On a current GE dishwasher, a flashing Start light means the door was opened or the cycle was interrupted. On its own, that is not a fault. Three things decide a real repair: which GE build you own, what the lights are doing and how old the machine is.
GE prints the model and serial numbers on a label on the tub wall, just inside the door. Read the model’s seventh character first. P is a plastic tub, H is GE’s hybrid with a stainless inner door, and S is stainless.
A P in first place, or a 7 in fourth, marks a GE Profile machine. No current GE-badge dishwasher is a drawer or countertop model, or lists Microban, UltraFresh or Twin Turbo Dry Boost. Our GE Profile and Café pages take those.
Every current P or H model dries with a Calrod heater. An S model with a 6 in fourth place dries with a fan that runs after the cycle. A 1 or 2 there means condensation drying. That drying type decides your door rule after the Clean light, so find your model in the table below.
| Model | Tub | Drying |
|---|---|---|
| GE top control dishwasher GDT550PYRFS | P, plastic | Calrod heater |
| GE dishwasher GDF535PGRWW | P, plastic | Calrod heater |
| GE 24″ stainless steel dishwasher GDF535PSRSS | P, plastic tub, stainless door | Calrod heater |
| GE dishwasher GDF450PSRSS | P, plastic, production ended July 2026 | Calrod heater |
| GE top control hybrid tub dishwasher GDT565HSYSS | H, hybrid | Calrod heater |
| GE top control hybrid tub dishwasher GDT585HYYFS | H, hybrid | Calrod heater |
| GE 24″ top control dishwasher GDT595HYYFS | H, hybrid | Calrod heater |
| GE top control dishwasher GDT670SYVFS | S, stainless | Fan |
| GE top control dishwasher GDT670SGVBB | S, stainless | Fan |
| GE 24″ portable dishwasher GPT225SSLSS | S, stainless | Condensation |
| GE 24″ portable dishwasher GPT225SGLBB | S, stainless | Condensation |
| GE 18″ portable dishwasher GPT145SSLSS | S, stainless | Condensation |
Every current GE owner’s manual prints one dishwasher warranty: one year from the original purchase, parts and labor. No longer term appears in them. The GE dishwasher warranty also passes to later owners of a home-use machine in the USA.
Inside that year, GE dishwasher repairs go through GE’s warranty service, and we will tell you so. Without a receipt, GE dates the warranty from manufacture. The serial’s first letter is the month and its second the year, so TS means October 2021, or 2009, as the letters repeat.
The warranty excludes installation faults, air gap cleaning and breaker resets. Freeze damage is out as well. If a GE dishwasher sits unheated through a Denver Metro winter, GE asks a technician to drain its water valve and inlet line.
For a GE dishwasher start light blinking after the door opened, GE’s fix is to press Start and close the door within 4 seconds. A flashing sequence means something else. On plastic and hybrid tub models, a GE dishwasher blinking Start light in a sequence is a Critical Fault.
On a GE dishwasher, all lights blinking fits two GE descriptions, though neither names the lights. With a tone on a plastic or hybrid tub, it can be Active Flood Protect. Otherwise GE suspects a power surge.
Check which light is flashing first. A GE dishwasher flashing orange light may be the door-front status light on most stainless fan models. GE describes it turning amber or blue during a wash, then white, not blinking. A GE dishwasher blinking orange there is worth mentioning when you book.
Why is my GE dishwasher beeping or flashing? Find what you see in the first column below, and GE’s step sits beside it.
| What you see | GE's reading | What GE says to do | Models |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start light flashing | Door opened or cycle interrupted | Press Start, close the door within 4 seconds | Every current build |
| Start light flashing in a sequence | Critical Fault | Call for service | Plastic and hybrid tubs |
| Blinking lights and a tone, wash stopped | Active Flood Protect stopped a possible overflow | No owner step on GE’s product page | Plastic and hybrid tubs |
| One beep every minute | Door left open during a cycle | Press Start and close the door | Every current build |
| 999 in the display | The control needs a reset | Hold Cycle Select and Start 5 seconds, then press any pad | GDT225 |
| Lock light on, pads ignored | Controls locked | Hold the lock pads 3 seconds; pads differ by build | Every current build |
The FTD error GE dishwasher owners look up comes from one general GE article that names no model. No current GE manual lists it, or H2O. We explain both in GE’s words only.
A GE dishwasher FTD error and an F56 are one entry: failure to drain. GE says to check the drain hose, air gap and disposer. It names no part for the GE dishwasher FTD code.
Whichever spelling you see, H2O or H20, a GE dishwasher H20 error means too little water arrived during a timed fill.
If the GE dishwasher H2O code shows only on 1-Hour Wash, GE says to schedule service. Other cycles can still run. Otherwise, check the inlet hose for kinks and fully open the shutoff that feeds the GE dishwasher inlet valve. If H2O persists with the machine level, GE recommends service.
A GE dishwasher not filling with water may have a stuck flood float, which GE lets owners lift out on GDF and GDT models. Condensation models drain for a minute first. A GE dishwasher not getting water may also be waiting on a drain, since poor draining can stop the fill.
The GE dishwasher water inlet valve hums for sixty to ninety seconds several times a cycle, and GE calls that normal.
GE dishwasher error codes in that article carry GE’s caution that not all codes are found on all models. Two more GE dishwasher codes there name a part.
Where is the GE dishwasher filter located? At the bottom of the tub, and on condensation models under the lower spray arm. How much water is normal depends on the filter type, set out below.
