A Maytag dryer that tumbles without heating, takes three cycles to dry, or will not start at all is nearly always worth repairing. The parts are inexpensive and available.
There is something we would rather tell you up front. A great many no-heat and long-cycle calls come down to the vent, not the dryer. Replacing a blown fuse without clearing that vent just buys a few weeks. We check the duct before we sell you a part.
Wilson & Myers covers Maytag laundry across the Denver Metro Area with insured technicians and a 100-day labor warranty. Read the badge off the door frame before you call.
Maytag builds the same dryer in two forms, and Maytag’s own model prefix tells you which one is in your laundry room. MED is a Maytag electric dryer. MGD is a Maytag gas dryer.
Requires a 240-volt outlet on its own circuit. Heat comes from a metal element. The thermal fuse sits in the drive-motor circuit, so when it opens the drum stops too.
Requires a gas hookup and a standard 120-volt outlet. Heat comes from an igniter, a flame sensor and gas valve coils. The broken-belt switch sits in the drive-motor circuit here instead.
That last pair of lines is the reason this page splits by fuel rather than by symptom. Maytag’s troubleshooting guide annotates one complaint, a drum that will not spin, with two different causes. Drive belt and belt switch on gas only. Thermal fuse on electric only.
Same complaint at the door. Different first component to test. Maytag gas dryer repair and Maytag electric dryer repair are two different jobs, even on machines whose model numbers differ by one letter.
Form factor is a separate question. Maytag sells a Maytag top load electric dryer and a Maytag front load dryer in the same lineup. A Maytag Pet Pro dryer comes in electric or gas. A Maytag front load dryer not heating is still diagnosed by fuel first.
Most models are sold as a matched pair across both fuels. The Maytag 7.4 cu. ft. electric dryer MED6230HW has a gas twin, and so do the Maytag top load gas dryer MGD5030MW and the Maytag electric dryer MED7230HW. A Maytag top load electric dryer MED4005SW sits at the simpler end of the same range.
A Maytag steam dryer adds a water valve and a steam cycle on some models, which gives it one more supply connection to check. A Maytag stackable dryer is the same machine in a column. The Maytag commercial electric dryer MEDP586KW is the commercial-grade residential build at 7.4 cubic feet.
Owners call us by the badge, not by the model number, and Maytag’s Owners Center confirms the names. MEDB850YW is a Bravos XL steam dryer. The Maytag Centennial electric dryer MEDC200XW is another. A Maytag Maxima dryer is MED6000XW, and a Maytag Epic z dryer is MEDZ600TW.
So a Maytag Bravos XL dryer not heating and a Maytag Centennial dryer not heating are worked exactly as this page describes. There is no series-specific fault list. The fuel platform and the control board decide the path.
A Maytag Bravos XL dryer squealing is the same drum roller, idler pulley and belt question as any other Maytag. A Maytag Bravos XL gas dryer adds the burner to that list and nothing else. The series name tells us the cabinet and the vintage, which helps with parts.
Model numbers stay more useful than badges. A Maytag dryer MEDC465HW0 tells us the fuel, the platform and the revision in one string, and that is what we ask for.
A Maytag Commercial Technology dryer is a residential machine built with commercial-grade components. It is not the coin-operated line. A Maytag commercial dryer built for the home is ours, while a Maytag coin operated dryer is laundromat equipment on a different platform.
One more platform exists and it changes the diagnosis completely. Maytag documents HybridCare as a ventless heat pump dryer that uses a refrigeration circuit and recycles the same air. It is not on the current lineup pages, so we will not say whether it is still sold.
If you own one, say so when you book. A Maytag ventless dryer has no exhaust duct to blame. Its heating phase runs longer by design, and the laundry comes out cooler than people expect. A Maytag heat pump dryer that seems slow may be behaving exactly as documented.
Other names circulate that we cannot tie to a Maytag source, including Neptune, Atlantis and the numbered series. We will still work on the machine. We just will not print a series name we cannot verify.
Every ordering below is Maytag’s own, taken from the troubleshooting guide and the component tests. It is not our impression of what usually fails.
The manual checks the installation first, then the supply, then the heat system, then the control board. After that the platforms diverge completely.
