Some GE dryers from 2019 on show a 1 or 2 and may not start until Start sets 1 for electric or 2 for gas. That is a setting, not a fault. This page covers GE-badge home dryers, gas and electric, and the family on the tag decides the rest of the fix.
The model tag sits behind the door. On models starting GT or GF, GE’s naming key reads the third letter as the platform. D means vented at standard length, V long vent, T a condenser and X a flat back. The letter after the two-digit series is the fuel, E for electric and G for gas.
So the GE electric dryer GTD58EBSVWS is a vented top load. The GE gas dryer GTX33GASKWW is a flat-back top load on gas. The GE electric dryer GTX33EASKWW is its electric version.
A model starting with P is a GE Profile, and so is the UltraFast Combo. GE Profile machines are on our GE Profile page. This page is GE clothes dryer repair for homes, so app-pay commercial dryers have a page of their own. Other brands start at our general dryer repair page.
The dryer half of a Unitized Spacemaker laundry center takes the same heat and vent checks below. Its label, warranty and booking are on our GE washer page, as is the GFQ14 washer-dryer combo. Our GE laundry appliances page covers this dryer and the washer beside it.
When a GE electric dryer won’t start, GE’s first checks need no tools. Push the plug fully in and press Start all the way. A GE dryer will not start with its door open. Then check the house breakers or fuses.
A GE gas dryer won’t start without electricity either, and GE wants it on its own grounded 120-volt circuit.
If a GE dryer won’t start but has power, read the panel. GE’s owner’s manuals for these dryers print no fault-code table, and neither do the support articles GE links to them. Numbered GE dryer error codes found elsewhere come from none of those documents, so match your display to GE’s own messages in the table below.
With a dark panel and the GE dryer not turning on, press Power: GE calls the panel asleep. A blinking lock icon makes a GE dryer start button not working look like a fault. A GE front load dryer not starting may be a GFT14 waiting for its water tank to be emptied. Knob models have no display at all.
A GE dryer not working after all of that points to parts. Look at the GE dryer door switch. GE says a scorched or pushed-in one can stop the dryer.
Our dryer not starting guide maps the same fault on other brands.
| Message | Where it shows | What GE says it means | What GE says to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 or 2 | Some display models from 2019 on | The personality setting is not chosen, so it may not turn on or tumble | Press Start to toggle: 1 for electric, 2 for gas |
| Lock icon | GTD58 and the 28-inch front loads | The controls are locked | GTD58: hold Wrinkle Care and Less Time 3 seconds. Front loads: hold Light 3 seconds |
| Check Vent | GFD55, GFD65 and GFV55 | Reduced airflow from a possibly blocked or restricted vent | Clean the filter and vent, then dry a load on an automatic cycle |
| Empty Tank | GFT14 | The water tank is full; the dryer will not run | Empty the tank and press Start; not needed with a drain hose |
A GE dryer not heating while the drum still turns points first at the house panel. An electric GE dryer may use two fuses or breakers. With one of the two out, the drum can turn without heat, so reset both. Those are house fuses, not a GE dryer fuse.
GE adds a trap that is easy to miss. A breaker can be partially tripped without looking tripped, and the dryer may run on 120 volts but cannot heat without 208 or 240. Turn that breaker fully off, then back on.
The cycle must be a heated dry cycle, not fluff or cool down. On gas, both the shutoff at the dryer and the main shutoff must be fully open. A propane tank must not be empty.
If the gas is on and a GE gas dryer not heating still runs, GE says to contact service. GE gas dryer troubleshooting ends there.
Past the owner’s checks, this is where GE stops. Our dryer not heating guide explains how each part fails.
Why is my GE dryer not drying? GE names two ways to end an automatic cycle, and the model decides which. Auto Dry reads air temperature on the GTD38, GTD48, GTX22, GTX33, GTX38 and ETD48. Sensor Dry adds a moisture sensor to temperature sensors on the GTD45, GTD58, GFD55, GFD65, GFV55, GFD14 and GFT14.
On sensor models, the GE dryer moisture sensor location is the lower front of the dryer. Level the dryer so clothes tumble against it. On the GFD14 and GFT14, GE says a dirty sensor leaves loads damp, so wipe it with a moist cloth.
GE’s advice for a GE dryer not drying clothes starts with the load: one wash load at a time. If water can be wrung from clothes out of the washer, GE says the washer may need service. That belongs on our GE washer page.
On a brand new GE dryer not drying fully, check Eco Dry and the vent first. A GE Sensor Dry dryer not heating needs the breaker and gas checks instead.
On by default for Normal and Cottons on the GTD58 and 28-inch front loads. GE says items can come out slightly damp.
GE says an electric dryer on one takes as much as three times longer to dry.
These are 120-volt models, so long dry times on them are normal.
GE gives electric owners a test: disconnect the vent from the back and run a load or two. If the symptoms stop, GE says a venting problem is likely. Never run a gas dryer without its vent. GE warns carbon monoxide fumes could enter the room.
Weak airflow at the outside wall cap usually means an obstructed duct, and GE points owners to local duct cleaning services to clear it. GE’s listings claim a Vent Sensor, which lights Check Vent, on models such as the GE electric dryer GFD55ESSNWW. GE also says venting problems are not a manufacturing defect and are not covered by the warranty. Our dryer vent cleaning service does that work.
