Whirlpool still writes the owner’s manuals for its compactors and still catalogs the bags they take. What it is not doing is shipping the machines. So an owner with a working unit has a repair question, not a replacement one. This page is about keeping yours running, alongside the rest of our Whirlpool repair work.
Whirlpool’s compactor category is still linked from its own kitchen navigation, beside dishwashers and disposers. It lists three machines, one for each architecture the brand built. Both owner’s manuals and the warranty carry 2023 dates, which is current paperwork for an appliance most people assume was abandoned.
What matters to an owner is the supply position. Not one of the three can be ordered from Whirlpool today, and no other category on its site behaves that way. Disposers, dishwashers, hoods and refrigerators all carry units that can still be ordered.
The honest reading is not that the machine is obsolete. It is that a like for like swap is not the simple route it would be for a dishwasher.
Three compactors, one for each architecture it built.
Both owner’s manuals and the warranty were revised in 2023.
Diagnosis runs off current documents, not archived ones.
The trailing letter on the model plate is a color code, not a different machine. Nine model numbers cover three architectures, and that suffix separates a Whirlpool stainless trash compactor from a black or a white one.
Every one of them is a Whirlpool 15 inch trash compactor on the same cabinet footprint. What changes is how the machine starts and where the controls sit. The convertible ships as a Whirlpool freestanding trash compactor, and a Whirlpool built in trash compactor sits under the counter from the start. Read the whole model number first.
| Architecture | How it starts | What else is different |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated full door, TU950QPX | A foot actuated Start button pressed with your toe | A Key-knob and a Compress cycle switch, and no console at all. |
| Convertible console, GC900QPP | ON, OFF and START buttons on a console | Ships freestanding, converts to undercounter with a kit, Key-knob behind the drawer. |
| Undercounter console, GX900QPP | The Clean Touch console | Built in from the start, sharing the console manual with the convertible. |
Whirlpool publishes no fault codes for compactors, and its own help center has no branch for them. There is no readout, no blinking sequence and nothing to photograph and search.
Everything wrong with one of these machines shows up as something you can see, hear or feel at the drawer. The table below is the scan we run first.
| What you notice | What Whirlpool's own documents point at | Owner or technician |
|---|---|---|
| Will not start | Key-knob off or removed, drawer not latched, debris at the monitor switch, or a switched outlet | Usually the owner |
| Will not turn off | The same monitor switch un-made mid cycle, or a bent lever behind the Start switch | Owner first, then us |
| Drawer will not open | A half cycle holding the load compressed, or a ram that never retracted | Owner first, then us |
| Nothing being crushed | A drawer under half full, and a ram that stops seven inches short by design | Owner |
| Noisy in use | The steel chain and sprocket drive, breaking glass, or the charcoal filter fan | Usually normal |
Nothing gets crushed until the drawer is more than half full. Whirlpool says so plainly and puts it at the top of its own troubleshooting table, because it is the complaint it hears most. A Whirlpool trash compactor not compacting is nearly always a drawer that has not reached that line.
The compacting ram then stops seven inches above the bottom of the drawer, by design, on every model in the family. Behind it is a steel chain running on steel sprockets. Whirlpool documents some noise from that drive as normal, and a chain that has stretched with age gets louder long before it fails.
One instruction outranks the rest. Never force a Whirlpool trash compactor ram by hand, because the drive mechanism takes the damage.
A key-knob turned to off stops a compactor as completely as a failed motor would. Whirlpool fits a removable key so an adult can lock the machine. On console models the Whirlpool trash compactor key switch sits behind the drawer, where nobody thinks to look.
The second is the drawer monitor switch, where one fault produces two opposite symptoms. If the drawer is not fully closed and latched, the switch is never made and the machine will not start. If it un-makes during a cycle, the ram returns and the machine will not stop. Debris in the drawer area causes both, which is how one piece of rubbish looks like two failures.
The third control locks on purpose. A Whirlpool trash compactor stuck with its drawer shut is usually running Solid Pack, Compress, Extra Pac or PowerPack. That is a half cycle which holds the load compressed.
Every machine in this family takes the same 15 inch consumable, and the fit is not a formality. Whirlpool lists its trash compactor bags in 15, 60 and 180 packs, and names every one of them as an odour remover bag. It tells owners to use nothing else. They are 2.5 mil plastic with a pleated bottom that stops them slipping.
Whirlpool says that pleated bottom fits all 15 inch compactor brands, and its current bag caddy part supersedes an old General Electric number. What does not carry across is the 18 inch bag, which belongs to a larger machine.
The ram will tear a bag that was left loose. A torn bag leaves debris in the drawer area, and that debris un-makes the drawer monitor switch. A consumable sits upstream of the two faults that look electrical.
Three separate things fight odour on this platform, and only one of them is part of the machine. The first is the bag, because every current 15 inch pack Whirlpool lists is an odour remover bag. The main defense is a consumable you replace rather than a system anyone repairs.
The second is a charcoal air filter behind a fan, on the models that have one. That fan runs while the compactor is idle, so a humming machine that is not compacting anything is usually the filter doing its job. An Air Filter switch turns it off.
