GE Ice Maker Repair in Denver Metro

Three questions settle a GE refrigerator ice maker repair before a part is ordered. Is the icemaker switched on and cold enough? Is water reaching it? Has the module itself failed?

A GE ice maker not working in a new refrigerator may simply be early. GE allows 12 to 24 hours for first ice. This page covers the icemakers inside GE refrigerators and GE’s 15-inch undercounter ice machines.

Which GE Icemaker You Have

The model number answers this before anyone opens the freezer. On a top-freezer, a second letter I means a factory icemaker, while T or P means none. On a bottom-freezer, D is a drawer with an icemaker and B is a door without one. GE fridge ice maker repair starts with those letters.

Symptoms follow the platform here. On an In-Door model, a GE side-by-side refrigerator ice maker not working may just be switched off at the control panel. Other side-by-sides put a power switch on the icemaker itself, the first place to look for a GE freezer ice maker not working.

A GE bottom freezer ice maker not working has a slide switch on the icemaker too. French doors are different again. GE French door refrigerator ice maker problems split between the door icemaker and an IM5D in the freezer.

Kits follow GE’s own rules. A top-freezer sold IM4D Ready needs a red-label icemaker, and GE says one without the label will not function. The kit’s own valve and fill tube go in too, because GE says the old valve will not pass enough water. The water line itself is the owner’s under the kit warranty, and our refrigerator water line installation covers it.

A first letter P marks a GE Profile model, which belongs on our GE Profile page. GE’s current standalone chest and upright freezers carry no icemaker, so our GE freezer page covers them. Refrigerators, wine coolers, dishwashers, disposals and trash compactors each have a page under GE kitchen appliances.

Find your model’s row in the table below. Check its switch first, then compare your bucket with the daily output GE prints.

Slow, Paused or Switched Off: Ice Problems That Are Not Faults

A GE ice maker not making ice may just be switched off, because GE ships its icemakers with the power setting in the Off position. Plugged in is not enough, either. GE’s own Truth or Myth page calls that a myth: the water must be connected and the icemaker turned on.

Temperature is the other quiet cause. GE recommends a 0°F freezer setting. The icemaker will not start a fill until it has cooled well below freezing.

A GE freezer not making ice may simply be too warm. GE suggests one degree colder every 24 hours. A freezer that cannot get there has a cooling fault, which belongs with our GE refrigerator page.

Several GE refrigerator ice maker problems are pauses rather than faults.

  • Feeler arm up or paddle back: the icemaker is paused.
  • Cubes piled under the arm: a heap shuts it off, so level them by hand.
  • Sabbath mode: it stops ice on In-Door side-by-sides and undercounter machines, not on GE top-freezers.
  • A packed top shelf: the In-Door Icemaker needs cold air from the top of the freezer.
  • Buzzing with no water connected: GE says the switch left on will damage the water valve.

GE’s Three-Push Reset and the Icemakers It Covers

A GE refrigerator ice maker not making ice with a green light flashing under the On/Off switch has entered its fault state. That happens when a harvest runs past 30 minutes. GE’s advice on how to reset GE refrigerator ice maker faults applies only to icemakers with that switch and light. GE’s manuals show them on some models without naming which.

If the light keeps flashing after the GE refrigerator ice maker reset, the icemaker often needs replacing. A cube jamming the rake can be cleared. A mold that never warms, or a rake that will not stop, needs a new icemaker.

Here is how to reset GE ice maker models that have both. GE warns the icemaker body can get very hot during harvest.

  1. Off: turn the icemaker off for 15 seconds, then back on.
  2. Paddle: push it in 3 times, and only 3 times, within 15 seconds.
  3. Harvest: within 3 minutes the heater runs and the rake turns once.
  4. Fill and check: water flows for 4 to 7 seconds, and the green light turns solid.

Lights and Display Words GE Uses Instead of Error Codes

The GE owner documents for these icemakers print lights and display words, not numbered error codes. GE ice maker troubleshooting starts with reading that pattern off the machine.

