Whirlpool publishes three different minimum room temperatures for its freezers. None of them is the 55 F floor it publishes for its refrigerators. A Garage Ready chest cabinet is rated to 0 F, and no upright is rated below 40 F. In a Denver garage, that difference decides which machine gets through the winter.
All eight chest cabinets Whirlpool sells now defrost by hand. All five uprights defrost themselves. There is no exception in the current line.
It changes what frost means. Frost in a Whirlpool chest freezer is maintenance, and Whirlpool asks for a defrost at about 1/4 inch of build up. Frost in a Whirlpool upright freezer is a symptom, because that machine is meant to be removing it.
The chest cabinet drains through a rubber stopper, pulled out by hand over a pan or a hose. The Whirlpool freezer drain plug is a manual drain, not a refrigerator’s defrost drain. There is no defrost heater, thermostat or timer behind it.
The chest cabinets carry a flammable refrigerant label, and the tubing is bonded into the wall. So no hair dryer, no heater, no ice pick and no knife.
The line is thirteen machines, eight chest and five upright, from a 5 cu ft Whirlpool chest freezer to a 22 cu ft convertible. On the uprights the badge and the measurement differ. A 15 cu ft Whirlpool upright freezer and a 16 cu ft sticker can be one cabinet, measured at 15.68. The largest is a Whirlpool 20 cu ft upright freezer.
| Feature | Chest cabinets | Upright cabinets |
|---|---|---|
| Defrost | Manual, with a drain and stopper | Automatic, frost free |
| Garage Ready | Listed on all eight | Listed on none |
| Lid or door lock | On the four convertibles | On one model |
| Ice maker compatible | On none | On two of five |
Zero, 32 and 40 are all Whirlpool numbers, and all three are current. The 0 F to 110 F band is the Garage Ready feature, written on all eight chest models, in Freezer Mode. The placement guide says 32 F. Eleven troubleshooting articles and the upright manuals say the room must not fall below 40 F.
Set those against Denver. On thirty year normals for Denver International, no month has an average daily low below 0 F. The coldest monthly average low is 18.4 F, in December. Seven of the twelve months average below 40 F.
So a Garage Ready chest freezer in a Denver garage sits inside its published band every month of a normal year. An upright sits below its own 40 F floor for seven months of twelve.
The counterweight belongs here too. That station recorded 40 nights below 0 F in six and a half years, and a low of minus 24 F. These are outdoor readings, and an attached garage lags them.
The chest cabinets ship with a 1.6 foot power cord, and Whirlpool asks for a dedicated grounded outlet with no extension cord. In a garage that usually means the outlet moves, not the freezer.
| Published floor | Where Whirlpool prints it | Which machines |
|---|---|---|
| 0 F to 110 F | Product data, in Freezer Mode only | Eight chest models, no upright |
| 32 F to 110 F | The placement guide | Chest and upright |
| 40 F to 110 F | Eleven troubleshooting articles, and the upright manuals | Chest and upright |
| Floor | Months below it |
|---|---|
| 55 F, the refrigerator floor | 10 of 12 |
| 40 F, the freezer troubleshooting floor | 7 of 12 |
| 32 F, the placement guide | 5 of 12 |
| 0 F, Garage Ready in Freezer Mode | 0 of 12 |
Four of the chest cabinets convert to refrigerators, and the mode is not a separate switch. Levels 1 and 2 are the fridge range, and levels 3 through 7 are the freezer range. A dial knocked down two clicks thaws everything inside, with no fault, no code and no part to replace.
Whirlpool names it in its own troubleshooting, which says to try a cooler level when the appliance is too warm. The product data agrees: convertibles publish two temperature bands, the plain chest models one.
The same dial has a Denver consequence. The 0 F Garage Ready rating is written for Freezer Mode, and a convertible run as a refrigerator publishes 35 F to 43 F. An unheated garage here leaves that band behind in October.
Refrigerator mode. Everything frozen thaws, and nothing is broken.
Freezer mode. The mid setting is built to hold at or near 0 F.
