There Is No Vent, So There Is Nothing to Clean

Miele calls these machines tumble dryers, and the domestic line is heat pump only. Moisture leaves the clothes and goes into a sealed circuit inside the cabinet, not into a duct through your wall.

That rules out an entire upsell. If anyone quotes you vent cleaning on a Miele, the service does not apply to your machine. The only vented dryer Miele publishes is a Professional machine, the PDR 908 [EL].

Miele Dryer Not Drying Clothes

This is the call we take most often on the brand, and it usually starts at a filter most owners never open. Miele runs a third filter past the two lint filters, and calls it the plinth filter.

It sits in front of the heat exchanger, behind a spring-open panel at the bottom left. Miele’s warning is blunt. Lint blows into the heat exchanger unfiltered through edges that do not sit properly, and the obstruction is permanent.

  • Poor fit, the first of four signs Miele gives for replacing it
  • Deformation, where the filter no longer holds its shape
  • Cracks, tears or indentations in the filter material
  • White residues, or residues of other colors, which mean lint is getting in unfiltered at the edges

The residue sign is the useful one, because it turns a filter that looks fine into a measured fail. If residues return soon after a clean, Miele dryer plinth filter replacement is the next step.

Before that, Miele publishes a reactivation wash: separately from laundry, no detergent, a short program at 104°F (40°C) and 600 rpm maximum. Never refit it dripping wet. Miele’s own article calls this part the toe-kick filter.

The cooling fins behind the bottom right grille are a second finned area, and Miele releases that grille with a spoon handle. A Miele heat pump dryer takes too long to dry when either one is blocked.

Miele Dryer F66 Error

F66 is the same problem surfaced as a code, and Miele says so directly. It is displayed in many cases because the lint filters or the plinth filter have not been cleaned, or have been cleaned insufficiently.

  1. The lint filters are soiled
  2. The plinth filter in front of the heat exchanger is soiled
  3. The drum is overloaded
  4. The ventilation grille under the door is obstructed
  5. Ventilation to and from the appliance is insufficient in a small room
  6. The plinth filter is encrusted with white residue from too much detergent
  7. The plinth filter is deformed or torn
  8. A technical fault, where the list stops being a homeowner job

Miele Dryer Leaking Water

Miele gives you two ways to handle condensate, and the leak depends on which one your machine uses. The condensate container holds 1.27 gal (4.8 l) and lights an indicator when full.

If the Miele dryer empty out container light stays on after you empty it, look at the drain hose. Miele’s published second cause is a kink in it, behind the machine where nobody looks.

The plumbed path is Miele’s integrated condensed water drainage, a hose to a sink or drain outlet. The non-return valve is missing, incorrectly installed or clogged, and water runs back into the tumble dryer. The other published cause is a drain shared with the washing machine.

A third case is water right after a heat exchanger clean. Miele’s published cause there is a condenser system that is not properly closed.

A Miele Dryer Is a Sealed Refrigerant System

The heat does not come from an element. Miele describes the heat pump as a compressor connected to a pipeline system. A capillary tube sits in that circuit, with one heat exchanger that runs hot at the rear and cool at the front.

The refrigerant is R134a, published as 1.036 lbs (0.470 kg) on the product page and 16.6 oz (0.47 kg) in the manual. Those are the same charge in two units. Miele tells you to use care cleaning the condenser coil fins or the evaporator coil fins.

Seven of the twenty-eight fault codes Miele publishes for its tumble dryers sit on that circuit. Refrigerant temperature sensors report from three points, and a short or open circuit at any stops the machine.

  • F1 and F2 report at the refrigerant temperature sensor itself
  • F156 and F157 report downstream of the condenser
  • F206 and F207 report downstream of the compressor
  • F159 is a compressor start-up fault, and Miele dryer F159 compressor fault is a service call rather than a reset

Miele marks all of those as a technical fault an owner cannot remedy. F158 looks like it belongs and does not: Miele publishes it as an overheated appliance. Humming or buzzing is Miele’s own no-fault entry, because the compressor is simply running.


What the Display Is Telling You

Miele publishes a full fault index for the tumble dryer, and twenty-eight of the entries are F codes. It is the generic tumble dryer index, so it addresses a condenser dryer as well as a heat pump machine.

Miele dryer error code F55 has four published remedies and none is a program change. Do not exceed the maximum load, spin faster, clean the lint filters. Miele dryer drum not turning points at F53, and Miele dryer will not start can land on several entries at once.

Write the display down before you clear it, because it may not show twice. Close to half of Miele’s dryer articles end with no remedy required, and we have seen owners book a visit for those.

A 120 Volt Dryer on a NEMA 5-15 Plug

Miele’s manual has the machine on a NEMA 5-15 socket at 120 V, 60 Hz and 15 A, and recommends a dedicated circuit.

So a 120 volt dryer does not simply plug into the 240 volt receptacle your laundry room was built with. Miele sells a connection adapter with a NEMA 14-30 plug and two NEMA 5-15 outlets, fused at 15 A. It is ordered from Miele and never included.

That adapter is why a stacked pair can share one receptacle. These dryers are stackable and slot-in, and a stacking kit is a real Miele part rather than a strap. Miele washer dryer repair calls often start with the pair already stacked.


Open the Door and Read the Data Plate

Miele puts the data plate where you see it with the door open, and says so twice in one manual. It carries the model identifier and the serial number Miele asks for.

It is also the only place Miele publishes the connection voltage, power rating and fuse for your machine. There is no general Miele model number decoder, so the plate is the whole answer.

Two published facts matter before you decide. Miele’s five-year sealed system term is written for refrigerators, wine coolers and freezers, while tumble dryers get two years. The 20-year figure is a test result, 5,000 drying cycles at five a week for fifty weeks.
