Amana Range Ovens in Denver Metro: What Decides the Repair

Amana oven repair starts with the range around the oven, because the model decides the fuel, the controls and Amana’s checks. Every oven in Amana’s current lineup sits inside a freestanding range, gas or electric, with knobs or a keypad. One fact first: an Amana gas oven with a broiler drawer takes 20 to 40 seconds to light. Amana’s documents call that delay normal.

Knob or Keypad, Gas or Electric: Which Amana Oven You Have

The control decides most of what follows. Knob ovens have no display, and the Amana documents we read print no codes for them. Keypad ovens show messages and give the owner a temperature offset. Five of the families below self-clean.

This page covers what happens inside the oven. That means bake, broil, ignition, temperature, self-clean and the door lock. Burners, cooktop elements and the range as a whole are on our Amana range page. Our Amana cooking appliances page sets the oven beside the stove around it.

The plate names your family. On the 30-inch broiler-drawer gas ranges, open the broiler drawer and look at the left side of its bottom. Our range page maps the plate for every other class.

  • Electric, knob control: AFCS2530T, the older ACR4203MN and the 20-inch AEP222VA. Amana’s control guide puts the older ACR2303MF in this group too.
  • Electric, keypad control: ACR4303MF, ACR4303MM, AER6303MF, AER6303MM and AER6203MS, plus the self-cleaning AER6603SF, AER6603SM and older ACR4503SF.
  • Gas, knob control, broiler drawer: AGR4203MN, the older AGR4230BA and the 20-inch AGG222VD.
  • Gas, keypad control, broiler drawer: AGR6303MM, plus the closeout AGR5330BA on an older control.
  • Gas, keypad control, self-cleaning: AGR6603SF and AGR6603SM, which broil at the top of the oven.

Lock, Offset and Other Messages on an Amana Oven Display

Amana oven error codes such as F1 E0 are covered on our Amana range page, with the steps Amana prints.

Everything else the display shows is a setting or a state. The tables below give Amana’s meaning for each, family by family.

An Amana oven display not working at all points at power first. Check the fuse or breaker and a grounded outlet. On the gas models, Amana’s installation documents add that no keypad works if the metal chassis is not grounded. If a fuse or breaker keeps failing, or you doubt the chassis ground, Amana’s documents say to call an electrician.

Display Works but the Oven Never Heats

An Amana oven not heating up while its display works may simply be in Demo Mode. Demo Mode exists for the sales floor. Amana’s control guides for the ACR4303, ACR4503SF, AER and AGR6603 families say that if it is activated, the oven will not work.

Knob ovens give fewer clues. On the knob electric models, the Oven Heating light stays on until the set temperature is reached, then cycles with the element. On the 20-inch AEP222VA, flashing OVEN HEATING lights are Amana’s signal to call for service.

Once the settings are ruled out, an Amana oven element that stays dark is ours to test. The 30-inch electric ovens show it in plain view. If it failed, Amana oven heating element replacement is a job we do, with an OEM element when the supplier has the right one.

Run the checks Amana prints first:

  1. Demo Mode: on the ACR4303, ACR4503SF, AER and AGR6603 families, press OFF/CANCEL, OFF/CANCEL, the Temp/Time up arrow, then TIMER SET•OFF. The same sequence turns it back on.
  2. Control Lock: with a lock symbol showing, hold CONTROL LOCK for 3 seconds. With Loc on the AGR6303MM or AGR5330BA, hold START for 3 seconds.
  3. Delay Start: Amana’s web troubleshooting says to check that it is not set.
  4. A lock that will not release: the same article says you may need to reset power to the range.

Gas Oven Slow to Light, Not Heating or Not Broiling

On the AGR4203MN, AGR4230BA, AGG222VD, AGR6303MM and AGR5330BA, the Amana oven igniter is a glow bar, not a spark. It heats to bright orange, and the burner should light in 20 to 40 seconds. Amana’s installation instructions call that delay normal. The oven valve needs time before it opens.

The AGR6603SF and AGR6603SM work differently. Spark igniters light separate bake and broil burners, and Amana’s manual for them says each should light within 8 seconds. Under certain conditions it can take 50 to 60 seconds.

On every broiler-drawer model, the burner in the drawer runs while the oven bakes. Amana says to store nothing in the drawer. The AGR6303MM and AGR5330BA documents go further: one burner does both broiling and baking.