We searched all 123 of Whirlpool’s non-empty freezer articles for error code, fault code and diagnostic mode. Zero hits. The freezer branch has no control concerns section at all, unlike the French door refrigerators, which publish fourteen code pages.
So any freezer code list you find was written by somebody else. The refrigerator codes are real, and they belong to refrigerators. Carried onto a chest freezer they invent a fault the machine cannot report.
What Whirlpool publishes instead is indicator lights with stated meanings, and one threshold. The alarm sounds when the cabinet reaches 10 F or more above your setting. That is the machine telling you how far the load drifted.
| Indicator | What Whirlpool publishes | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Green, running | The compressor is working | Power and compressor are fine, so look at sealing and load |
| Red, on the convertibles | The temperature is not low enough | The cabinet is warm, whatever the dial reads |
| Temperature alarm | Sounds at 10 F or more above your setting | How far the load has drifted |
| The alarm switch | Right tests it, left arms it, center turns it off | An alarm that never sounded may have been off |
Eighteen of Whirlpool’s freezer articles name the gasket, 53 times between them. The lock appears in 19 articles, 113 times. Evaporator fan, thermistor, defrost thermostat, start relay and control board appear zero times across all 185 pages.
That is where the routine faults sit, and where Whirlpool’s help stops. A hard Whirlpool freezer door gasket, a lid that no longer seats and a cabinet out of level all present as frost.
The lock is the one most owners miss. It is spring loaded, so the key cannot be left in it, and frost inside holds the lid open by a fraction. What gets reported is frost build up, or a Whirlpool chest freezer not freezing, rather than a lock fault.
Whirlpool’s own store is no help. Its whole freezer accessory list is two bottles of touch up paint and one ice bin. Its parts search returns nothing for gasket, thermostat or compressor. So hunting there for Whirlpool freezer parts, Whirlpool freezer shelves, a Whirlpool freezer thermostat or a Whirlpool chest freezer basket ends quickly.
Whirlpool publishes a duty cycle for its freezers, which most manufacturers never do. At normal room temperature the motor runs about 40 to 80 percent of the time, and more in a hot garage. So a Whirlpool freezer running for long stretches is usually reporting the room, not a fault.
The set point is 0 F, and the mid dial setting is built to hold it. From a cold start the compressor runs continuously for six to eight hours.
Loading moves the same needle. Whirlpool’s limit is 2 to 3 pounds of unfrozen food per cubic foot. It wants the cabinet 75 to 80 percent full.
Running and still warm is the call worth making. In a chest cabinet the cold comes from tubing bonded into the walls, with no fan. That points at the sealed system or the compressor start rather than at airflow. A Whirlpool upright freezer not cooling has a fan and a defrost circuit too, so the same symptom opens wider.
Whirlpool’s published run time at normal room temperature.
Continuous running from a cold start, before it should begin cycling.
The wait Whirlpool asks for between one temperature adjustment and the next.
Whirlpool draws its line at 24 hours, whether the power failed or the machine did. Under 24 hours, keep the lid shut and leave the food alone. Past 24 hours, move it to a frozen food locker, or eat or can what will not keep.
The refreezing test is the useful part. A package that still holds ice crystals can be refrozen, though quality and flavor take a hit. A package in poor condition goes out.
Once power is back, Whirlpool asks for 30 minutes unplugged before restarting, so the refrigeration system can equalize.
Whirlpool’s warranty excludes incidental and consequential damages, and names loss of food as its example. The machine can be covered. The contents are not.
Whirlpool serves all five freezer models we checked with warranty document W11655298A. Its refrigerators run on a different number. The freezer document gives one year from delivery, parts and labor, and that is the whole term.
The extended coverage people remember from refrigerator shopping sits in the same document. Years two through five cover the sealed refrigeration system, and the table names exactly two products. They are the French Door Bottom Mount and the Side by Side refrigerator. A chest freezer is neither, and nor is an upright or the SideKicks All-Freezer.
