. These are the cheapest repairs and the ones most likely to close on the first visit. For any refrigerator running warm, call sooner: a compressor working against a failing seal tends to take itself out.
For a new appliance, call before it is delivered. In an older Denver house a short conversation about doorways and connections can save a return visit, and occasionally saves you from buying a machine that will not fit.