On a Maytag electric dryer not heating, the classic cause is not a dryer fault at all. Electric dryers run on two household fuses or breakers. Lose one leg of the 240-volt supply and the drum turns normally while the machine blows cold air.
On a Maytag gas dryer not heating, the first check is the shutoff valve on the supply line. After that the burner: the igniter, then the flame sensor, then the gas valve coils. A gas dryer with the valve closed tumbles perfectly and dries nothing.
Only then the thermal chain. That is the Maytag dryer thermal fuse, the thermal cut-off, the Maytag dryer high limit thermostat and the Maytag dryer cycling thermostat. On electric machines add the Maytag dryer heating element itself. Our guide to a dryer that will not heat walks the generic version.
Parts on a no-heat call are platform-specific. For electric: a heating element for Maytag dryer cabinets, a Maytag dryer thermostat, and a Maytag dryer fuse. For gas: a Maytag dryer igniter and a Maytag dryer flame sensor. A Maytag heating element for dryer work of this kind is sourced through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts.
Maytag dryer heating element replacement and Maytag dryer thermal fuse replacement are both short jobs once the cabinet is open. A thermal fuse for Maytag dryer models costs little. The airflow problem that opened it is the part of the visit that matters. A Maytag Centennial dryer thermal fuse fails for the same reason as any other.
This is the most useful sentence in the whole manual. When the thermal cut-off has blown, Maytag says to replace both it and the high limit thermostat. It also says to check for a blocked exhaust and a failed heat element.
Read that as written. A blown Maytag dryer thermal fuse or cut-off is a symptom of restricted airflow, not the disease. Replacing it without clearing the vent buys a few weeks and the machine comes back.
That is why a Maytag dryer overheating complaint and a Maytag dryer vent cleaning job are the same conversation. Vent work sits on our dryer vent cleaning page.
For a drum that will not turn, start with the drive belt and belt switch on gas, or the thermal fuse on electric. Then the Maytag dryer door switch, then the Maytag dryer motor, then the control board.
When a Maytag dryer won’t start at all, or a Maytag dryer won’t turn on, add the door itself. A door not fully closed, or not striking the latch, stops everything before any electronics are involved. Maytag dryer door latch faults are common and cheap.
After that come the Maytag dryer start switch, the Maytag dryer control board, and on older machines the Maytag dryer timer. Maytag dryer timer replacement is a legacy job that still turns up on well-kept machines.
Why is my Maytag dryer not starting but has power is therefore a door-circuit question first. Our guide to a dryer that will not start and our guide to a dryer that will not spin cover the generic versions in depth.
Early shut-off comes from the dryness setting, a full Maytag dryer lint screen, a clogged vent, or the Maytag dryer moisture sensor. Maytag adds one cause nobody guesses: the load may not be touching the sensor strips, and the fix is levelling the machine.
Running too long is the mirror image. Poor airflow, a stuck Start button, the moisture sensor, or a thermistor. A blocked Maytag dryer blower wheel belongs on that list too.
Some noise is normal and Maytag says so. A thumping in the first minutes after a period of disuse is expected. On a gas machine the gas valve clicking is a normal operating sound.
A Maytag dryer squeaking when running, or a Maytag dryer squealing when running, is mechanical. Maytag dryer rollers, a worn Maytag dryer drum roller shaft, the Maytag dryer idler pulley, or the Maytag dryer belt. Maytag dryer belt replacement is routine work and Maytag dryer making noise when spinning usually ends there.
The other candidates are duller. A coin or a button caught between the drum and a panel, legs not fitted, a machine out of level, or a balled-up load.
The second photograph shows a heating element with a visible break in the coil. That is the end of an electric no-heat call, and often the end of a long airflow problem that nobody addressed.
Clear the lint screen and look down the vent first. Most no-heat and long-cycle calls end right there, and neither check needs a tool.
Call us when the drum will not turn, when a gas machine tumbles cold, or when the display shows a code beginning with F. On an electric dryer, running without heat often means one leg of the supply is gone.
Book online and read us the badge. MED or MGD decides which parts belong on the van before we set out.
