Whirlpool calls this machine a disposer, never a disposal, and that word is on the manual and the parts list. A Whirlpool food waste disposer is what sits under your sink, so this page starts from the model number.
The symptom list is on our garbage disposal repair page, beside the rest of our Whirlpool repair work.
Four families carry the whole Whirlpool disposer line, and the motor separates three of them. A Whirlpool GC1000 garbage disposal is the 1/3 HP entry machine. A Whirlpool GC2000 garbage disposal is the same body with a 1/2 HP motor. The GC5000 sits at 3/4 HP, and the WG1202 pair is the current 1/2 HP model.
Whirlpool’s dimension sheet gives the GC1000 and the GC2000 an identical envelope. Its 2018 manual puts the WG1202 in that same size class. So the current shelf equivalent of a GC2000 is a WG1202. All four run at 1,725 RPM on a continuous feed, so horsepower rather than speed separates them.
Whirlpool’s catalog listed three disposers when we rendered it. The GC2000 shop page now redirects to support, which makes that model service only. The GC5000 is the only one Whirlpool describes with sound insulation, a corrosion protection shield and a stainless grinding wheel.
| Family | Motor | Where Whirlpool has it now |
|---|---|---|
| GC1000 | 1/3 HP | Still listed in the live catalog. |
| GC2000 | 1/2 HP | Shop page redirects to support. Service only. |
| GC5000 | 3/4 HP | Product page still there, not in the listing. |
| WG1202 | 1/2 HP | Both models listed. The current 1/2 HP machine. |
WG1202PH and WG1202XH carry identical specifications except for one row. The PH lists a power cord included, at 6.3 amps and 120 volts. The XH lists no cord at all. Whirlpool’s feature list adds a plug and cord bullet to the PH only.
So P means it shipped with a plug and cord, and X means it did not. That answers the outlet or hardwired question from the label rather than from inside the cabinet.
We will not extend the rule to the GC pairs. The GC1000PE specification has no power cord row, and the GC2000 pair has no product page left to read. Whirlpool also contradicts itself: its manual says the disposer is intended to be direct wired, while the PH specification lists a cord.
On the front panel of the owner’s manual, under the support telephone lines, Whirlpool prints an insinkerator.com web address. It occurs once in the document, at the same type size as those lines.
A masthead alone proves very little, so we checked what sits behind it.
These units are built on InSinkErator’s platform, and the documentation and parts numbering are shared with InSinkErator. That is where the evidence stops. No manufacturer, regulator or filing states who builds them. The nameplate reads Whirlpool Corp, Benton Harbor, and every parts catalog files these models under Whirlpool.
The practical half matters more. The parts and the procedures for a Whirlpool disposer are InSinkErator’s parts and procedures. We service that badge in its own right, on our InSinkErator repair page.
Whirlpool keeps error code folders on its support site for washers, dryers and dishwashers. It keeps none for disposers. We walked the whole disposer branch, fifteen nodes and eleven articles, and found no error code page in it. Neither owner document contains the words error code or fault code.
These machines have no display and no diagnostic readout. The Whirlpool garbage disposal reset button is the only indicator, a red button on the underside. So a Whirlpool garbage disposal not working is diagnosed by what it does, never by what it shows.
The overload protector did its job, and the load that tripped it was transient.
The motor has not cooled, or the thermal element is finished.
The obstruction is not the fault. The start circuit is.
Whirlpool’s specification for every one of these models reads Jam Release: Wrench, and the wrench comes in the box. Its documents call that small offset jam key a wrenchette, and it does two jobs.
One hole is in the center of the underside, and that is the jam release. The other is in the mounting lug on the side. Turning the wrench there drops the machine out of its mount, which is a dismounting step rather than a repair.
If the wrenchette is lost, a hex key does the same job. Whirlpool’s newer article says often a quarter inch, then tells you to use the size specified for your model. We will not name one either.
One warranty note first. Whirlpool requires that warranty service goes through a designated service company. So check the status of a Whirlpool garbage disposal jammed inside its first year before opening it.
Whirlpool publishes one specification on every disposer sheet that explains this, and it is easy to read past: Starting Method, Centrifugal Switch.
A motor started that way has a separate start winding. A switch holds it energised while the rotor is still, then opens once the motor reaches speed. A stalled rotor never opens that switch, so current stays high and the overload cuts in. That is the hum then silence an owner describes.
The same symptom arrives when the switch itself fails. Burned contacts or a gummed mechanism leave the start winding dead, and the motor hums without breaking away. A jam and a failed start circuit sound identical from the sink.
The wrenchette separates them. If it turns freely and a Whirlpool garbage disposal humming persists after the reset holds, the obstruction is not the fault. The Whirlpool garbage disposal motor is a sealed assembly, and the start switch sits inside it.
Whirlpool publishes the starting method and the symptom without joining them up. That connection is how this kind of motor behaves, not a Whirlpool claim.
Whirlpool’s knowledge base holds eleven disposer articles and not one covers a leak. Every leak article its search returns belongs to a washer, a dishwasher or a refrigerator. So the map below comes from the manual’s own assembly sequence. The leak paths are the joints the manual creates, in the order it creates them.
One instruction in that manual explains much of what a technician finds. Plumber’s putty is permitted at the sink flange and forbidden at every other connection. Thread sealants and pipe dope are forbidden outright. The intuitive fix for a weeping joint is to smear something on it.
