LG sorts its own dishwashers into exactly two families, top control and front control, and that split decides where a fault becomes visible. LDF or LDN: What an LG Dishwasher Badge Tells Us

The model number sits on the sticker inside the door, and on an LG it does more than identify a serial. Across LG’s current US listing, the third letter separates the two families the brand itself sells.

That letter is our reading of LG’s own listing rather than a decoder LG publishes. It has held for every current US model we checked, and it matters because of where the panel sits.

On a top control LG the buttons and display sit on the top edge of the door. With the door shut there is nothing to read.

Two LG light systems get confused, and only one reports a fault. SignaLight is a row of three indicator LEDs on the front cover, and red there means error. The floor light on models such as LDNTH862S and LDNPH753S is a different feature. It is white, it projects in front of the door, and it only reports that the cycle finished.

AE, IE, OE and the Rest of the LG Letter Codes

LG opens its own code guide by warning that error and notification codes can differ depending on the product model. The letters below are the family that runs across the dishwasher line.

LG prints bE, nE and tE with a lowercase first letter, and there is no 6E in any LG document we read. CL is not a fault at all, and neither are several other things an LG panel shows.

F31 and F35 Belong to LG’s Dynamic Heat Dry Models

LG prints one sentence above two of its F codes: this error code is applicable to models featuring Dynamic Heat Dry. That fence is why these get their own table instead of joining the letters above.

LG lists a third F code, F37, for the Auto Open Door feature not functioning. It does not attach the Dynamic Heat Dry sentence to that one, so we do not either.

The 2024 owner’s manual for the LDTH555 and LDPH555 family spells the second code F3s rather than F35. A panel showing F3s and a page showing F35 are describing the same fault.

In LG’s current line-up, Dynamic Heat Dry sits on the top control models. Front control models carry Dynamic Dry instead, a 2-stage fan system, so we do not expect these codes on an LDF badge.

Those machines also have a part nothing else in the line has. LG asks owners to clear food residue from the gap below the Heat Dry blower cover every four months.

The LG That Keeps Draining, Chimes, or Turns Itself Back On

Some of the most alarming LG dishwasher behavior is the machine protecting itself. LG documents all of it, and knowing which is which either saves a call or makes one urgent.

On an FE or AE leak error the dishwasher keeps draining, deliberately, to protect the appliance and the floor. The printed manual adds the rest of that behavior. There is a ten second alert sound, the drain pump runs intermittently, and the machine powers itself back on until the AE clears.

Standing water below the filter is meant to be there, and LG says so plainly: it traps sewer smells. Water pooling above the filter line is the one LG tells owners to request service for.

A chime that will not stop after you open the door mid cycle is also normal. LG’s manual explains it as the machine telling you the interior is hot. The same machine turns itself off after four minutes of inactivity if a cycle is paused.

Behind an AE, LG names the float switch as the part that has tripped. The service path runs through the base pan behind the kick plate. Where the base is not reachable from the front, LG advises leaving that plate off for 24 to 48 hours. We have seen that dry out to nothing, and we have seen it hide a failed pump.

When to Call Wilson & Myers

Three things are worth checking before you book, because none of them is a fault.

Past that, an LG dishwasher fault is ours. OE that survives a clean filter, AE with a tripped float switch, HE, LE, tE and nE all mean a component test. F31 and F35 on a Dynamic Heat Dry machine are the same.

Four Spray Arms, the 25 Line, and Denver Metro Hard Water

LG builds its cleaning around water pressure and spray coverage, which is what hard water attacks. Two of LG’s own settings answer it.

QuadWash gives an LG four spray arms instead of two, and LG says so in its own copy for LDFN4542D. QuadWash Pro adds high-pressure jets on top of that.

The arm count is not cosmetic. LG’s own drain troubleshooting asks the owner whether the machine has two arms or four, and the filter steps differ from that answer.

Some LG models have no three stage filter at all. They use a self-cleaning filter that grinds food before it drains, and LG states that cleaning the filter is not necessary on those. Generic dishwasher advice gets this wrong on a whole part of the LG line.

LG does not publish one cleaning interval for the filter. The 2024 manual carries a schedule keyed to loads per week and whether you pre-rinse. Its intervals run from twice a week to once a year.

For hard water LG points at two settings. The rinse aid dispenser has five levels and leaves the factory at level 2. LG advises raising it where hard water leaves calcium on dishes.

The detergent dispenser has two marked lines. LG assigns the 15 Line to light loads or soft water, and the 25 Line to heavy loads or hard water. On the platform the 2024 manual covers, the rinse aid level is changed in Option Setting Mode.

One Year, Two Years, Ten Years on an LG Dishwasher

LG prints a warranty ladder in each owner’s manual, and it changed between dishwasher generations. That matters here because the ladder is also how we answer whether a machine is worth repairing.

Only the ten year Direct Drive motor term survived both. The control board went from five years to two, and the tub and door liner went from a limited lifetime term to two years.

A page telling you LG covers the control board for five years is describing an older machine. LG has also advertised a longer limited warranty on select appliances registered through its app.

Read the ladder in your own manual before assuming the term. A wash motor failure inside a ten year term is a different conversation from the same fault outside every term. Where the answer is replacement, dishwasher installation is a separate job we handle.

What does an LG dishwasher warranty actually cover?

LG’s recent manuals give one year on labor and on-site service. They give two years on the control board, racks, tub and door liner, and ten years on the Direct Drive motor. Older LG manuals gave longer terms on several of those, so the ladder in your own manual governs.

My LG shows CL. Is the dishwasher broken?

No. CL is Control Lock, and LG lists it among the displays that are not error codes. The panel is locked and the machine underneath is fine. Panels differ by generation, so we do not print a button combination here.

Do you need the model number before an LG dishwasher visit?

We can work without it, but the badge routes the call. An LDF model puts the display on the front, and LDN, LDT or LDP puts it on the door’s top edge. The letter also tells us whether Dynamic Heat Dry codes are possible on your machine at all.

What will an LG dishwasher repair cost?

The code narrows the part before anyone opens the machine. A technician confirms the fault on site and tells you what the repair involves before work starts. The part and the model decide the rest, so no figure on a web page would be honest.
