Whirlpool builds its ventilation on three separate hardware platforms, and they fail in different ways. A wall canopy, an under cabinet hood and a retractable downdraft share a badge and little else. This page covers all three, alongside the rest of our Whirlpool repair work. What the hood hangs over, ranges and cooktops alike, sits under Whirlpool cooking appliance repair.
An over the range microwave is not work we take, whatever it hangs above. Built in and luxury microwaves are a separate conversation. So the first job on this page is telling the two apart, because Whirlpool sells them side by side.
Whirlpool’s own site lists hoods, microwaves and low profile microwave hoods as three categories at the same level. The microwave hood is a sibling of both, not a kind of hood, and we do not service it.
Its paperwork agrees. Every hood model we checked is filed under a hood and vent category, never under microwave. Every WML and WMM model is filed the other way round, and those we turn down.
Whirlpool’s shorthand for those units is MHC, short for Microwave Hood Combination. Only the shop tiles blur the line, because the hoods landing page shows WML models beside real hoods.
Read the rating plate before anything else. On a Whirlpool wall mount range hood or an under cabinet model it sits inside, on the left wall behind the grease filter. On a retractable downdraft it is on the front, above the terminal box cover.
That one string settles three questions. It decides whether a dead light is a bulb or a technician visit, which of five warranty documents governs, and whether the hood recirculates.
Most of the line comes as a Whirlpool 30 inch range hood, with a 36 inch twin. Width alone will not tell you which platform you have.
One thing on that plate unsettles people. Look up a UXT or UXD number and Whirlpool’s owner site titles the page Unbranded. It is a filing habit in a catalog the corporation shares, and it changes nothing about the machine, the parts or the warranty.
| Platform | Lighting | What else is different |
|---|---|---|
| Retractable downdraft, UXD | None at all | A lift mechanism, filter interlocks, ducted only, and the one manual with a fault table. |
| UXT generation | An incandescent bulb the owner fits | Switching varies by model, and a charcoal filter that replaces the grease filter. |
| WVU, WVW and WVI | LED lamps behind a driver | Switching varies within the family, so read the plate, and a charcoal filter kit for recirculating. |
Across twelve documents and three platforms there is not one error code. Error code, fault code, diagnostic, F numbers and E numbers all return zero. So does the word display, which is the more useful zero. None of the verified models has a screen to put a code on.
There is no named control board either. Control board, circuit board, electronic control and PCB return zero across the same twelve documents. Speed selection is mechanical: the switch closes a different pair of contacts on a different motor winding.
Whirlpool’s instruction on a worn blower motor is blunt. Do not lubricate it, do not repair it, replace it. Its own bearing test is to wiggle the motor shaft, which should not move at all.
| What it does | What that points at |
|---|---|
| Runs on some speeds, not others | A switch contact or a motor winding tap, not a board. |
| Whirlpool range hood fan not working at all | The supply, the motor, or on a downdraft the filter interlock. |
| Whirlpool range hood making noise under load | Motor bearings. The shaft should not move when you wiggle it. |
| Whirlpool range hood light not working | Two answers, and the platform decides which one applies. |
Whirlpool lights these hoods with an incandescent bulb or with LED lamps, and its documents name nothing else. On a UXT the bulb is a hardware store part, and Whirlpool publishes the swap for the owner. It calls for a 75 watt maximum, 120 volt bulb, which does not come in the box.
On the WVU, WVW and WVI generation the answer is the opposite. Whirlpool’s own line reads that the LED lights are replaceable by a service technician only. They run from a constant current driver rather than a plain socket.
The retractable downdraft has no light at all. Neither of its documents mentions a lamp of any kind, because it sits down in the counter with no canopy to light from. A caller reporting a dead downdraft light owns a different machine.
Pull a filter out of one and the whole machine goes dead. A microswitch behind each filter has to be held closed before the vent will run. Somebody who has just cleaned the filters has usually not pushed one fully home.
Two more behaviors read as failure and are not. The blower will not start unless the plenum is fully raised, so a vent stopped halfway takes the fan with it. The start button has to be held for a full three seconds, so that wiping the cooktop does not raise the vent.
Behind those sit the parts that genuinely fail: a plenum drive motor, an up limit switch and a down limit switch.
| Whirlpool's heading | What it names as the cause |
|---|---|
| Nothing will operate | A blown fuse or breaker, filters not depressing their switches, or the button not held. |
| Vent does not retract | Filters out or not fully in, the button not held, or a unit not level and fastened. |
| Blower does not operate | The vent not fully raised, filters installed wrongly, or the slider left at off. |
Switch the vent off at once, then kill the power at the breaker.
Let it dry naturally, and do not open the vent to reach the water.
The plenum sits at counter level, where spills land.
A damper is a gravity flap that the fan pushes open and that drops shut when the fan stops. Put two in one duct and the upstream flap opens into the back of the downstream one. The hood then pulls badly at every speed, or clatters, with nothing wrong inside it. Whirlpool warns about it and gives a different remedy per generation.
