Two Machines, One Water Supply
A refrigerator and a dishwasher look unrelated until something goes wrong. They share a cold water line, a drain path and a filter that gets forgotten. Faults cross between them more often than owners expect.
- The supply valve. A dishwasher showing no water and an ice maker that stopped often trace to the same shut-off under the sink.
- The drain path. A dishwasher that will not drain and a refrigerator leaking onto the floor are both drainage problems, in different places.
- The filter. A water filter installed wrong reduces flow, cuts ice production and can leak from the housing.

Reading the Badge
The dishwasher decodes cleanly from Maytag’s own nomenclature. M is Maytag and D is dishwasher. The third letter is the one that matters: B for built-in, C for portable.
Further along the string, a P means a plastic tub and an S means a fully stainless one. That single letter changes how the machine holds heat and how it sounds, and Maytag rates its dishwashers at 50 decibels.
Refrigerators are read by cabinet style rather than by a letter you can trust across the decades. French door with a bottom freezer, side-by-side, and top-freezer are three separate support categories at Maytag, and the service manuals follow the same division.

The Denver Facts That Apply, and One That Does Not
Two local considerations are real and sourced. A third is the obvious one, and it is wrong.
- A refrigerator in the garage. Maytag specifies indoor use between 55 and 110 degrees, and says plainly not to install below 55. A second fridge in an unheated Front Range garage sits under that minimum for months.
- Incoming water temperature. Maytag recommends water reaching the dishwasher at 120 degrees, and names 84 degrees as the point where cycles stretch and sanitizing falters. That is testable at your own sink with a thermometer.
- Not hard water. Maytag’s own hard-water threshold is above 15 grains. Denver Water classifies the supply as soft to moderately hard, so we are not going to blame your water for a dirty dishwasher.
That third point is worth saying out loud, because the opposite is easy to write and it sells softeners rather than fixing appliances. Mineral scale in a spray arm is a real cause. Denver’s water being unusually hard is not.

Usually not. If a garbage disposer was fitted, the knockout plug inside it has to be removed before the dishwasher drain line can pass water. Maytag treats newly installed machines that will not drain as its own category, which tells you how often this happens.
Why did my ice maker stop when nothing else changed?
Check the freezer setting first. Maytag wants 0 to 5 degrees for ice production, and the factory setting is 0. Anyone who warmed the freezer to save energy may have stopped ice without breaking anything.
Do I need to vacuum my condenser coils?
Maytag says there is typically no need in a normal home. It recommends cleaning every two to three months only where the environment is greasy or dusty, or where there is significant pet traffic. Some models cannot be cleaned by the owner at all.