GE wants 4-inch rigid metal duct, never plastic. For its top loads, GE puts the wall cap at least 12 inches above the ground. Clean the duct at least once a year, GE says.
Vent limits depend on which GE you own. Every 90-degree elbow shortens the limit, and GE counts two 45-degree elbows as one. GE’s top-load instructions warn that a longer run slows drying, shortens the dryer’s life and builds lint, a fire hazard.
| Dryer family | No elbows | Three elbows |
|---|---|---|
| 27-inch top loads | 120 ft | 70 ft |
| GFD35, GFD55 and GFD65 front loads | 90 ft | 35 ft |
| GFV55 long-vent front load | 200 ft | 165 ft |
| GFD14 24-inch front load | 90 ft | 35 ft |
| Spacemaker compacts | 46 ft | 23 ft |
| GFT14 ventless condenser | No outdoor vent | No outdoor vent |
GE’s first check for a GE dryer not spinning is the load, since heavy wet towels or jeans can make the belt slip. Then turn the drum by hand. If it turns freely, the GE dryer belt may be broken or loose, and GE says that needs service.
A GE dryer drum not turning after both checks is service work. Our dryer not spinning guide walks through the belt, idler pulley, rollers and motor.
On knob-control top loads, GE says a timer dial that moves in jumps during an automatic cycle is normal. A GE dryer timer knob not working at all on Timed Dry is different, and GE says service may be required. A dry load with an unmoved knob, too.
A GE dryer knob not working on an electronic model may simply be locked. Its lock icon blinks once when the knob turns. On the GFD14 and GFT14, hold Temp and Level together for 3 seconds to unlock the controls.
If your GE dryer makes noise when tumbling, GE first sorts normal from not. A brief squeak at startup is normal. A thump, a hum, a repeating chirp, or a GE dryer squeaking when running hot are not. If a GE dryer making grinding noise survives the checks below, GE says to stop using it until checked.
Learning how to fix a General Electric dryer yourself starts with GE’s own owner checks: breakers, panel, airflow and drum, in that order. That is GE dryer troubleshooting without tools.
A GE dryer not starting after all of them is ours. So is a heat fault, a failed belt or door switch, worn drum slides and a GE dryer making noise when spinning. I usually ask for the model number first, because it tells me the platform before I arrive.
Our insured technicians provide GE dryer repair service across the Denver Metro Area, on gas and electric models. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts, and every repair carries our 100-day labor warranty. Inside the first year, or five on a GTX52, GE’s warranty service covers a defect; after that, the repair is ours.
For GE dryer repair near me, have these three details ready before you book.
Every current GE home dryer but the GTX52 carries GE’s one-year limited warranty on parts and labor for a defect, from the date of purchase. The warranty passes to later owners for home use in the USA. GE dryer warranty repair runs through GE’s warranty service.
The GTX52 is the exception. Its own manual and product listing give five years on parts and labor. The warranty PDF linked from its product page is GE’s generic one-year sheet, so go by the manual.
GE excludes several common dryer calls from that coverage.
GE’s gas dryer instructions base the input rating on sea level. No adjustment is needed at or below 2,000 feet. Above that, GE says input ratings “should be reduced at a rate of 4 percent for each 1000 ft. above sea level.”
The whole Denver Metro Area sits well above 2,000 feet. The rule covers gas input only and has no bearing on GE electric dryer repair. Gas connections are on our dryer hook-up page.
GE wants the dryer above 50°F for its controls, and an unheated room can make it sweat and dry slowly.
GE’s warranty excludes damage from running the dryer in freezing temperatures.
GE says snow or ice should not build up around it.
GE’s manuals for these dryers describe no reset button. Knowing how to reset a GE dryer starts at the house panel: turn its breaker fully off, then back on.
A panel message can also pass for a fault. A GE dryer won’t turn on or tumble with a 1 or 2 showing until Start sets the fuel.
On a GE electric dryer not heating, reset both breakers, then switch the dryer’s breaker fully off and on. It may run on 120 volts yet never heat.
A GE dryer not heating up on a brand new gas install may still have its gas line off, GE notes. Beyond that, GE gas dryer repair is ours.
GE’s GTD58 manual names two causes of an early stop with wet clothes. A new load went in without a new cycle being selected, or the dryer is not level.
When the timer stops mid-cycle, GE points to the power supply and a blocked front. A GFT14 cancels a cycle paused over 15 minutes.
GE’s GTD58 manual says the interior and the exhaust duct should be cleaned once a year by qualified service personnel. That job is ours.
GE’s routine for owners is simpler. Clean the GE dryer lint trap before every load, and wash it in warm soapy water to clear softener residue.
GE names a shorted heater, the timer, loose wiring or another failed part. Unplug the dryer, then reset the breaker or replace the fuse.
If it trips again straight away, GE says the fault is typically in the house wiring or breaker box, which needs an electrician. Otherwise, a shorted heater or timer is ours to test.
Yes, our General Electric dryer repair service includes GE dryers that are no longer sold.
One older GE gas dryer has a shock-hazard recall: model DWXR463GGWW, sold from September 2006 to October 2007. Serial numbers start with AM, TL, SL, VL or ZL. Stop using one, unplug it and contact GE.
Tell us the model number from the label behind the door and whether it runs on gas or electric. That decides which checks come first.
