A Kenmore dryer is read from its model plate. The plate family, the prefix plus the digits after it, sets its codes, sensors and duct limits. On current 405 models, E4 still allows timed drying; on a Kenmore Elite 796, CHECK VENT flags the house duct, not the dryer. Wilson & Myers repairs gas and electric Kenmore and Kenmore Elite dryers at your home.
Two numbers get called a Kenmore dryer’s model number: the retail number on Kenmore.com, such as 26-69162, and the plate number on the machine. A technician needs that plate number, prefix included; it looks like 405.6916#. A # or * stands in for digits that vary by model.
Here is where to find Kenmore dryer model numbers: the 405.6916# and 405.8227# guides put the data label behind the door.
Keep the plate intact: Kenmore’s warranty excludes service when it is missing or altered. Your Kenmore dryer troubleshooting manual is the Use & Care Guide for that plate.
No primary source we found names the maker of a current 405 or 263 dryer. Use Kenmore’s guide, not another brand’s. Our Kenmore brand page explains how the plate and its prefix work, and lists the prefixes on current Kenmore guides.
No Kenmore Elite dryer is sold today. Kenmore Elite dryer repair is always work on an older model. Kenmore washers and laundry centers sit beside this page under Kenmore laundry appliances.
Each symptom below carries Kenmore’s own first explanation, and several are a setting or the house supply rather than a failed part.
Write down the plate number and any code first. The checks below come from Kenmore’s own guides. Kenmore’s answer to how to fix a Kenmore dryer that won’t heat starts at the house supply, not at a part.
Every current 405 guide prints just three codes: C9, E4 and E5. C9 and E5 mean stop using the dryer. E4 is the mild one: Timed Cycles still work until the sensor is replaced.
The Kenmore dryer error codes on older Kenmore Elite models differ by family, so each family has its own table. Read each code against your own family. On a current 405, E4 and E5 are sensor failures; the compact’s E04 and E05 carry no stated meaning.
One contradiction sits in the 796.9196* guide. Its code table lists gAS for a closed gas supply, while the same page says a dryer without gas runs with no code. Check both gas shutoffs whether or not gAS appears.
The Kenmore 417.8112* prints no code table. When it will not start, its guide names a tripped thermal limiter and says to call for its replacement.
| Code | Kenmore's meaning | Keep using it? | What Kenmore says to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| C9 | The control board (PCB) failed | No | Do not use the dryer; call for service |
| E4 | The moisture sensor failed; the 405.6918# and 405.7918# guide says humidity sensor | Yes, on Timed Cycles | The cycle finishes but may over-dry; call for service |
| E5 | The temperature sensor failed | No | Do not use the dryer; call for service |
| Code or light | Kenmore's meaning | What Kenmore says to do |
|---|---|---|
| E00, E04, E05 or E06 | Not stated in the guide | Call for service |
| E03 | Not stated in the guide’s text | Empty the water tank; call for service if it continues |
| E08 | Possible voltage fluctuation in the supply | Wait until the voltage is back in range |
| Water tank light | The tank is full, or the drain hose is bent | Empty the tank or straighten the hose |
| Condenser light | The condenser is dirty | Clean the condenser |
| Filter light | The lint filter or its seat is clogged | Clean the seat and wash the filter |
| Filter and condenser lights blinking, parts in place | Not stated | Call for service |
| Code or light | Kenmore's meaning | What Kenmore says to do |
|---|---|---|
| CHECK VENT, blinking | The duct blockage sensing system found a serious restriction in the home’s exhaust | Shorten or straighten the duct and clean it now; the dryer still runs, but slower |
| TE1 or TE2 | Temperature sensing failure | Turn the dryer off and call for service |
| Code or light | Kenmore's meaning | What Kenmore says to do |
|---|---|---|
| CHECK VENT, blinking | A restriction in the external venting, not a dryer failure | Shorten or straighten the duct and clean it immediately |
| d80, d90 or d95 | Ductwork about 80 to 95 percent blocked | Do not use the dryer until the exhaust is cleared; Kenmore warns of fire |
| tE1 to tE7 | Temperature sensor failure | Turn the dryer off and call for service |
| HS | Humidity sensor failure | Turn the dryer off and call for service |
| PS | Electric only: the cord’s neutral is not on the center terminal | Check the cord at the terminal block |
| PF | Power: cord, house supply, breaker or outage | Check the supply; reset the breaker or replace the fuse |
| nP or gAS | The cord is connected wrongly, or the gas supply is off | Check the cord; open the house and dryer gas shutoffs |
| CL | Control Lock is on | Hold CHIME for 3 seconds |
| No steam, no code | Water level error | Unplug the dryer and call for service |
| Code | Kenmore's meaning | What Kenmore says to do |
|---|---|---|
| PF | A power failure interrupted the cycle | Press and hold START to restart |
| E1, E2 or E3 | Service codes | Call for service |
Kenmore says a blinking CHECK VENT light “does not indicate any problems with your dryer”. A Kenmore Elite dryer not drying with that light on has a restricted house duct. The warning is not a warranty item. Kenmore’s advice is a duct cleaning service, which is our dryer vent cleaning work.
