This page covers GE-badge chest and upright freezers. For a GE freezer not working while its lights are on, the first cause GE lists is a control turned to OFF. On FCM5 and FCM7 chests, OFF stops the cooling but leaves the power on, so any power light keeps glowing.
All seven current GE chests defrost by hand, and all nine uprights are frost-free. GE’s parts diagrams show the gap. The one for an FUF21SMRFWW upright lists a defrost heater, a defrost thermostat and an evaporator fan motor. The one for an FCM22DLCWW chest lists none of them.
Older GE uprights with an FUM model number also defrost by hand, so read the model number before assuming anything.
A GE bottom freezer not freezing is a refrigerator problem, as is any freezer section inside a GE refrigerator. Both belong on our GE refrigerator page. No current GE freezer lists an ice maker, so ice goes to our GE ice maker page. Wine coolers, dishwashers, disposals and trash compactors have their own pages under GE kitchen appliances too.
Crosley, Hotpoint and Haier freezers turn up on GE’s own site but carry other badges. For those, our freezer repair page is the place.
Find your model in the table below. Its Control column tells you where to go next: a dial sends you to the chest lights, electronic to the upright panel and codes.
| Models | Cabinet | Control | Panel |
|---|---|---|---|
| FUF14DLRWW, FUF17DLRWW, FUF21DLRWW | Upright, frost-free | Electronic, on the door | Display, High Temp and Door Open alarms, Demo light |
| FUF14SMRWW, FUF17SMRWW, FUF21SMRWW | Upright, frost-free | Electronic, on the door | Same as the DL models |
| FUF14QRRWW, FUF17QRRWW, FUF21QRRWW | Upright, frost-free | Electronic, inside the cabinet | Setting lights, no alarm listed |
| FCM16DLWW, FCM22DLWW | Chest, manual defrost | Dial, Cold to Coldest | Red, yellow and green lights, alarm |
| FCM9SRWW, FCM11SRWW, FCM16SLWW | Chest, manual defrost | Dial, OFF and 1 to 7 | Red and green lights |
| FCM5STWW, FCM7STWW | Chest, manual defrost | Dial, OFF and Min to Max | Power-On light on some models |
GE freezer troubleshooting, in GE’s own manuals and support pages, includes several things that look like faults and are not. None of these needs a technician.
A GE chest freezer FCM16DLWW or FCM22DLWW has red, yellow and green status lights and an audible alarm. The FCM9SRWW, FCM11SRWW and FCM16SLWW have two lights. Red is High Temp, and green is Power.
A GE freezer light not working on these chests is a power question first. GE’s list for a dark green light starts with the cord, breaker and fuse. Last comes a burned-out light, which service replaces.
On an FCM11SRWW, watch the red light, not for a beep. Its manual describes only lights, though its product page lists an alarm. The FCM5STWW and FCM7STWW have no alarm at all. On GE’s 2014 FCM15DH chests, the alarm sits below the dial on a three-position switch, and 0 turns it off.
| Light | Models | GE's meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red, three-light chest | FCM16DL, FCM22DL | Above 23°F for 60 minutes, off below 20°F | Check the lid and load, then give it time |
| Red, two-light chest | FCM9SR, FCM11SR, FCM16SL | Above 23°F, off below 23°F | The same checks |
| Yellow flashing, red on | FCM16DL, FCM22DL | Flashes while the red light is on | Press Alarm Reset |
| Yellow flashing, red off | FCM16DL, FCM22DL | The home lost power | Press Alarm Reset, check the food |
| Green dark | All five above | No power, or a burned-out light | Check cord, breaker and fuse |
| Power-On light | FCM5ST, FCM7ST, some models | Power is on, even at OFF | Turn the dial to a setting |
GE upright freezer troubleshooting starts at the panel. A door-control upright can sit in Demo mode, with the Demo light on and the freezer not operating.
GE’s two current upright manuals give different exits. The 2019 manual says press Alarm Reset, then the minus and plus pads while holding Control Lock for 5 seconds. The 2021 manual says hold Alarm Reset instead. Try your own manual’s sequence first, then the other.
GE’s support article puts the High Temp alarm on its uprights at 20°F. The QRR models keep their control inside the cabinet, and GE lists no alarm for them.
GE says fault codes are programmed into many electronic upright freezer controls. It publishes three of them. It does not say which current models show them, and neither current upright manual prints one. It links the list from its support pages for the GE upright freezer FUF21DLRWW and the FUF21SMRWW.
If a code returns after a 30-second power cut, GE says service is required and recommends unplugging the freezer until then. Plan for the food first. GE’s 2008 upright manual handled its single E code differently: the freezer keeps running until serviced.
| Panel | GE's meaning | GE's instruction |
|---|---|---|
| High Temp and alarm | The cabinet is too warm | Press Alarm Reset; it sounds again in six hours if still warm |
| High Temp, display flashing | A power outage warmed the cabinet | Press Alarm Reset; the flashing is a reminder |
| Door Open and alarm | Door open over 2 minutes | Close it or press Door Open |
| E and 7 | A button stuck over 30 seconds | Cut power 30 seconds, then restore |
| E and 8 | The thermistor is shorted | Cut power 30 seconds; service if it returns |
| E and 9 | The thermistor is open | Cut power 30 seconds; service if it returns |
If your GE freezer lives in a Denver garage, compare the coldest the garage gets with GE’s numbers. Every current GE freezer manual allows 0°F to 110°F. Outside that range, GE says only that the freezer will not maintain proper temperatures. The GE freezer documents we checked name no damage below 0°F and no cold-weather setting.
