GE Trash Compactor Repair in Denver Metro

After several cycles in a row, a silent GE compactor may just be waiting out its thermal motor reset. A stuck ram is different, because that is where GE’s help stops and ours starts. GE’s catalog files its Universal UCG compactors under the plain GE brand, and we repair the older GE Profile GCG models as well.

Which Compactors Carry the GE Name

GE lists four current Universal compactors, all 15 inch built-in models. The GE 15″ built-in compactor UCG1500NBB is the black one. The UCG1500NWW comes in white. The UCG1520NSS is stainless steel, and the UCG1510NII takes a custom panel.

GE has since discontinued four earlier models: the GE 15″ built-in trash compactor UCG1600LWW, the UCG1600LBB, the UCG1650LII and the UCG1680LSS. GE’s current owner’s manuals still cover all four.

The older GCG1500, 1520, 1530, 1540, 1550, 1580 and 1700 compactors carry the GE Profile badge in GE’s catalog and on its parts site. GE’s manual for the GCG1500, 1580 and 1700 prints the same troubleshooting rows as the Universal manual, word for word. Owners of those three can use the checks below.

GE’s parts lists give the discontinued UCG1600LWW the same switch, chain, power screw and power nut numbers as the GCG1580. The motor and drive gear numbers differ.

GE files its ZCG compactors under Monogram, and Monogram machines are on our GE Monogram page. GE’s dishwasher, disposer, refrigerator, freezer, ice maker and wine cooler each have their own page under our GE kitchen appliance repair section.

A Pedal That Starts the Cycle, a Knob GE Calls a Key Lock

On a Universal model the foot pedal does two jobs. Press it to open the drawer. Lift it until you hear the cycle start, then let go, and the compactor finishes by itself.

The ON/OFF knob hides behind the compactor door. GE’s product pages list a removable key lock. The manual’s lockout is turning this knob to OFF and pulling it off, and GE’s parts list shows no separate key. The knob should always turn easily, GE warns, because forcing it can break the knob and damage the switch.

Two drawer safety switches stop the compactor from cycling until the drawer is fully closed. The ram then travels down, reverses at the bottom of its stroke and returns in under 30 seconds. Cycles get shorter as the drawer fills.

Pulling the drawer during a stroke stops the ram. Closing it completely sends the ram back up. The same manual also warns that opening the door during a cycle may cause damage.

GE Allows These Compactors Built In Only

GE’s installation instructions allow built-in use only. They warn, in capitals, not to operate the compactor free-standing. The cabinet must be firmly attached to the house, because weight on the drawer could tip the compactor.

Two retaining brackets on top screw into the underside of the countertop. Counters of stone, or anything else that will not take screws, get clips instead. Those fasten the unit to the cabinet front.

GE’s warranty excludes failures caused by improper installation. It also excludes a product that is not accessible for the service it needs.

  • Right side

Six inches to the nearest wall or cabinet, for taking the bag out.

  • Front

23 inches, so the drawer can open fully and come out.

  • Power

A grounded 120 volt outlet on a 15 or 20 amp circuit, ideally its own, within reach of the 36 inch cord.

  • Not allowed

An extension cord or adapter plug, or trash left to collect behind the unit, which GE warns could start a fire.

What GE’s Troubleshooting Table Clears Before a Visit

GE prints these rows in the Universal owner’s manual under a “Before you call for service” heading. Its warranty does not cover a compactor that is working as that manual describes. Three more normal behaviors follow the table.

GE troubleshooting rows for Universal compactors
SymptomCause GE givesWhat GE says to do
Will not operate: no powerCord unplugged, or a tripped breaker or blown fusePlug the cord securely into a working outlet, then reset the breaker or replace the fuse
Will not operate: knob or drawerKnob not at ON, or the drawer not firmly closedTurn the knob to ON and close the drawer firmly
Will not operate: pedalFoot pedal not lifted long enoughLift the pedal until the cycle starts, then release it
Will not operate after repeated cyclesThe automatic thermal motor reset has openedWait a few minutes for it to reclose on its own
Drawer will not openRam not all the way upLift the foot pedal and release it so the ram completes a cycle
Drawer hard to closeTrash fallen behind the drawerRemove the trash
Little or no compactionDrawer under half full, or trash stuck between ram and basketKeep loading, and remove any stuck trash
  • Half full

The ram never travels to the bottom, so compaction only shows once the drawer is about half full.

  • Breaking glass

A loud crack is normal, and it can come several cycles after the bottle went in.

  • Small bag tears

Cans and bottles can cause them, and GE says they do not affect performance.

The Bags GE Expects, and What Never Goes In

GE requires its heavy-duty compactor bags, and its support article says commercial trash bags are too large and usually cause problems. A wrinkled bag can catch on the ram.

