A Whirlpool washer and dryer sold as a pair share a name and four digits in the model number. They share no parts, no control board and no fault vocabulary.
So this page covers the set: how it is numbered, how it goes into a room, and what the warranty says. Each machine keeps its own page, Whirlpool washer repair and Whirlpool dryer repair.
Whirlpool’s dryer page features WFW6720RW and WED6720RW together and calls them a front load washer and dryer set. The four digits are the match, and the three letters say what each machine is.
A Whirlpool top load washer carries WTW and a Whirlpool front load washer WFW. WED is a Whirlpool electric dryer, and WGD the same machine built as a Whirlpool gas dryer. WTW4307SW and WED4307SW are the pair Whirlpool calls top load matching.
Older sets wear a series badge instead: a Whirlpool Cabrio washer beside a Whirlpool Cabrio dryer, a Whirlpool Duet washer beside a Whirlpool Duet dryer.
None of that makes the pair one machine. So is Whirlpool a good washer and dryer to keep? That is two questions, because a fault in one half says nothing about the other.
| Prefix | What carries it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| WTW | Top load washer | WTW4307SW |
| WFW | Front load washer | WFW4720RW |
| WED | Vented electric dryer | WED4307SW |
| WGD | Vented gas dryer | WGD4307SW |
| WHD | Ventless heat pump dryer | WHD560CHW |
| WEF and WGF | Laundry Tower, electric and gas | WEF5727TW |
| WFC | All in one washer dryer | WFC682CLW |
Only half the line stacks. Whirlpool prints Stackable on its front load washers and on none of its three current top load models. A Whirlpool stackable washer and dryer therefore starts with a front loader.
Those machines also carry a 33 inch closet depth fit. A Whirlpool stacked washer and dryer built as one cabinet at the factory is a Laundry Tower. WashTower is LG’s name for its own product.
A Whirlpool washer dryer combo is different again. One drum washes and then dries, so there is no second machine to fall back on.
The same three characters can name different parts on two machines standing next to each other. Whirlpool keeps a separate code tree for top load washers, front load washers, standalone dryers and the Laundry Tower.
The Tower then splits again. Its washer branch runs to 54 articles with codes in neither standalone tree. Its dryer branch redefines several dryer codes.
So a code is not an answer until the machine is named. Whirlpool washer and dryer troubleshooting therefore starts on two different pages. A Whirlpool washer not spinning and a Whirlpool washer not draining are one page’s work. A Whirlpool dryer not heating and a Whirlpool dryer not starting are the other’s.
Whirlpool documents the washer, the dryer and the Laundry Tower apart from each other.
On a top loader Whirlpool labels the Whirlpool washer lid switch fault as a door switch.
A Whirlpool dryer heating element and a Whirlpool dryer thermal fuse both present as a turning drum and no heat.
The number we ask for first is not in the same place on any two cabinets. Whirlpool publishes a location per format, and a stacked set carries one plate for both machines.
Read it before calling anyone. It picks the manual, the parts list and the warranty document.
Whirlpool’s washer manuals ask for a 120 volt supply at 15 or 20 amps, on a breaker serving that machine alone. An electric dryer needs a separate 30 amp circuit, fused on both sides of the line.
That is two breakers for the dryer and another for the washer, which is why one can tumble without heating.
| Cabinet | Whirlpool's stated location |
|---|---|
| Top load washer | Beneath the lid, on the tub rim |
| Front load washer | Inside the door, on the rim of the opening |
| All in one washer dryer | On the door frame, just inside the door |
| Stacked laundry | Inside the dryer door |
| Pedestal, washer or dryer | On the storage drawer, inside or outside wall |
Whirlpool’s per model document lookup returns the same file for the washer, both dryer fuels, the Laundry Tower and the all in one. Heat pump dryers return a different part number whose covered and not covered text reads the same.
So the laundry room gets one answer. One year from the date of delivery, parts and labor, and nothing after it. The second tier lists refrigerators only, and nothing in a laundry room is on it.
Three different temperature floors apply inside one unheated room, and Whirlpool prints all three. A washer must not be installed, stored or operated below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. A full size heat pump dryer wants the room above 45 degrees. The compact heat pump asks for 41 to 95 degrees.
Vented gas and electric dryers print no floor at all. So a Whirlpool washer and dryer in an unheated garage can stop working in January with nothing broken.
Most laundry rooms we visit across the Denver Metro Area are basements, garages or hallway closets. In a closet the 33 inch depth becomes the whole decision.
Four checks cost nothing and settle a fair number of laundry calls before they start. None needs a tool, and Whirlpool asks for all four itself. Past them the work needs instruments.
We have seen one pattern often enough to ask about it: the complaint is the dryer and the cause is the washer. Whirlpool documents excess suds cutting a washer’s spin speed, and a wetter load takes longer to dry.
Whirlpool publishes a repair parts list per model, so Whirlpool washer parts and Whirlpool dryer parts are named before anything is ordered. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts.

Only if the washer is a front loader. Whirlpool prints Stackable on its front load washers and on none of its three current top load models.
The factory built version is the Laundry Tower, one cabinet rather than two machines.
Close to it. Owners search how to reset Whirlpool washer and how to reset Whirlpool dryer separately, and the answer is the same.
Take the circuit off for five minutes, restore it, then run a short cycle. A code that comes straight back was never a glitch.
No. The pair shares four digits in the model number and nothing mechanical, so the two machines run on separate circuits and fail separately.
Buying a Whirlpool washer and dryer set matches the look and the numbering. It does not connect the machines.
A Whirlpool all in one washer dryer is one drum. It washes and then dries in the same cabinet, ventless, with no duct to the outside.
So it has no second machine to fall back on. Whirlpool rates WFC682CLW at about three and a half hours a load.
One year from the date of delivery, parts and labor, on both halves. The same document covers the washer, both dryer fuels, the Laundry Tower and the all in one.
There is no second tier for laundry at all.
Nothing in the pair forces it. The two machines share no parts, no control board and no warranty clock beyond their own delivery dates.
A Whirlpool front load washer and dryer bought together will reach the same age together, which is a separate argument.