GE’s Garage Ready top-freezer refrigerators carry the same label with a 38°F floor, and our GE refrigerator page covers them.
Older units differ. GE calls its 2018 and newer freezers garage ready, yet several of its manuals from 2008 to 2016 already printed the 0°F floor. GE’s 2014 manual for the FCM15DH chest family sets 32°F, so an older freezer’s own manual decides.
Switched off, it is a different case. GE’s upright manuals say a freezer that is not operating can sit in an unheated room without damage to the cabinet or mechanism.
The room range in every current GE freezer manual.

For a GE freezer not getting cold enough, measure before touching the control. GE’s support article says air readings mislead. Put the thermometer in ice cream frozen at least 12 hours, or between two packages frozen over a day. GE says upright and chest freezers should read -5°F to 6°F.
A GE freezer not freezing while it runs has a short owner list in GE’s manuals. A package holding the door or lid, frequent openings, a control set too warm and a big load of warm food all appear. So does a freezer plugged in hours ago. GE’s upright manuals limit fresh food to 3 pounds per cubic foot at a time.
Past those, GE names the suspect parts itself. They are the temperature control, a relay or guardette, open wiring and the compressor. A GE upright freezer not freezing adds the defrost control, since it is frost-free. Our walk-through of a freezer that will not freeze covers most of those parts, for any brand.
A GE freezer leaking water splits by cabinet. GE says its chests have no defrost drain tube or drip pan, while current uprights have both. On a chest, check that both drain plugs went back in after the last defrost. On the FCM5 and FCM7, GE calls a drip from the back of the lid during defrost normal.
On an upright, GE’s FUF21SMRFWW diagram names a drain trough and an auxiliary condenser drain tray, without saying which one leaks. Tracing that is diagnostic work.
GE’s upright manuals name two causes for a GE freezer door not closing by itself. The legs need adjusting, or a package blocks it. GE sets the front legs so the door closes easily from halfway open.
After cleaning a GE freezer door gasket, those manuals call for petroleum jelly. A thin layer goes on the hinge side. On a chest, GE levels the cabinet side to side and front to back so the lid seals. GE’s FCM22DLCWW diagram lists the lid gasket only as part of the lid assembly.
GE wants a chest defrosted before frost passes 1/4 inch, or 1/2 inch on the FCM5 and FCM7.
Start with the checks in the list below, each taken from GE’s own manuals or support pages.
GE’s documents send several jobs to a technician. They include a code that returns, a burned-out chest light, a damaged cord and chest hinges needing adjustment. Sealed-system work is ours too, handled by EPA-608 certified technicians. The compressor, thermistor, control boards, defrost heater and GE freezer fan are ours as well.
I usually ask for the full model number first. GE’s parts site ties specific parts to a manufacturing code in that number. A GE upright freezer FUF21SMRWW, for example, appears there as FUF21SMRAWW through FUF21SMRFWW.
Inside the first year, the repair belongs to GE’s warranty service. After that, we source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts.

On a GE chest, frost is expected, because all seven current chests defrost by hand. GE’s manuals expect a defrost about twice a year in most climates.
On a frost-free upright, GE’s causes are a door left open, openings too frequent or too long, and humid weather. Frost returning despite a good seal needs a diagnosis.
GE gives two figures. Its Power Outage Promise, on its freezer page and several spec sheets, says 48 hours. The FCM9SR and FCM11SR sheets define frozen there as 32°F or lower. Every current owner’s manual says 24 hours, provided warm air is kept out.
Past 24 hours out of operation, the manuals say to add dry ice or move the food to a frozen food locker. GE’s warranty does not cover spoiled food.
On a GE upright, the label sits on the top inner case liner, toward the front. A GE chest freezer FCM16SLWW has it on the right-hand side above the machine compartment cover. So do the FCM9, FCM11, FCM16DL and FCM22. The FCM5 and FCM7 carry a plate at the top center of the back.
GE says a model number always begins and ends with a letter.
The GE freezer warranty runs one year from the original purchase, parts and labor, for a part that fails from a defect. It passes to later owners for home use in the USA, with proof of the original purchase date. Inside that year, GE’s warranty service does the repair.
The FCM5 and FCM7 manual lets GE replace the freezer with a certificate redeemable at a retailer. Their product pages link a sheet without that clause. No current GE freezer warranty adds a compressor or sealed-system term.
Not under GE’s current manuals. They ask for the freezer’s own grounded 115-volt outlet, with no adapter and no extension cord. The larger chest manuals recommend a separate circuit and an outlet no switch can turn off.
All 16 current GE freezers use R600a, which is isobutane. GE’s manuals describe it as a natural gas with high environmental compatibility that is also combustible. They warn against damaging the refrigerant tubing.