Is Water Reaching the Icemaker? GE’s Two Owner Tests

A GE ice maker not filling with water can have a frozen fill tube, and GE notes the dispenser still works when it does. The icemaker has to come out to confirm it. GE leaves that check to a service technician.

A GE refrigerator ice maker not getting water may sit behind a kinked line. Pulling the refrigerator out can kink it, GE notes. A clogged supply line or shutoff valve is a plumber’s job in GE’s manuals, and so is low house pressure.

Water in the wrong place is different. When a GE ice maker leaks after a kit install, GE lists foam in the fill cup and a fill tube not seated in it. Ice on a side-by-side freezer floor is not the icemaker: GE says the defrost drain tube may be clogged.

The pressure floor changes by manual. The side-by-side manuals and the GYE22 and GFE28 French door manual print 40 to 120 psi. The bottom-freezer manual, which also covers GNE27 and GFE26 French doors, prints 25 to 120. So does the GPS19 and GPS21 Garage Ready top-freezer manual.

The GIE18 and GTE16 top-freezer manual prints 40 to 120 psi for the icemaker, and 20 to 120 without a water filter. The undercounter machines need 30 to 120. Whatever the floor, GE’s flow article warns that below 40 psi an icemaker may make hollow cubes or slow ice.

Before any of that, GE gives owners two tests that split the icemaker from its water.

  1. Fill test: pour about 4 ounces of cold water into an empty mold. If it freezes and ejects within 3 hours, the longer of GE’s two waits, the icemaker works.
  2. Flow test: dispense water into a measuring cup for 20 seconds. Under 8 ounces means the flow is probably inadequate.
  3. Bypass plug: repeat with GE’s bypass plug in place of the filter. A pass means a new filter, and a fail means poor flow upstream.

Ice in the Bucket but Nothing at the Dispenser

A GE ice maker not dispensing ice may be making ice perfectly well. The fault sits past the bucket. Frost on the GE ice maker auger motor is one cause GE names. Bagged ice in a door bucket may not crush or dispense, and cans chilled in the door bin can jam the auger.

GE gives an owner check for each stage.

  • Jammed chute: remove the bucket and push ice through the chute with a wooden spoon.
  • Crushed but no cubes: bucket out, door closed, press the dispenser. No loud snap means service.
  • Auger frost: set cubed ice and hold a glass on the cradle for 30 to 60 seconds. Nothing after a minute means service.
  • Flap left open: run the dispenser with the door open and the bucket out. A flap that stays open needs a technician.

GE’s Undercounter Ice Machines and the Door Kit Question

GE files two 15-inch machines under its own brand. UNC15NPWII makes nugget ice and has been built since April 2024, after the earlier UNC15NPRII. UCC15NPRII makes clear ice and has been built since March 2022.

The door is the confusing part. GE pictures the machine with no badge, and the U in its model number stands for Universal. GE sells door kits for it styled Monogram, Profile or Café. So an owner may call the same machine a Monogram or a Café, and GE ice machine repair is still the job.

Countertop machines are another story. A GE nugget ice maker not making ice on a countertop is a GE Profile Opal, with a model number such as OPAL01 or XPIO. Countertop ice makers sit outside what we service, and GE routes Opal owners to its own Opal support team.

On GE’s undercounter machines, these are the owner-side issues GE describes.

  • Melting in the bin

The storage bin is not refrigerated, so GE calls melting normal. It keeps the ice fresh.

  • Standing water

A kinked or restricted drain backs water into the bin. Gravity models need a building drain below the drain tube.

  • Slow ice

GE says output falls as the room warms and is severely reduced above 90°F. Unplug, then vacuum the condenser behind the toe kick.

  • Scale

GE asks for its Clean cycle twice a year. On the clear model, half-formed cubes mean scale.

  • Ice stuck to the liner

GE’s nugget manual forbids an ice pick or any sharp tool. The liner hides flammable refrigerant tubing.