An Amana stove oven not working while the burners light points at the oven’s own igniter and gas valve. An Amana oven that won’t light within the times above needs the checks below. Amana’s manuals send a broiler burner that fails to light, with the fuse and breaker fine, to a technician to check the ignition system. Run these checks before booking:

  1. Give it time: allow a glow-bar model the full 40 seconds.
  2. New install or reconnection: turn on any surface burner first to release air from the line.
  3. Regulator shut-off: the AGR4203MN, AGR4230BA, AGR6303MM and AGR5330BA ship with it ON. On the AGR4203MN, AGR4230BA and AGR6303MM it sits in the back right-hand corner of the broiler compartment. If the range does not work, verify it is ON.
  4. Keypad models: check that Control Lock is off and that Delay Start is not set.
  5. Outlet: the ignition needs a grounded 120 V outlet with correct polarity, and Amana says it will not operate otherwise.
  6. Still cold on an AGR6303MM or AGR6603: with the supply valve open and no heat after 5 minutes, press CANCEL and call a qualified technician.
  • Sounds at ignition

A whoosh or a poof, a single pop from the gas valve, then a muffled ticking as the burner cycles. The AGR4203MN and AGR6303MM manuals list these as normal.

  • Yellow or noisy flames

On propane, Amana says the range may have been converted improperly, a job for a trained repair specialist.

  • Broiling

Every broiler-drawer model broils with both the broiler and oven doors closed. The AGR4203MN manual says to preheat the broiler; the 20-inch AGG222VD manual says not to.

Baking Too Hot or Too Cold: Bake Test, Then the Offset

Amana’s manuals for its keypad ovens and the AEP222VA say not to judge the oven with a thermometer. The reason Amana gives is cycling. In the keypad control guides, the elements or burners cycle, and most thermometers react too slowly to read it.

Amana’s own check is a bake test. Bake one can of refrigerated biscuits by the package directions. If they are not done and evenly browned in that time, the oven may need calibrating.

Rule out bakeware color, rack position and pan spacing first. Amana ties level to baking too. Our Amana range page shows how to check it. To calibrate an Amana oven, use the offset below for your family.

The Amana documents we read name no oven temperature sensor and print no test for one. A temperature that will not settle after the offset is ours to diagnose.

  • ACR4303, ACR4503SF, AER, AGR6603 and AGR6303MM: hold the Temp/Time down arrow 5 seconds until the current setting shows. Adjust in 5°F steps, up to 30°F either way, then press START.
  • AGR5330BA: hold BAKE 5 seconds until the setting shows, then adjust in 10°F steps, up to 30°F either way. START saves it; OFF/CANCEL quits.
  • Knob models: the Amana documents we read print no calibration for them. The knob gas and AEP222VA manuals adjust the setting instead. Set it 10 to 30°F lower if bottoms brown too much, or 25°F higher for slow baking.

Self-Clean Will Not Start or the Door Stays Locked

Of the ranges Amana lists today, five families self-clean: the AER6603SF, AER6603SM, AGR6603SF, AGR6603SM and the older ACR4503SF. The rest of that lineup is manual-clean. No Amana range has steam clean.

Three things stop a cycle from starting. Amana’s manual for the electric self-cleaning ranges names them. The door is not fully closed, the cooktop is in use, or a cycle reached cleaning temperature in the last 12 hours. The AGR6603 manual prints the same 12-hour delay for some models.

During and after a cycle, the door stays locked while the oven is too hot. The display shows cool and locked, or a lock symbol. Never force the door. It unlocks as the oven cools.

Amana’s website adds steps for a door that will not open, written for its ovens in general rather than one model:

  1. Locked when you start the oven: press Cancel/Off to start a latch reset, wait 20 to 30 seconds, then open the door.
  2. Still locked: switch the power off and back on at the breaker or fuse box.
  3. Cycle started by mistake: press Cancel/Off; the door opens once the oven has cooled to about 200°F.
  4. Power failure mid-clean: select Self Clean again, then Cancel, and restart after a few minutes.

If You Smell Gas Near an Amana Gas Oven

Every Amana gas range manual we read prints the same safety block, under the heading What to do if you smell gas. Its five steps are below, word for word from the manual for the AGR4203MN and AGR4230BA. Follow them before anything else.