Past that line, a GE dishwasher not draining gets GE’s checks. They cover the filters and sump, then the drain hose, disposer and air gap. GE calls the air gap plumbing, not dishwasher.
GE’s installation sheets print one warning in capitals. The dishwasher will not drain if the disposer’s drain plug is left in. If that disposer is a GE, our GE garbage disposal page covers it.
GE ships a white corrugated GE dishwasher drain hose and says to use it. Old, worn hoses can kink or block. The sheets call for a high loop of 32 to 72 inches. If the tee or disposer inlet is under 18 inches, an air gap is required.
On plastic and hybrid tubs, holding Start for 3 seconds and closing the door drains the tub. That is how to drain a GE dishwasher mid-cycle. The same hold is how to turn off a GE dishwasher on those models.
A GE dishwasher drain pump appears by name only in the stainless fan models’ specs, which proves nothing about the rest. If your GE dishwasher won’t drain after GE’s checks, GE says service will be needed. Portables on a unicouple need service too.
Normal with an Ultra Fine filter, as long as it stays off the tub floor.
Normal only on models without an Ultra Fine filter.
A drain fault. GE’s checks above come first.
GE’s cycle will not begin until Start is pressed and the door is closed within 4 seconds. That is how to start GE dishwasher cycles. If your GE dishwasher won’t start after that, run GE’s checks below.
After a new install, GE sends a GE dishwasher not turning on back to the installer. Redoing that job is our dishwasher installation work. A GE dishwasher not starting after the checks below may need service, GE says.
GE’s door rule after the Clean light flips between builds, so a GE dishwasher not drying dishes may just need the right habit.
Adjust the water heater for 120°F to 140°F, as GE’s installation sheets say, and keep the rinse aid dispenser filled.
Every plastic and hybrid tub model lists a Calrod heater for drying, so a GE dishwasher heating element is ours to test there. GE warns the elements need 20 minutes to cool. Parts such as a heating element for GE dishwasher models are matched to the full rating plate number.
For drying causes every brand shares, our dishwasher not drying guide goes further.
Open the door as soon as the Clean light comes on.
Keep the door shut after Clean. The fan runs 90 more minutes, and opening the door ends it.
Choose Heated Dry or Dry Boost. The 1 Hour cycle does not dry.
For a GE dishwasher leaking from bottom of door, start with the gasket type. Some are black and mounted on the tub. Others are light gray, on the door, wrapping under it.
The light gray gasket’s ends leave a gap by design, and GE says that gap does not create a leak. Those models add corner baffles.
For a GE dishwasher leaking from bottom left corner, check the left baffle. Baffles shrink with age and hot water. On plastic tub models the water connection is on that side too.
A loose vent cap inside the top of the door and suds from dish soap also cause door leaks, GE says.
GE’s product pages call Active Flood Protect a water leak sensor, yet describe it stopping overflows. It watches the tub, not the floor. For water under the machine that plumbing does not explain, GE recommends service.
GE dishwasher troubleshooting in GE’s own order needs no tools. Note the model number and anything the display shows, since a reset can clear a code. Then work through the checks above.
What is ours starts where GE says service. That covers a Critical Fault sequence, H2O only on 1-Hour Wash, and a portable on its unicouple that will not drain. GE dishwasher flashing lights that return after GE’s resets are ours too.
Past those checks, how to fix GE dishwasher faults becomes a technician’s question. A GE dishwasher not working at that point is ours to diagnose.
In my experience the model number decides the visit, because the filter, the drying rule and the light readings all change with the build. It is the first thing our GE dishwasher repairman reads. Our GE dishwasher repair service starts there. The technicians are insured, and we source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts.
Check the purchase date before you book GE dishwasher repair near me, because the first year belongs to GE’s warranty service. After that, General Electric dishwasher repairs are ours.
For GE dishwasher service near me, book online and add the model number and what the lights are doing.
How to reset a GE dishwasher depends on what stopped. Here is how to reset GE dishwasher controls that stop responding: breaker or wall switch off for 30 seconds.
On a GDT225 showing 999, hold Cycle Select and Start for 5 seconds, then press any pad.
A GE dishwasher reset can clear a code, so write it down first. If a code survives 30 seconds, GE’s code article allows a minute or two without power before service.
At the bottom of the tub. On plastic, hybrid and stainless fan models, twist the Ultra-Fine filter counterclockwise and lift; GE says clean every other month.
Condensation models need the bottom rack and lower spray arm out first, and GE says monthly there.
For a GE dishwasher not cleaning dishes, our dishes not coming clean guide covers causes every brand shares.
If a GE dishwasher keeps beeping once a minute, the door was left open or unlatched mid-cycle. Press Start and close the door. Two beeps at the end are normal.
Here is how to turn off GE dishwasher end-of-cycle beeps. Press Heated Dry or Dry Boost 7 times in 5 seconds on plastic and hybrid tubs.
Stainless fan models take Dry Boost 5 times in 3 seconds. Condensation models take Wash Temp 5 times in 5 seconds.
GE’s owner documents give no test for a GE dishwasher control board. They give an order: reset the power, then see what returns.
A Critical Fault sequence on a plastic or hybrid tub names no part. So a GE dishwasher electronic control board is for our diagnosis to confirm, not a guess.
Yes, on their own pages. Our GE Monogram page covers the ZDT models, and other brands start at our dishwasher repair page.
Our GE kitchen appliances page covers the refrigerator and freezer, the ice maker and wine cooler, and the disposer and trash compactor.
Tell us the model number from the tub wall and what the lights or display are doing. The seventh character tells our technician which GE build it is.