Codes read in two halves. The F number names the suspect system and the E number names the suspect component. The dryer stores up to five, and a technician reads them before touching anything.
Maytag uses two control platforms, and three code strings mean different things on each. Merging the lists teaches the wrong answer to somebody standing in front of the machine.
| Code | On the ACU platform | On the CCU platform |
|---|---|---|
| F1E1 | Motor or heater failure, or a connector problem | Cycle control unit problem |
| F3E2 | Moisture sensor 1 open or shorted | Exhaust thermistor shorted |
| F3E5 | Moisture sensor 2 open or shorted, Quad Sense models | Inlet and exhaust thermistor open |
| Code | Description | What it points at |
|---|---|---|
| F1E1 | Motor or heater failure, or connector problem | No voltage at the heater relay. Check the wires into the element and the relay, then the motor circuit. |
| F3E1 | Exhaust thermistor open or shorted | Open below 18 F, shorted above 250 F. Can also mean the J14 connector is unplugged. |
| F3E2 | Moisture sensor 1 open or shorted | Appears only in service diagnostic mode. |
| F3E3 | Inlet thermistor open or shorted | Open below 18 F, shorted above 391 F. Can also mean J14 unplugged. |
| F3E5 | Moisture sensor 2 open or shorted | Quad Sense models. Diagnostic mode only. |
| F6E1, F6E2 | Control to interface communication error | Harness continuity, then supplies, then the interface, then the control. |
| FCE1 | WiFi module communication lost | The connectivity module at the interface board. |
| Code | Description | What it points at |
|---|---|---|
| F1E1 | Cycle control unit problem | Verify the connections to and from the board, then run its power check. |
| F2E1 | Stuck button | A button held over twenty seconds, or an interface mismatch. Diagnostic mode only. |
| F2E2 | Interface software error | The panel cannot read its own memory. Check connections, then replace the panel. |
| F3E1 | Exhaust thermistor open | Below 18 F, over 50k ohms. |
| F3E2 | Exhaust thermistor shorted | Above 250 F, under 500 ohms. |
| F3E3 | Inlet thermistor open | Below 18 F, over 245k ohms. |
| F3E4 | Inlet thermistor shorted | Above 391 F, under 20 ohms. |
| F3E5 | Inlet and exhaust thermistor open | Occurs when the P14 connector is unplugged from the board. |
| F3E6, F3E7 | Moisture sensor open or shorted | Diagnostic mode only. |
| F4E1 | Heater relay or connector problem | Heater wiring and relay connections. |
| F4E3 | Restricted air flow | Lint screen and exhaust duct. Same fault as the AF display code. |
| F4E4 | L2 line voltage error | L2 below 50 volts. Power cord, fuse and relay connections. |
| F6E1, F6E2 | Communication error between the boards | Harness continuity, then power supplies, then replacement. |
Three codes appear on the display that are not F-codes, and these are the ones an owner reads out over the phone.
The Maytag dryer AF code is the most useful string on this page, because it is the one code that is not a broken part. The Maytag dryer PF code is the second, for the same reason. The Maytag dryer L2 code points at the house, not the machine.
Maytag’s own owner guide lists the causes of long drying times, and most of them are outside the cabinet. These are checkable conditions rather than opinions.
The temperature line matters here more than in most markets. A Denver dryer in an unfinished basement or an attached garage can run cold all winter with nothing broken in it at all. Installation and venting sit on our dryer hookup page.
Before anything is opened, we check power at the outlet and the household fuse or breaker. A regular fuse where a time-delay fuse is required is a common find. Then the vent, in full.
Maytag puts venting in the pre-check, ahead of every component. That is the whole argument for treating the duct as the first suspect rather than the last. Maytag dryer troubleshooting that starts at the parts catalogue fails for that reason.
Then the codes. The manual’s own instruction is to always check for error codes first, and up to five stored faults are stepped through in service diagnostic mode. Only after that do the component tests begin.
Those tests are numbers, not judgement. The drive motor reads 2.7 to 3.0 ohms on the main winding. A gas igniter outside 50 to 500 ohms is replaced. Gas valve coils have their own three resistance figures. A thermal fuse is a continuity check and nothing else.