On the 796.8196* steam models, the light can stay on for several cycles after the duct is cleared. Past five cycles, call for service.
Those models also run a 2-minute heated duct check. With the dryer cool and empty, press POWER, hold Temp and Chime until the test symbol shows, then press START. CHECK VENT blinking at the end means the exhaust is severely restricted.
Maximum duct length depends on the plate. Current 405 guides call for 4-inch rigid aluminum or galvanized steel, never plastic, and a hood with a swing-out damper and no screen. Kenmore asks for the exhaust to be cleaned at least once a year.
| Plate family | Rigid with no elbows | Rigid with elbows | Flexible metal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current 405 dryers | 90 ft with the recommended hood | 60, 45 and 35 ft with 1, 2 or 3 elbows | No more than 7.8 ft |
| Kenmore Elite 796.8051# and 796.8196* families | 65 ft with the recommended hood | 55, 47, 36 and 28 ft with 1 to 4 elbows | No more than 8 ft |
| Kenmore Elite HE4 110.8586# | 64 ft, or 58 ft with an angled hood | 27 ft with four elbows, or 21 ft with an angled hood | 36 ft, or 28 ft with an angled hood |
Each current 405 code names its part. C9 is the control board, E4 the moisture or humidity sensor, E5 the temperature sensor. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts. We fit OEM parts when the supplier has the right one.
Parts come after the first checks. Kenmore Elite guides warn that a circuit problem can let an electric dryer run without heat. So before any Kenmore dryer heating element replacement or a new Kenmore dryer thermal fuse, we test the supply ourselves.
We order a heating element for Kenmore dryers by the full plate number, not the retail number. On a Kenmore dryer model 110, heating element replacement needs every digit, because the 110 prefix covers more than one family.
The Kenmore Elite families above each have their own guide. A Kenmore Elite dryer heating element or a Kenmore Elite dryer belt replacement therefore starts from the plate. The plate also decides the part for a sensor, a control board or a Kenmore dryer motor replacement.
Kenmore’s warranty page gives dryers one year from the original sale. That means repair, or replacement if the dryer cannot be repaired. Outside private household use, it drops to 90 days. A covered defect in that year goes to Kenmore’s warranty service, through the store that sold it, with proof of sale.
The warranty excludes cleaning or instruction visits, installation not to code, misuse, and a missing or altered plate. It also lists filters, belts and bulbs as expendables. So a Kenmore dryer belt replacement is normally paid work, even in the first year.
Venting falls outside it too. Current guides make correct exhaust installation the owner’s responsibility, and the 796.8051# guide excludes failures caused by improper venting.
Outside that year, or for anything the warranty leaves out, the repair is ours.
Do the first checks above yourself: supply, setting, lint, airflow, load and Control Lock. Then compare your plate with the recalls below.
Past those checks, the job is ours. If your Kenmore dryer won’t start with the door latched, the power on and Control Lock off, we find the fault. C9 and E5 mean stop using the dryer, and E4 needs a new sensor even while timed cycles still work.