That matters because a standalone freezer has a sealed system of its own. Compressor, evaporator, condenser and connecting tubing are all in there. On the document as published, they carry one year.
Exclusion 6 sets out what is not covered: damage caused by a servicer outside Whirlpool’s network, or by non-genuine and third party parts. The clause immediately after it says that using either will not void the warranty. That is W11655298A, matched in its French and Spanish pages.
Parts and labor, from the date of delivery.
Sealed system coverage, named for two refrigerator configurations and no freezer.
Whirlpool files its 18 cu ft SideKicks All-Freezer under freezers, upright, and the matching All-Refrigerator under refrigerators, side by side. A trim kit, SKT60M, joins the two cabinets so they read as one appliance.
They are not one appliance. Two model numbers, two sealed systems, two warranties and, when both quit, two service calls. An owner reporting a Whirlpool side by side that will not freeze may mean the freezer column. That column shares nothing with the refrigerator beside it but a strip of steel.
The All-Freezer column belongs on this page. The refrigerator column, and the freezer compartment inside any combination cabinet, sit with refrigerator repair.
Most of what Whirlpool tells an owner to check needs no tools and ten minutes. Work down the list below before booking anything.
Ours starts where Whirlpool’s stops. Every ladder it publishes ends at schedule service, without naming a part. Anything behind an upright’s rear panel is ours, and so is anything needing a meter.
Refrigerant work sits in a class of its own. Our technicians are EPA-608 certified, the federal credential covering refrigerant handling, and no honest sealed system diagnosis happens without it. A Whirlpool freezer not working at all is a different call, and it starts at the outlet.
In my experience the most useful thing an owner tells us is how long the cabinet has been warm. The alarm answers that, and the food answers it when the alarm was off.
Wilson & Myers handles Whirlpool freezer repair across Denver Metro Area with insured technicians. Searches for Whirlpool freezer repair near me end at the same short list, from Denver out to Aurora and Arvada. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts, and the number comes after the diagnosis. Book a visit when the list runs out.
The refrigerators and ice machines beside it sit under Whirlpool kitchen appliance repair.
Whirlpool’s ladder branches on one question first, whether the lid or door is sealing. Test the gasket with a bill, clear frost from the lock, and check the cabinet is level.
If it seals and the unit runs, check the dial on a convertible, where levels 1 and 2 are refrigerator mode. Past that, a Whirlpool chest freezer not freezing while it runs is a sealed system or compressor start question.
Whirlpool publishes one number for both cabinet shapes, 0 F, and says the mid dial setting is built to hold it. One control style calls that setting 2 and another calls it 4, so read the panel rather than the number.
Allow 24 hours after a change before judging it.
There is no reset procedure, because nothing is stored to clear. Whirlpool publishes no fault codes for any standalone freezer.
Two things do exist. Some models need the power button held for three seconds after an outage. After a power cut, Whirlpool asks for 30 minutes unplugged before restarting. A fault surviving both is a service call.
A pulsating or high pitched sound from the compressor as it adjusts is normal, and so is gurgling, which is refrigerant moving through the tubing. Both are Whirlpool’s own descriptions.
Be careful with the rest. Nine of the ten articles filed under upright freezer noise are refrigerator copy, describing a defrost heater and a water line. A manual defrost chest freezer has neither, so a Whirlpool freezer making noise is rarely explained there.
A chest model can, on Whirlpool’s own numbers. Garage Ready is rated 0 F to 110 F in Freezer Mode, and no Denver month averages a daily low below 0 F. Roughly six nights a year go under it.
An upright is a different answer. Garage Ready is listed on none of the five, and their manuals put the floor at 40 F, which seven Denver months average below.
Two do, both of them uprights, and no chest freezer takes one. The kit needs a water line, and Whirlpool specifies 1/4 inch soft copper or PEX tubing.
Ice production has its own causes, and we cover those in why a Whirlpool ice maker stops.
Tell us whether it is a chest or an upright when you book, and where it stands. A garage through a Denver winter changes the diagnosis.