When to Call Wilson & Myers

Before booking for a GE refrigerator ice maker not working, run GE’s own checks in order. Confirm the switch or button is on and the feeler arm is down. Give the freezer a 0°F setting and 24 hours. Then check the supply valve, the line and a filter older than 6 months, and finish with the fill test.

That is GE refrigerator ice maker troubleshooting as GE writes it. What is ours starts where it ends. That means a frozen fill tube, a light still flashing after the reset, or a dispenser failing GE’s tests. Sealed-system work on the undercounter machines is ours too, and our technicians are EPA-608 certified for refrigerant handling.

In my experience, the first useful question on a GE ice call is whether the icemaker has a switch or a button. That answer tells us the platform. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts.

One Year on GE Refrigerators, Five Years on the Undercounter Sealed System

The GE ice maker warranty depends on what the icemaker sits in. A GE refrigerator carries one year on parts and labor, plus thirty days on a supplied water filter. The five-year sealed-system line in those manuals is printed for GE Profile or Café models only. The IM4D and IM5D kits carry one year each.

The undercounter machines add five years on the sealed refrigeration system, labor included. GE’s manual lists the compressor, condenser, evaporator and connecting tubing. The spec sheet summary leaves out the condenser. The written warranty in the manual governs.

GE excludes damage from running the icemaker with no water supply, damage from a non-GE water filter and improper installation. A GE refrigerator ice maker problem inside the term goes through GE’s warranty service. Check the purchase date before booking.

Garages, Cold Water Lines and Undercounter Rooms in Denver Metro

If a line runs through a garage or crawl space that freezes in a Denver Metro winter, GE’s cold rules apply. GE says icemaker tubing must not go where temperatures fall below freezing. GE’s 2026 side-by-side manual requires the water supply disconnected when the room drops below 54°F, Garage Ready models included.

The undercounter machines are indoor appliances, with a 55°F room minimum and a 100°F maximum. To winterize one, turn it off with the Power button so the tank drains. Unplugging it first leaves water inside.

GE Ice Maker Repair FAQ

How to reset ice maker on GE French door refrigerator models?

GE’s three-push reset is written only for icemakers with an On/Off switch and a green light. The French door story is different. Many GE French doors use the ICE MAKER button, so a GE French door refrigerator ice maker not working may be switched off there.

A GE French door fridge not making ice after a day should get the fill test. Check the freezer drawer as well. A GE French door ice maker not making ice in the freezer drawer may be the IM5D, which shows Ice Bottom ON once installed.

Why is my GE fridge not making ice?

Check GE’s causes in order: switched off, feeler arm up, freezer too warm, no water at the mold, then a failed icemaker. The first three take minutes to check. A GE fridge ice maker not making ice after installation may just need the 12 to 24 hours GE allows.

Where is the GE ice maker reset button?

There is no single GE ice maker reset button location, because the GE ice maker reset uses the icemaker’s own switch and paddle. The switch does the work. Nothing about how to reset a GE ice maker involves a hidden button.

The GE bottom freezer ice maker reset button location is not a button either. GE’s bottom-freezer manual pictures a slide ON/OFF switch on the icemaker itself.

Why is my GE refrigerator not making ice but water works?

Water at the dispenser proves the supply reaches the refrigerator. GE notes the dispenser keeps working when the icemaker fill tube has frozen, and confirming that means removing the icemaker.

So with a GE fridge ice maker not working but water works, run the fill test first. If the batch freezes and ejects, the icemaker is fine.

Is it the ice maker if my GE dispenses ice but no water?

Not while the ice keeps coming. On GE’s In-Door side-by-sides, the water tank can freeze when the controls are too cold. GE says to set the control warmer and wait 24 hours. If water still does not dispense, GE calls for service, and that repair sits with our GE refrigerator page.

Why is my GE ice maker making loud noise?

GE lists a buzz as the water valve fills, and the sound of cubes dropping, as normal. With low house pressure, you may hear the icemaker cycle several times for one batch.

A GE ice maker making loud noise with no water connected is different. Frequent buzzing then means the valve is being damaged, so switch the icemaker off.