Kenmore Elite TE, tE and HS codes are ours as well. So is a tripped thermal limiter on a 417. Any grinding or rubbing is ours too, and so is a Kenmore dryer not spinning with the power on.
I usually ask for the plate number before anything else, because on a Kenmore it decides the guide, the codes and the parts. Our Kenmore dryer repair service covers current 405 and 263 models and older Kenmore and Kenmore Elite models, gas or electric. Our technicians are insured. Every paid repair carries our 100-day labor warranty on the work on your invoice.
Have the plate number and any code ready, then book your repair online.
We found two CPSC recalls on Kenmore dryers, both on older gas models. Check the model and the serial: recall 12251 names serial ranges, so not every unit is affected. Laundry centers such as 97912 and 97962 also appear on washer-side recall 09292, listed on our Kenmore washer page.
The 12251 label is on the front, above the opened door. The 02192 laundry center’s is behind the dryer door, at the top of the opening.
We do not repair a recalled unit, because the remedy runs through the recall. Confirm the remedy is still offered before any other work is done.
Models 796.90512900, 796.90518900, 796.91022900, 796.91028900, 796.91029900, 796.92192900, 796.92198900 and 796.92199900, sold November 2009 to August 2010. The gas valve can stay open after the cycle and keep heating, a burn and fire hazard. Turn off the gas and stop using it until repaired. The record’s remedy is a free gas-valve replacement through Kenmore’s recall line.
Models 110.98752792 and 110.98752793 with serials beginning MM, ML or MK, sold January 2000 to May 2002. The gas dryer section can overheat, a fire hazard. Stop using it and unplug it, but do not try to shut off the gas supply.
Why is my Kenmore dryer not getting hot?
A Kenmore dryer no-heat problem starts with the house, not the parts. An electric model runs on two fuses or breakers; with one out, the drum can turn with no heat. Before you buy a heating element for a Kenmore dryer, have the circuit tested. On a gas model, Kenmore’s guides also check that the gas supply is on.
Why won't my Kenmore dryer start?
A Kenmore dryer will not start until the door is fully latched. Opened mid-cycle, it needs Start pressed again. A Kenmore dryer not turning on at all points to the cord, the breaker or the fuse.
How do I reset a Kenmore dryer?
How to reset a Kenmore dryer depends on what stopped it. Read the display before you look for a Kenmore dryer reset button: PF points to power. If a Kenmore dryer stopped working with PF showing, hold START on the HE4 110.8586#, or check the supply and breaker on the 796.8196*.
Wondering how to reset Kenmore dryer controls that ignore every button? Release Control Lock as the first checks above describe. On the 405.8227# front-loads, the lock survives a power cut, so unplugging will not clear it. A tripped thermal limiter on a 417.8112* is replaced, not reset.
What are the first checks on a Kenmore dryer model 110 not heating?
Read the full plate, since the 110 prefix covers more than one family. On the Kenmore Elite HE4 110.8586#, a Kenmore dryer doesn’t heat when one of its two household fuses or breakers is out.
That guide also wants the room above 45 F. Run the dryer 5 to 10 minutes and feel for airflow under the outside hood. A plate reading 110.98752792 or 110.98752793 is a laundry center: check its serial against recall 02192 first.
Is a Kenmore dryer making loud noise when spinning safe to use?
Some sounds are normal by Kenmore’s current guides: the gas valve or element cycling, and the hum of moving air. The 417.8112* and 110.8586# guides add a thump at start after a long idle. It comes from the drum rollers and fades.
A Kenmore dryer squeaking, grinding or rubbing is different. On the 417.8112*, Kenmore says not to keep using it.
Does the compact Kenmore 26-81202 need a vent?
No. It is a ventless condensing dryer, so there is no duct to clean. The water goes to a tank you empty after every load, or out through an optional drain hose.
Clean the lint filter every load and the condenser monthly or every 30 cycles. Kenmore also asks you to wipe the humidity sensor strips with vinegar four times a year.
