Four letters at the front of the model number decide whether this is a machine we can work on. Whirlpool files induction underneath electric in its own merchandising, so an owner searching for electric cooktop repair may own one we do not service.
This page covers Whirlpool gas, radiant and coil cooktops across Denver Metro Area. Induction sits outside what we take, and the next section shows how to tell. Other Whirlpool machines are on our Whirlpool brand page. The oven underneath and the hood above are both under Whirlpool cooking appliance repair.
Whirlpool’s own electric comparison chart carries a column called Type of Element, and its values are Coil, Radiant and Induction. Read against the model numbers in the same chart, the prefix gives a clean test.
Do not shortcut this to knobs: they rule induction out, but tap touch does not rule it in. WCE97US0KS is radiant with tap touch controls, so the prefix is the reliable read.
Where the rating plate sits depends on fuel. A gas cooktop carries it on the underside of the base. A knob electric model has serial plates behind the control panel that rotate up. A tap touch model has it underneath, on the metal cabinet.
Widths follow the same chart. A Whirlpool 4 burner gas cooktop is 24 or 30 inches wide, and a Whirlpool 5 burner gas cooktop is 30 or 36. A Whirlpool 30 inch gas cooktop can be either, and every Whirlpool 36 inch gas cooktop carries five.
| Prefix | Element type | Do we service it |
|---|---|---|
| WCG and WCGK | Sealed gas burners | Yes |
| WCE and W5CE | Electric radiant under ceramic glass | Yes |
| WCC and RCS | Electric coil | Yes |
| WCI and WCIT | Induction | No, and the page says why |
A Whirlpool cooktop burner not working while its neighbors light is almost always a cap or a port. Burner caps are type-marked, on the underside of the cap and the top interior of the base. Whirlpool prints four markings: AUX, SR, R and UR. It never says what they abbreviate, and neither will we.
The caps are not interchangeable, and Whirlpool says the burners are similar in assembly. That is the whole explanation for a cooktop that lit on Sunday and will not light on Monday. The caps went back on the wrong bases.
Two more things have to be right. The hole in the base lines up with the electrode, and the cap must sit firmly rather than rest on top.
Blocked ports are the other half of it. Whirlpool says to clear them with a straight pin, and specifically not with a wooden toothpick. A wooden tip snaps off inside the port and turns a temporary blockage into a permanent one.
Every burner on a Whirlpool gas cooktop sparks when any knob is pushed in. That is the design, and only the burner being lit takes a flame. Whirlpool cooktop clicking while a knob sits at Ignite is normal. Clicking that carries on with every knob fully off is a fault and a service call.
Whirlpool’s two documents disagree slightly here. The Quick Start Guide says the sparking continues between Ignite and Hi, and the Owner’s Manual restricts it to Ignite. Both shipped with the same cooktops, so we print the disagreement rather than the tidier version.
Flame quality has a published test. On High the flame should be blue, clean and soft, with no yellow tip and no lifting. A low flame should stand about a quarter of an inch high and hold steady.
Two installation conditions cause a bad flame and neither is a broken part. Whirlpool warns against obstructing the airflow around the grate edges. It also warns against a strong draft from a window, door or vent. A supply register blowing across a Denver kitchen is that case.
If clicking is what brought you here, our article on a gas stove clicking but not lighting works through it across brands.
There is no display on a gas model, so there is nothing for a code to appear on. The current gas Owner’s Manual has no troubleshooting section at all, and the Control Guide carries none. Whirlpool’s support site returns a 404 for its gas cooktop error code page. Three checks, one answer.
What replaces a code table here is the ordered burner check above, which Whirlpool does publish.
Electric radiant has exactly one code. F2E1 means one or more keys read as permanently pressed, and it can only appear on a tap touch model. Every other radiant model has knobs and no display.
If the reset does not hold, the code is ours. Codes beginning F0 belong to Whirlpool’s induction cooktops, which sit outside what we take. A display showing one identifies the machine as induction.
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No display at all | A gas model, and Whirlpool publishes no gas cooktop codes | Work the burner checks in order |
| Beeping, then flashing lights | A key held down, before any code appears | Clear anything resting on the panel |
| F2E1 | One or more touch keys read as permanently pressed | Controls off, clean the panel, cut power one minute |
| A code starting F0 | An induction cooktop rather than a radiant one | Not work we take on a cooktop |
Cycling on and off is what a Whirlpool radiant element is supposed to do. It cycles even on High, to keep the cooktop away from extreme temperatures, and Whirlpool prints that as normal operation.
The behavior that most looks like a dying element is the cooktop protecting itself. When internal components run hot, it reduces the power of every element in use without any visual or audible feedback. No code, no light, no beep. Whirlpool’s instruction is to let it cool for thirty minutes.
A Whirlpool electric cooktop not working at all is usually simpler than that. Control Lock is the most common cause, and it clears by holding the button for three seconds. On a knob model the knob has to be pushed in before it turns. On a tap touch model a power level has to be chosen within about ten seconds.
Whirlpool’s instruction here is one line and it draws no exceptions. Do not cook on a broken cooktop, because cleaning solutions and spillovers can reach through the break and create a shock risk. Turn the appliance off and contact a technician.