Buy bags by your full model number. The manual GE links for the GE 15″ built-in compactor UCG1520NSS names a different bag pack than the black and white models’ manual.

GE’s food advice varies as well. The manual accepts some food waste and suggests folded newspaper over messy loads to keep the ram clean. GE’s odor article is stricter and sends food waste to a disposer or the trash can. The UCG1500 parts list carries no deodorizer or odor filter at all.

The manual’s list of what must never be compacted is mostly about fire, explosion and fumes.

  • Explosives: shotgun shells, firearm cartridges and fireworks.
  • Flammables: paint, rags soaked in oil or gasoline, and starting fluid or paint thinner cans.
  • Poisons: containers of strong insecticides or other toxic chemicals.
  • Aerosols: cans holding explosive or highly toxic contents, though GE allows harmless ones such as shaving cream.
  • Anything burning: lit cigarettes, cigars and other hot items.
  • Strong odors: raw meat and fish, rinds, personal hygiene items and disposable diapers.

A Ram Stuck Down Is Where GE Stops Helping

A GE trash compactor stuck with its ram down keeps its drawer shut. GE’s support article offers two checks, and no more. Lift and release the foot pedal, then confirm the cord and breaker.

In GE’s words, “there is no DIY assistance or additional troubleshooting” because of the difficulty of this repair. GE draws the same line twice more. A drawer still stuck after a pedal cycle requires service. GE also recommends service for one that will not close with nothing in the way.

The Universal manual adds a reason not to improvise: do not take the appliance apart, because incorrect reassembly can cause electric shock.

When to Call Wilson & Myers

Start with the owner checks GE allows, in the order below. Then stop where GE stops. In my experience the first question is whether the drawer still opens, since GE treats a shut drawer and a silent motor separately.

Past those checks, the work is ours. That means the drive, the switches, the drawer hardware and getting the unit out of its cabinet. Our insured technicians handle GE trash compactor repair across the Denver Metro Area.

When you book online, give the model number from the label inside the drawer opening, or tell us the drawer will not open. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts. Timing depends on whether the supplier has the part.

  1. Give it a few minutes: after several cycles in a row, the thermal motor reset recloses by itself.
  2. Turn the knob gently to ON: it should rotate easily, and forcing it can break the knob and damage the switch.
  3. Close the drawer firmly: if trash fell behind it, take the knob off and wear gloves before reaching in.
  4. Lift and release the pedal: that lets a ram that stopped short complete its cycle.
  5. Stop if the ram stays down: GE’s own support ends there, and so should the DIY.
  • The drive: the 1/3 HP motor and its gears, the chain, the power screw and the power nut that carries the ram.
  • The switches: the start, main, return and door tilt switches, including the one a forced knob can damage.
  • The drawer: the foot pedal assembly, the latch, the drawer rollers and the frame slides.
  • The cabinet: freeing the countertop brackets or clips so the unit can roll out on its rear wheels.

GE Trash Compactor Repair FAQ

Where is the model number on a GE compactor?

Pull the drawer out and look at the front frame, at the upper left corner of the opening. GE’s Universal manual places the model and serial number label there.

GE’s parts site asks for the full model number, because its manufacturing code ties the unit to specific parts. On the current black model, that is UCG1500N0BB. The catalog’s shorter UCG1500NBB opens no parts list.

Is my GE compactor still under warranty?

GE’s written warranty runs one year from the original purchase date. It covers parts and labor to replace a part that fails from a defect in materials or workmanship. It passes to later owners too.

Inside that year, the repair belongs to GE’s warranty service. It needs proof of the purchase date. GE excludes improper installation, commercial use, resetting breakers and a compactor that is working as its manual describes.

How do I take a full bag out of a GE compactor?

Press the foot pedal to open the drawer, lift the bag’s top off the retainer buttons and pull up all four cuffs. Push the side door latch down and tilt the drawer side open. Then lift the bag out.

Keep it away from your body. GE warns that sharp objects may have pierced it. GE’s six inches of right-side clearance exist for this job.

How do I clear trash from behind the drawer?

Turn the knob to OFF and remove it first, as GE asks before any cleaning. Then put on protective gloves. Pull the drawer out until it stops, lift the front to clear the drawer stops, then grab both sides and pull it free.

Set the drawer on a protected surface, because GE says it can scratch a finished floor.

Does a GE compactor show error codes?

No, there is nothing to read. GE’s manuals, installation instructions and product pages for the Universal line list no error codes, no display and no test mode. The UCG1500 parts list shows switches, a knob, a motor and wiring harnesses, with no control board.

A diagnosis starts at the switches and the drive instead.