The second fault that is not the hood sits beside a gas cooktop. A downdraft running near a flame sensing burner can pull the flame off the sensor. The cooktop decides the burner has gone out and sparks again, while it is plainly still lit. Whirlpool’s fix costs nothing: turn the blower down, or the flame up.
If the clicking carries on with the vent off, our cooktop repair page covers that machine. Where a duct or a cap is the fault, our range hood replacement page is the route.
Remove the damper flap from the vent damper supplied with the hood.
Do not use the damper supplied with the hood at all.
Whirlpool covers these hoods for one year, parts and labor. There is no five year tier and no parts only tier in the hood set, whatever a longer term on another Whirlpool appliance suggests.
What differs between the five documents is the exclusion list, and one exclusion arrived partway through. From the November 2014 revision onward, Whirlpool excludes damage caused by non genuine Whirlpool parts. The two older documents carry no such clause, so it is not true of every hood.
Model number decides this, not model family. UXT4230AYS sits on one document, and UXT4230ADS, one letter different, sits on another.
Two exclusions sit on all five and shape real calls. Service calls that correct an installation are out, which is where a damper conflict lands. Consumable parts are out by name, so filters and bulbs are never covered.
Our own labor warranty runs 100 days, separately from anything Whirlpool covers.
| Document | Revision | Scope and notable clause |
|---|---|---|
| W10342491 | June 2012 | The retractable downdraft. No non genuine parts clause. |
| W10400322 | January 2014 | The UXT AY generation, seven models. Adds rust and discoloration. |
| W10646400 and W10646401 | November 2014 | UXT2030ADW and UXT3030ADB. First to exclude non genuine parts. |
| W11262170 Rev A | May 2018 | 53 models across WVU, WVW, WVI, GXW, UXT, UXL and UXW. Same clause. |
An island downdraft vents down through the floor rather than up through a wall or a roof. Whirlpool’s own drawing shows the duct running under the slab, in some cases inside six inch PVC sewer pipe packed with gravel or sand.
Slab on grade island kitchens are common in Denver Metro new builds, and that changes the conversation. A duct under concrete is not going to be re routed. So a downdraft with an airflow problem stays a repair question.
The other local pattern is the remodel that outgrows its hood. Whirlpool recommends the WVU generation for cooktops totalling 55,000 BTU or less. A high output range under a hood chosen for a smaller one sits outside that recommendation.
Fixed at build time, so the repair works with it rather than around it.
Whirlpool puts the WVU at 55,000 BTU of cooktop or less.
Whether the weak pull is the hood, the duct or the cap.
Most Whirlpool hood calls sort into three piles. Some are a filter, a bulb, or a button held long enough. Some belong to the duct or the cap. The rest are ours.
I usually ask for the model number off the rating plate before anything else. It settles the light question and the warranty question at once, and it rules out the microwave hood, which is not work we take.
Our technicians are insured. We repair the Whirlpool under cabinet range hood and the Whirlpool island range hood, plus wall canopies, hood liners and the retractable downdraft. That work runs across the Denver Metro Area, as part of our appliance repair service.
We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts. Whirlpool range hood parts are identified against the model number before anything is ordered.
For another badge, see our Bosch hood page, our LG hood page or the range hood brands index. Our range hood repair page sorts the work by symptom, and restaurant kitchens go to commercial hood repair. To book, use our contact page, and our pricing page explains how a visit is charged.
A search for Whirlpool range hood repair near me reaches us across the Denver Metro Area. The model number tells us which of the three platforms is coming.
Start with power, because there is no code to read. A Whirlpool range hood that will not turn on at any speed points at the supply, the switch, or the motor.
On a retractable downdraft, check two more things. Every filter has to be seated on its microswitch, and the vent fully raised.
Whirlpool has you wash the metal grease filter in the dishwasher or a hot detergent solution. A screwed retainer holds it on the UXT, and a spring release handle holds it on the WVU and the downdraft.
A Whirlpool range hood charcoal filter is a different item. It is not washable, and it lasts up to six months.
Whirlpool’s own site gives two answers and they do not agree. Your owner’s manual says the charcoal filter is not washable and lasts up to six months. A support article says it can be washed, dried in an oven to reactivate it, then replaced after about three years.
That article describes a hood with a display and a fan button. None of the 41 models we verified has a display, so your manual governs.
A microswitch sits behind each filter, and the vent will not operate until both are properly installed. Push each filter fully home until it latches.
If it still does nothing, hold the button on top for a full three seconds. A short press does not complete the cycle.
On the UXT generation, yes. A Whirlpool range hood light bulb there is a 75 watt maximum, 120 volt incandescent that you supply.
On the WVU, WVW and WVI generation, no. Whirlpool’s own wording is that the LED lights are replaceable by a service technician only.
Some can. Whirlpool ships these hoods set for a vented installation, and says models that are capable of a recirculating install need charcoal filters.
The retractable downdraft does not convert at all. Neither of its documents mentions recirculating or a charcoal filter.
Tell us how the hood vents, outside or back into the room, when you book. That changes what the technician brings to the visit.