Note the word evenly on the three mounting screws. Screws pulled unevenly cock the backup flange and open one side of the gasket. That is why a Whirlpool garbage disposal leaking at the rim so often shows on one side only.
The mounting assembly stays with the sink when the machine comes off, so a fault there is not a disposer fault. The faults worth fixing sit outside the sealed body, and the ones inside sit where Whirlpool’s own literature never goes.
| Where the water shows | The joint behind it | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| At the sink rim | Putty seal, fiber gasket, backup flange, three screws | Installation and age, not the machine. The joint is remade. |
| Side, low down | Discharge gasket, flange, two bolts | A gasket, bolt tension, or a tube trimmed out of square. |
| Side, high up | The dishwasher inlet and its hose clamp | The clamp, or debris from the knockout plug. |
| From the body or base | The factory seal between the wet side and the motor | Not a joint anyone assembled, so not one to remake. |
Download the owner’s manual for a GC1000 from Whirlpool’s site and a two page safety and warranty sheet arrives. It has no operating instructions, no troubleshooting and no installation steps. Whirlpool lists four documents for a GC1000PE and they resolve to two assets. The installation instructions are that sheet relabeled, and the warranty file is page one of it.
The warranty inside then sends the reader to the troubleshooting section of a Use and Care Guide. Whirlpool publishes no such guide for any GC model. The document that does carry the jam, reset and cleaning procedures is the WG1202 manual, whose title block reads GC1000, WG1202, GC5000.
One more inconsistency sits in the same set. The Spanish and French warranty paragraphs name KitchenAid where the English names Whirlpool.
Cover is one year, parts and labor, on both document sets. There is no parts only tier and no separate motor term here. The WG1202 version adds installation as a condition, which matters on a machine a homeowner often fits.
| Models | Where the warranty lives | What is different |
|---|---|---|
| GC1000, GC2000, GC5000 | Its own sheet, 75899 REV A / W10296116 | Ten exclusions. Cover conditioned on operation and maintenance. |
| WG1202PH, WG1202XH | Inside the owner’s manual, 78776 Rev A / W1111225 | Seven exclusions. Cover conditioned on installation as well. |
Whirlpool raises this itself, in the only geography adjacent line in its whole disposer library. Grinding large amounts of some waste on a septic system, it says, may call for more frequent cleaning of the tank.
The onsite wastewater regulations used by Denver Metro counties put arithmetic behind that. In their fixture design tables, a kitchen sink with a garbage grinder carries the highest organic load of any residential fixture listed. It beats a laundry washer and a toilet, and uses the second least water on the list.
Two limits on that. Those tables compare fixtures rather than set an allowance for a house. Much of the Denver Metro Area is on sewer, where none of it applies.
Whirlpool’s own remedy is more frequent tank cleaning, not a different repair.
The manual puts observing all governing codes and ordinances on the owner.
Damage from installation outside local electrical and plumbing codes is excluded.
Two jobs on this machine belong to the owner and take a minute each. The wrenchette in the center hole clears a jam. The red button underneath resets the overload once the motor has cooled. A page that says so earns the calls that are genuinely ours.
In my experience the question worth asking first is where the water is showing. A rim leak and a body leak look the same from a kitchen floor and mean different things.
Wilson & Myers handles Whirlpool garbage disposal repair across the Denver Metro Area with insured technicians. A search for Whirlpool garbage disposal repair near me hands you a list. The thing worth asking any name on it is which model number they want first. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts, and Whirlpool garbage disposal parts are identified against the model number.
Replacement and the drain and electrical connections sit on our garbage disposal installation page. The machine Whirlpool files beside this one is our trash compactor repair page, and the rest sits under appliance repair. To book, use our contact page; our pricing page explains how a visit is charged. Whirlpool kitchen appliance repair carries the dishwasher it drains into, and the rest of the kitchen.
The reset is a red button on the underside. Switch the disposer off, give the motor three to five minutes to cool, then press the button lightly.
If it will not stay in, the motor has not cooled or the thermal element is finished. If it holds and the machine still hums, the reset was never the fault.
There is no code to read here, so the answer comes from what it does. Silence points upstream, at a wall switch, a breaker, an outlet or a loose hardwired connection.
A hum points at the grinding chamber or the start circuit. Whirlpool’s warranty excludes house wiring by name, though somebody still has to find it.
Turn off the power and the cold water first. Put the wrenchette into the center hole underneath and work it back and forth until it turns one full revolution.
Lift the object out with long handled tongs, let the motor cool, then press the reset. If the wrench will not move at all, stop there.
No. We walked Whirlpool’s whole disposer support branch and found no error code page, while its washers, dryers and dishwashers each have one.
These units have no display and no diagnostic readout. The reset button and the wrenchette are the only two indicators on the machine.
Whirlpool publishes no figure. The closest published one is the NAHB and Bank of America Study of Life Expectancy of Home Components, dated February 2007. It gives food waste disposers twelve years, and it is nearly twenty years old.
What dates a particular unit better is its family. Whirlpool has retired the GC2000 far enough that its shop page now redirects to support.
Nobody publishes an answer, and we are not going to invent one. What is documented is the platform. The manual prints an InSinkErator web address in its masthead. The jam procedure matches word for word, and the replacement parts carry InSinkErator part numbers.
InSinkErator describes itself as a wholly owned subsidiary of Whirlpool Corporation. The manual carrying that shared text is from 2018, four years before the acquisition completed.
Tell us the model number from the label under the sink and where the water shows up when you book. The leak location names the part before anyone arrives.