One live test separates a real diagnosis from a parts swap. On a gas machine we run a timed high-heat dry and watch the igniter through the peek window. If it glows red and no flame follows, the flame sensor is the part. If it never glows, there is no voltage at the burner and the motor centrifugal switch is suspect.
Every repair carries a 100-day labor warranty. We source Maytag dryer parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts. Coverage across every brand sits on our dryer repair page, and the washer half of the pair is on our Maytag washer repair page.
Maytag dryer service and Maytag dryer repair service across the metro run on one schedule. Maytag dryer repair Denver customers book through the same page. The rest of the lineup starts from our Maytag appliance repair page, and the laundry pair sits under Maytag laundry appliances.
The vent, by a wide margin. Restricted airflow shows up as long cycles, as a machine that shuts off early, as overheating, and eventually as a blown thermal cut-off. The part that failed is rarely the thing that caused the failure.
It depends entirely on the fuel. An electric machine that tumbles but blows cold has usually lost one leg of its 240-volt supply, so check both breakers or fuses. A gas machine with the same symptom needs the shutoff valve checked, then the igniter and flame sensor.
Usually, and more often than owners expect. A thermal fuse, a door switch, a belt, an igniter or a flame sensor is routine work on a machine worth keeping. We diagnose first and say plainly when a repair is not the better call.
It is decided by the platform and the part, not by a price list. A gas burner assembly and an electric heating element are different jobs. We diagnose, then quote, then you decide.
We publish no figure, because Maytag publishes none and every number circulating online is unsourced. Vent condition, room temperature and how often the lint screen is cleared do more to decide it than the badge does.
If the display shows PF, the cycle was interrupted by a power failure. Hold START to resume, or press POWER to clear it. There is no separate Maytag dryer reset button on these machines.
PF is a power failure during the cycle. AF is restricted airflow, which means the lint screen or the vent. Neither is a broken component, and AF is the one worth acting on quickly.
Overheating, most often, and a full lint screen is the usual reason behind it.
Work the door circuit first, then the belt switch on gas or the thermal fuse on electric. How to fix a Maytag dryer that is dead at the panel is a start-circuit question, not a heat question.
Rollers, idler pulley or belt, in that order. None of it gets better on its own, and a seized roller eventually takes the belt with it.
On the blower housing or the exhaust duct inside the cabinet, which is why Maytag dryer thermal fuse location is not a five-minute answer. The panel has to come off with the machine unplugged.
On service-call evidence, yes. Parts stay available and the machines are straightforward to work on. That is a technician’s view, not a product review.
Overheating, most often. The thermal chain cuts the machine to protect it, and the underlying cause is nearly always airflow. A moisture sensor reading a load that is not touching the sensor strips does it too.
On the door frame, visible with the door open. Read us the full string when you book. The MED or MGD prefix alone tells us whether to load gas parts or electric parts on the van.
Both sit behind the cabinet panels, in the heat and exhaust path, and reaching them means dismantling the machine with the power disconnected. We would rather do that than describe it, because the thermal fuse also carries the drive motor circuit on an electric dryer.
That is usually the control lock rather than a fault. It is cleared from the panel, and the owner guide for your model names the key combination. If the panel is dead instead, the fault is in the start circuit or the boards.
The lint screen is an every-load job you can do. The duct behind the machine and the run to the outside hood is not, and that is where the AF code comes from. We handle that as vent cleaning, not as a dryer repair.
The serial number on the model label carries the production date. Send us the full model and serial string and we will read it back, along with what is still available for that machine.
The same person, under a more accurate name. A Maytag dryer technician arrives insured, with the model prefix already read so the right parts are on the van. Maytag clothes dryer repair runs from the same team as every other brand.
Judged by what we see on service calls, the laundry line holds up well and parts stay available. That is a service opinion rather than a review, and the machines that last are the ones whose vents were kept clear.
The whole metro, from the city out through the surrounding suburbs. Coverage for the city itself sits on our appliance repair in Denver page. Searching Maytag dryer repair near me from anywhere in the metro reaches the same team.
Tell us whether the badge reads MED or MGD. Gas and electric are two different visits, and it decides what goes on the van.
