LG Refrigerator Ice Maker Repair: Craft Ice, Cubed, or Both

LG builds the ice maker into the refrigerator, and on a Craft Ice model it builds two of them. They carry different rated outputs, different first-ice timings, and different ways of failing. So LG ice maker repair starts by naming which one stopped.

Four LG Ice Makers, Four Rated Outputs, One Manual

The LG French Door and Side by Side owner’s manuals print a separate rated output for each ice maker position. One refrigerator can carry more than one of them. That is the reason a general ice maker page cannot describe your LG accurately.

Note the unit change. LG rates the Mini Cubed ice maker in pounds and the other three in pieces. LG also qualifies the four figures differently, so the wording that covers one ice maker does not cover the next.

3 ICE, 6 ICE and Ice Plus

Press the Craft Ice button repeatedly and LG cycles through 3 ICE, 6 ICE and OFF. LG’s own guidance is plain: pick 6 ICE for more ice, and 3 ICE for clearer ice. Ice Plus raises both ice making and freezing for 24 hours, then shuts off by itself.

The Craft Ice Faults LG Calls Normal, and the Ones It Does Not

LG documents a set of Craft Ice problems as expected behaviour, in its own words. The first batches may not be round and clear. After installation or a water filter change, LG says the first few batches may be semicircular or hold air bubbles.

LG adds that the ice may look cloudy depending on water quality and operating conditions. After a short power outage, LG says the first batch takes longer and may not come out round. On the Mini Cubed ice maker, LG says it may produce linked cubes rather than separate pieces.

Every one of those is time limited, and that is the part worth holding on to. LG excuses the batches right after an install, a filter change or an outage. It does not excuse LG Craft Ice that is still not round long after the filter change. It does not excuse a bin that never fills.

That line is where the complaint becomes a service call. An LG refrigerator not making Craft Ice at all is a different problem from a first batch that came out flat. The suspects then are the Craft Ice module, the fill path, or the control that drives them.

LG Says 24 Hours for Door Ice and 48 for Craft Ice

LG prints two different first-ice windows in the same manual. The in-door ice maker takes about 12 to 24 hours after a new refrigerator is installed. The freezer ice maker, Craft Ice included, begins producing at roughly 48 hours.

So on a dual ice maker LG the door can be dropping cubes while the Craft Ice bin is still empty. LG documents that as normal, not as a fault. We have seen owners book a visit inside that window when nothing has actually failed.

LG gives the other end of the line too. Once a bin is emptied, LG says the next ice may take up to 90 minutes and a full refill about 24 hours. Where the unit still makes no ice 4 to 6 hours after a reset, LG’s own support article says it needs repair service.

A different fault sits behind ice that forms and then stays put. LG builds two kinds of shutoff and they are diagnosed differently. One is a mechanical arm LG labels Auto Shutoff, and it has to move freely. The other is an ice detecting sensor, and LG asks for a clear path between the two sensors.

Stacking matters here as well. LG states that ice piled unevenly can make the ice maker misread how full the bin is and stop producing. When an LG ice maker will not dump ice into the bin, that is the first branch we separate from a failed module.

LG also shows two ice maker test styles, and they are not tested the same way. One has a power switch and a test button under the tray. The other has neither, and its test button is a recessed hole reached with a thin piece of metal.

LG’s Water Numbers, and the Two LG Prints Against Each Other

LG gives a supply range of 20 to 120 psi for a refrigerator with no water filter. On filtered models LG is not consistent with itself. The troubleshooting section says 40 to 120 psi, while the installation chapter and the specification block both say 20 to 120 psi.

We do not resolve that on your behalf. We measure the pressure at the machine and work from what it actually reads.

Reverse osmosis carries its own LG figures. LG asks for at least 40 to 60 psi into an RO system, and offers a field test with a 7 oz cup. Under two to three seconds to fill is adequate, and more than four seconds points to a supply under 20 psi.

LG ties that straight to ice shape. Where pressure is under 20 psi, or an RO system feeds the refrigerator, LG says the shape of Craft Ice may vary. If your LG ice maker is not filling with water at all, the inlet valve and supply line are the first things we isolate.

The filter itself is on LG’s list. LG names the LT1000P cartridge family for these models and asks for a change about every six months. LG also lists three symptoms that call for an early change: the filter indicator lighting, dispenser output dropping, and smaller ice.

Two LG warnings belong on the supply side as well. LG says connecting a refrigerator to a hot water line can damage the ice maker. LG also says leaving power on to the ice maker before the water line is connected can damage it. Both are install faults we still find years later, which is why the refrigerator water line gets checked.

Sb, GF and IT: the Codes LG Prints, in Two Lists

LG publishes ice-related codes in two separate places, and they do not belong to the same list. The owner’s manuals for these French Door and Side by Side models carry an Error Codes section with a single entry. A separate LG customer support document names three more.

We keep them apart on purpose. LG does not state which models or control platform the second set belongs to. Merging the two lists would teach you the wrong codes for your machine.

Anything else circulating for LG refrigerators is either about cooling rather than ice, or we could not confirm it against an LG document. We do not print codes we cannot source.

One LG cause of no ice is not a code at all. Display Mode disables all cooling in both compartments, so a refrigerator can sit in a shop window. On an LG that will not cool and will not make ice, the answer there is a keystroke rather than a part.

LG also builds a diagnostic path that changes the phone call. Smart Diagnosis runs through the LG ThinQ app over Wi-Fi, or as an audible tone held up to a phone. Where an LG ThinQ refrigerator ice maker is not working, that readout narrows the visit before anyone opens a door.

LG’s LK Ice Maker Kits Fit Named Top Freezer Models

Some LG refrigerators shipped without an ice maker, and LG sells four add-on kits for them. Each kit page names the models it fits, so the choice is made by model number rather than by cubic feet. LG describes all four as top freezer kits.

That is why two kits can list the same refrigerator. LG says as much on its own accessory pages, so the overlap is not a puzzle you have to solve in your kitchen.

Is the ice maker covered by LG’s refrigerator warranty?

Ask LG rather than assume. The words ice maker do not appear anywhere in LG’s refrigerator warranty document. That document does exclude damage caused by inadequate or interrupted water supply. So the supply side matters to coverage as well as to the ice.