  1. Do not try to light any appliance.
  2. Do not touch any electrical switch.
  3. Do not use any phone in your building.
  4. Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone. Follow the gas supplier’s instructions.
  5. If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire department.

When to Call Wilson & Myers

Book us once Amana’s checks are done and the oven still will not heat, light, broil, hold temperature or finish a clean. Whatever is left after them is ours. That includes a glow bar that never lights the burner, a temperature that will not settle, and a door locked on a cold oven.

I usually start with the model number and the display. Those two decide which of Amana’s checks apply. We test before we replace anything, the Amana oven control board included.

We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts. Every technician we send is insured. Every paid repair carries our 100-day labor warranty on the work on your invoice.

Inside Amana’s first year, Amana’s warranty service comes first. Use the contact printed on your Amana warranty. Otherwise, book a repair online with the model number and what the display shows.

Two Old Amana Gas Range Recalls That Reach the Oven

Neither record covers a current Amana range. CPSC 01-236 covers the ACF3315A (T, K), ACF3335A (W, C, B, S) and ACF3375A (W, C, B, S) gas ranges within listed serial ranges. Their broil and self-clean modes could emit high carbon monoxide and overheat the storage drawer, and CPSC says to stop using both. CPSC 99-164 covers AGDS901E and AGDS901WW slide-ins, whose self-clean lock could release early, and says not to use self-clean.

CPSC lists a free remedy for these units. We check the plate against both before any oven work. Serial ranges and where each tag sits are on our Amana range page.

Amana’s Warranty on the Oven, and What It Leaves Out

The oven shares the range’s warranty: one year of parts and labor, as in-home repair. Inside that year, the free route is Amana’s warranty service, through the contact printed on your Amana warranty. We are not that service. After the year, the repair is yours to buy and ours to do.

Several exclusions bear on oven calls. Light bulbs are consumables and not covered. The warranty also excludes in-home instruction on using the product, and Demo Mode and Control Lock are settings in the control guide.

Household wiring is excluded too. Amana’s 2023 text says an outside repair or third-party parts will not void the warranty, though damage they cause is excluded. Older texts, the AGR6303MM’s among them, lack that sentence. Read the text that came with your range.

Amana Oven Repair FAQ

  • How do I reset my Amana oven?

Start with Control Lock and Demo Mode. Control Lock clears by holding CONTROL LOCK for 3 seconds, or START on the AGR6303MM and AGR5330BA. Demo Mode clears with the four-key sequence above.

Door locked when you start the oven? Press Cancel/Off and wait 20 to 30 seconds. If it stays locked, Amana’s article names a power cycle at the breaker or fuse box.

Setting the time after a power cut is on our Amana range page.

  • Why is my Amana oven not working but the stove top is?

On a gas range the oven has its own igniter and gas valve. The broiler-drawer models light it with a glow bar that takes 20 to 40 seconds. Check that the regulator shut-off is ON.

On a keypad oven, rule out Control Lock, Delay Start and Demo Mode. Demo Mode applies to the electric keypad models and the AGR6603. Past those, the rest is ours to test.

  • How do I self-clean an Amana oven?

Of the ranges Amana lists today, only the AER6603SF, AER6603SM, AGR6603SF, AGR6603SM and ACR4503SF self-clean.

Remove the racks, broiler pan, foil and cookware, and wipe the door edge without moving the gasket. Close the door fully and start the cycle. The door locks itself. Keep children away from the oven during the cycle, and do not touch it.

On the AER6603SF and AER6603SM the cycle is adjustable from 2 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes, cooldown included. On the AGR6603, grates and burner caps never go through the cycle. Self-clean fumes can kill some birds. Move them to another closed, well-ventilated room.

  • How do I change an Amana oven from Celsius to Fahrenheit?

On the electric keypad models, the AGR6603 and the AGR6303MM, hold the up arrow for 5 seconds, and repeat to switch back. On the closeout AGR5330BA, hold BROIL for 5 seconds instead. Knob ovens have no display to switch.

  • Why does my Amana oven take so long to preheat?

Amana’s own article lists the usual causes. A door opened during preheat, unused racks and foil on the oven bottom all add time. So does a range installed on 208 V instead of 240 V, and the article also names the hidden bake element of the gas models.

The knob gas models need about 8 to 15 minutes. Their manuals add that a higher setting does not preheat the oven any faster.