There is no carve-out for a hairline crack away from the elements, and no cracked-glass article anywhere in Whirlpool’s support tree.
Whirlpool names two causes. A heavy object dropped on the glass will crack it. A hot lid left on a cooling top can trap air and break the glass when it comes off.
A Whirlpool cooktop carries twelve months of parts and labor from the date of delivery, not the date of purchase. After that there is no second tier. Whirlpool’s years two through five list names sealed refrigeration parts on two refrigerator types, and no cooktop part at all.
Not an element, not a gas burner, not the glass, not the touch control. That is the opposite of what most owners expect, and the expectation has a source.
KitchenAid cooktops get a dedicated cooktop warranty that Whirlpool cooktops do not. Its second through fifth year tier covers parts only, and it names electric elements, gas burners, touch control parts and thermal-shock cracking of the glass. Same corporate family, near-identical paperwork, different coverage.
| Question | Whirlpool's own position |
|---|---|
| How long | Twelve months, parts and labor, from the date of delivery |
| A cracked top | Cosmetic damage, excluded unless reported within thirty days of delivery |
| A drop-in set into a counter | Built-in fixtures that block access are excluded, countertops named |
| Outside parts and outside service | They do not void the warranty, and Whirlpool will not pay for damage they cause |
Smelling gas is not a service call. Whirlpool’s instruction is to light nothing, touch no electrical switch, and use no phone inside the building. Call the gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone, and the fire department if the supplier cannot be reached. The appliance company comes after the supply is safe.
Whirlpool adds the line that answers the obvious objection. Gas leaks cannot always be detected by smell, and it recommends a leak detector listed by UL or CSA. A faint smell while a burner is running is normal.
Whirlpool also names the work that has to go to a trained person. Any gas conversion, any dual valve flame adjustment, and a sealed burner that will not light after the cap check. Never run a cooktop to warm a room either, because the manual names carbon monoxide as the consequence.
Leave, then call the gas supplier from another building. Call the fire department if you cannot reach them.
Keep away and call the fire department. Never put water on an oil or grease fire.
Whirlpool prints one sentence about elevation in its gas cooktop manual, and Denver sits below the line. No high altitude gas conversion is necessary for elevations up to 6,000 feet. Denver Metro Area sits around 5,280 feet, so no conversion kit and no orifice change is called for.
A second sentence in the same manual gets read as a derate and is not one. The BTU ratings printed on the model and rating plate are stated for elevations up to 2,000 feet. That is a reference condition for the plate, and Whirlpool publishes no derate figure for a cooktop.
The electric documents say nothing about altitude at all. What matters locally is supply voltage instead. Many Denver condo and apartment buildings run 208 volts rather than 240, and the same model is rated lower there. A 30 inch WCE55US0H is rated 6.7 kW at 240 volts and 5.0 kW at 208.
Whirlpool sets the gas conversion line at 6,000 feet, and Denver Metro Area sits below it.
Its BTU figures are stated for up to 2,000 feet, which is not a derate instruction.
Whirlpool cooktop calls sort into three piles. Some are settings and seating that an owner can fix in ten minutes. One pile belongs to the gas supplier or an electrician, and Whirlpool says so itself. The rest are ours.
On a gas cooktop that will not light I usually ask what was cleaned last, before anything comes apart. The answer decides the visit more often than any other question.
Our technicians are insured, and we cover Whirlpool gas, radiant and coil cooktops across Denver Metro Area. That sits alongside the rest of our cooktop repair work. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts. Whirlpool cooktop parts are ordered against the model number, and the brand’s own parts label is FSP.
If the cooktop wears a different badge, our KitchenAid cooktop page and Bosch cooktop page cover the same work. A new unit going into a counter belongs to cooktop installation instead. To book, use our contact page, and our pricing page sets out how a visit is charged.
Start with the burner caps. Lift each one, match its marking to the base, line the hole up with the electrode, and set it back firmly. Then check the power, because a Whirlpool gas cooktop needs 120 volts to spark, and confirm the shut-off valve is open.
They are type markings, on the underside of the cap and inside the top of the base. They keep each cap on its own burner, because the burners look alike. Whirlpool prints the markings and never says what they stand for, so neither do we.
Clear clogged ports with a straight pin, and not with a wooden toothpick, which can break off inside the port. Do not enlarge or distort a port. Grates can go in the dishwasher on the most aggressive cycle and the caps cannot. Let the caps dry fully before they go back on.
Whirlpool publishes no owner procedure for that, and its instruction runs the other way. Do not service the sealed burner yourself, and contact a trained repair specialist.
Its documents name the igniter and the electrode, and no part called a spark module. A search for a Whirlpool cooktop spark module not working lands on that same assembly.
We cover Whirlpool cooktops across Denver Metro Area. Bring the model number to the call, because the prefix decides whether the cooktop is one we take.
That is the design. A radiant element cycles on and off even at the highest setting, to keep the cooktop away from extreme temperatures. If several elements are underperforming too, the cooktop may have cut its own power with no code and no beep.
Tell us whether the surface is gas or electric radiant when you book. That one detail decides the visit, and induction is the one family we turn down.
