LG Freezer Repair in Denver Metro Homes

Two different machines bring people to this page. One is LG’s standalone upright freezer, a compact unit with a knob and no display. The other is the freezer side of an LG refrigerator, which does report codes.

The LG Freezer Sold Here Is an Upright, Not a Chest Freezer

LG’s standalone freezer is the LROFC0605V. LG’s own product name for it is the 5.8 cubic foot Single Door Freezer, and the spec table says 5.8 as well. LG’s page title for the same model says 6.0, so LG’s own page carries both numbers. It is a 51 inch upright with six shelves, four full width door bins and a swing door.

The spec table is where this machine stops being generic. LG lists Temperature Controls as Knob Dial and Temperature Sensors as one thermostat. Cooling type is Direct Cooling, not No Frost. Shelf construction is listed as U Bending Evaporator, so the cooling circuit runs through the shelves themselves.

That last line changes what a technician will tell you not to do. Ice on a shelf has to be melted, never chipped off with a knife or a screwdriver. A puncture there is a sealed system repair, not a shelf repair.

LG also builds a second standalone freezer, the LROFC1104V, an 11.4 cubic foot counter depth upright freezer column. That one is No Frost, with Multi Air Flow, digital controls and Smart Diagnosis. The two share a badge and almost nothing else. Neither is a chest freezer, and LG does not sell one in its US line.

LG Puts This Freezer Between 55 and 110 Degrees

LG’s manual gives this freezer an install range. LG says to put the appliance where the temperature stays between 55 degrees F and 110 degrees F. If the temperature around it is too low or too high, LG says cooling ability may be adversely affected.

A Denver garage in January sits below that range for weeks at a time. That is LG’s own figure, not our opinion about garages. So a freezer complaint from a garage or an unheated basement starts with where the machine sits, before any part is suspected.

LG’s troubleshooting section adds two figures worth knowing. At a normal room temperature of 70 degrees F, LG expects the compressor to run about 40 to 80 percent of the time. LG also states the appliance should not be operated above 110 degrees F.

A Knob Marked 0, MIN, MID and MAX, and a Monthly Hand Defrost

This freezer has no degree scale on it. The knob is marked 0, MIN, MID and MAX. LG defines 0 as not operating, MIN as the warmest frozen setting and MAX as the coldest. MID is the setting LG names as best for keeping food.

LG’s manual tells the owner to defrost this freezer by hand. LG’s instruction is to defrost it regularly, and once a month to unplug the cord and let the whole cabinet defrost. Frost coming back every few weeks on this model is what LG told the owner to expect. On a Direct Cooling freezer it is not evidence of a failed defrost heater.

Two timings from LG’s manual stop a healthy machine being condemned. After a defrost cycle, LG says to wait 30 minutes and confirm the proper temperature has been restored. From a cold start, LG says the compressor begins running 7 to 10 minutes after the cord goes in. LG then allows up to 24 hours for the compartment to reach the temperature you set.

The manual does carry a troubleshooting appendix, under Before Calling for Service, Cooling, Parts and Features, and Noises. What it does not carry is a single error code. With one thermostat, a knob and no display, there is nothing for a code to appear on.

This model also has no Smart Diagnosis. On an LG refrigerator that carries Smart Diagnosis, the machine can send its own fault down the phone line. On this one, what we have to work with is your description and the knob position.

Uneven Frost on One Side, in LG’s Own Words

LG publishes a support page on frost buildup in the freezer only. Two lines on it are worth more than any general advice about frost. LG says that when the door is not sealed properly, cold air escapes the seal and causes frosting.

The second line is the useful one. LG says frost built up on one side of the freezer more than the other means the drawer is not sealing properly. That is a check you can make yourself before anyone comes out.

LG’s fix for a dirty or compressed gasket is warm water or a mild detergent, and pulling out the compressed part. LG also warns that frost on the return air vents restricts cold air and cuts cooling across the whole unit. After moving food away from the vents, LG asks for 4 to 6 hours before you judge the result.

One more LG figure sets the baseline. LG says most models default to 0 degrees for the freezer and 37 degrees for the refrigerator.

E FF and F dH: What an LG Refrigerator Reports on the Freezer Side

The standalone freezer shows no codes at all. An LG refrigerator with a digital display does, and four of them point at the freezer side.

LG’s own reset instruction is to unplug the product or trip the breaker for that circuit, then use it again after about five minutes. LG adds that if the same symptom and the same code come back, the unit needs a technician.

Where ice has locked the fan motor, LG’s own pages do not agree on how long to wait. The E FF page says to wait one day during summer and three days during winter. LG’s newer analog display page says at least 8 hours with the doors open, then 24 to 48 hours to return to temperature. We give you both, because LG published both.

On an Analog LG Display the Fault Is a Pattern of Lit Temperature Lights

Not every LG refrigerator has a digital readout. On the analog display models, LG signals most faults by which temperature setting lights come on together, not by a code. The exception LG names is the condenser fan motor, which does show as C or E CF.

We do not publish LG’s light patterns here as a self test, and there is a reason. LG’s own page prints the same pattern for two different sensor faults, so it cannot separate them. What the table is for is the phone call: tell us which lights are on and we start ahead.

When to Call Wilson & Myers

Four things are worth checking before you book anything. Look at the door seal, and at whether frost sits heavier on one side than the other. Check that nothing is packed against the return air vents. On a knob model, check the knob has not been left at 0 or MIN.

The fifth is the location. If the freezer lives in a garage or an unheated basement, LG’s 55 degree floor is the first thing to rule out.

Past that, the work is ours. Sealed system faults are ours, and LG defines that circuit as the condenser, dryer, connecting tube and evaporator. Does LG make a chest freezer?

Not in the US line. The standalone freezers LG sells here are both uprights, one compact and one a built in column. We service both, and we service the freezer side of LG refrigerators.

How often should I defrost my LG freezer?

On the standalone Direct Cooling model, LG’s manual says once a month. LG asks the owner to unplug the cord and let the whole cabinet defrost. An LG refrigerator with No Frost defrosts itself and needs none of this.

My LG refrigerator display shows O F F. Is the freezer broken?

LG says that is Demo Mode, which disables cooling in both sections while a unit sits on a store floor. LG splits the exit by serial number, and units whose first three digits are 901 or higher use the newer method. Either way, hold the buttons until a second beep, not the first.

What does E FF mean on an LG refrigerator?

LG says the freezer fan motor is not operating normally, and that ice around the motor is a common cause. It is a refrigerator code, so it never appears on the standalone freezer. Our LG refrigerator not cooling guide covers the symptom side.

Is my LG freezer still under warranty?

LG’s US terms on both freezers are one year parts and labor, and five years on the sealed system. The inverter compressor is parts only in years 6 through 10, and the owner is charged for the labor. Check the coverage with LG before you book a paid visit.