Whirlpool documents no gasket and no seal anywhere on this platform, so a lingering smell is not a seal replacement job. The third layer is what goes in. Raw meat, fish, citrus rinds and hygiene items are all on Whirlpool’s own do not compact list.
Whirlpool’s compactor warranty is the shared Major Appliance document rather than a compactor specific one. Cover is one year from delivery, parts and labor included, with no second tier behind it. The years two to five section lists refrigerator sealed systems only, so an owner reading it reasonably thinks it applies and it does not.
Two exclusions bite harder here than on most appliances. Consumable parts are out, which covers the bags and the charcoal air filter. Work that means removing cabinetry, a countertop or a decorative panel to reach the appliance is also excluded, and that describes most undercounter installs.
One clause is worth knowing before you call anyone. Whirlpool says that using a service provider it has not appointed does not void the warranty, although damage caused by that work is not covered.
Whirlpool trash compactor parts fall into two groups. The consumables are cataloged: bags in three pack sizes, a charcoal air filter and a bag carrier. A search for a Whirlpool trash compactor bag assembly is usually after that carrier. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts.
Refrigerator sealed systems only, so it cannot reach a compactor.
Bags and the charcoal air filter are excluded as consumable parts.
Whirlpool’s compactor documentation carries no altitude instruction, no water specification and no temperature rating. We went looking and there is nothing there. This is a 115 volt mechanical appliance in a conditioned kitchen, and it behaves the same at any elevation. We will not invent a local angle for it.
What is local is the cabinet it was fitted into. The machine needs a 15 1/4 inch opening as a minimum, has to sit centered and level, and must be held by its retaining brackets. It also wants six inches of clearance on the right, which exists so the bags can come out.
In the older Denver Metro kitchens we work in, those openings are often tight or slightly out of square. That is where the rubbing, the walking during a cycle and the drawer sitting off center come from. None of it is a fault inside the machine.
15 1/4 inches wide as a minimum, with the machine centered in it.
Front leveling legs adjusted, rear rollers set, retaining brackets fitted.
Most compactor calls sort into three piles. Some are a key, a latch or a bag fitted the wrong way round. Some belong to the cabinet rather than the appliance. The rest are ours.
In my experience the fastest question is whether the drawer has been more than half full lately. That one answer separates a broken machine from a working one, and the model number off the plate settles how the drawer is released.
Our technicians are insured, and Whirlpool trash compactor service runs across the Denver Metro Area as part of our appliance repair work. A search for Whirlpool trash compactor repair near me returns a long list. The question worth asking is whether anyone on it has read the manual for your architecture.
We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts, and timing depends on whether the supplier has the part.
Symptoms shared by every make of compactor sit on our trash compactor repair page. The machine Whirlpool files beside this one has its own garbage disposal repair page. The rest of the kitchen starts at dishwasher repair and the brands index. To book, use our contact page, and our pricing page explains how a visit is charged.
Whirlpool kitchen appliance repair holds the rest of the kitchen, dishwasher and disposal included.
Start with the key-knob, because a machine with the key turned off or removed behaves exactly like a dead one. On console models it sits behind the drawer.
Then close and latch the drawer fully. Three of the seven checks Whirlpool lists for a compactor that will not run come back to the drawer monitor switch. Debris is the usual reason it is not made.
When a Whirlpool trash compactor door won’t open, look at the cycle before the mechanism. Solid Pack, Compress, Extra Pac and PowerPack all run a half cycle that locks the drawer to keep the trash compressed.
The release differs by machine. A pedal start unit frees on the foot actuated Start button, and a key-knob unit frees on the Off or Unlocked button. A Whirlpool trash compactor drawer stuck after that has a ram which never retracted, so stop pulling.
Release the drawer side latch and tilt the drawer to the right, which takes the pressure off the bag. Lift the four cuffs, close it with a twist tie, and expect real weight.
A new bag goes in with the latch locked and the drawer clean. Pull the four pre-punched holes over the retainer buttons, then press it into the bottom, the sides and the corners. The ram tears bags that were left loose.
Turn the Key-knob off and remove it first, which is Whirlpool’s own instruction before any cleaning. Wear gloves, because broken glass is the hazard the manual keeps returning to.
The owner scope Whirlpool grants is short: inside the drawer, inside the cabinet, the ram cover and the exterior. Anything past that list it sends to a service visit instead.
Some of it is not. Whirlpool documents the steel chain and sprocket drive as a source of normal running noise, and breaking glass is expected rather than alarming.
A hum from a machine that is not compacting is usually the charcoal filter fan, which runs while the unit is idle. Noise that has changed, or that comes with a drawer sitting off center, is worth a look.
Whirlpool still catalogs the consumables for these machines: bags in three pack sizes, a charcoal air filter and a bag carrier.
We identify a part against your model number before ordering anything, and timing depends on whether the supplier has it.
Tell us the model number and whether the key knob turns and the drawer closes fully when you book. Those two switches are the first things we check.
