Whirlpool publishes four different drain run limits for the same undercounter ice machine. Its own manual forbids a saddle valve that its own store sells inside an ice maker kit. Most of what goes wrong with these machines was decided the day they were plumbed in.
Whirlpool’s ice maker category returns five results, and three of them are kits. The machines are WUI95X15HZ, with a drain pump built into the cabinet, and WUI75X15HB, which drains by gravity.
Almost nothing else separates them. Clear ice and the self cleaning cycle are on both, and both hold a 25 lb bin and weigh 96.5 lb. Whirlpool files the pair under one item number, in a family it calls Cold Plate Single.
The countertop unit sold under the Whirlpool name is not built by Whirlpool. Its own page says those ice makers are manufactured under license by Galanz. It needs no water line and no drain, and its warranty runs 18 months rather than the major appliance one.
A refrigerator’s built in module is different again, and its fault tree lives in why a Whirlpool ice maker stops.
| Specification | WUI95X15HZ | WUI75X15HB |
|---|---|---|
| Drain | Pump included | Gravity, no pump |
| Interior light | Incandescent | LED |
| Clear Ice Technology | Yes | Yes |
| Self cleaning cycle | Yes | Yes |
| Bin capacity | 25 lb | 25 lb |
Whirlpool’s own documents do not agree on how far drain water may travel. The Owner’s Manual gives a maximum run of 100 ft with a maximum rise of 10 ft. One machine’s feature copy repeats the 100 ft, and the other machine’s says 10 ft.
The manual then prints a curve nobody else prints. For every 1 ft of rise, subtract 10 ft of allowable run. Set that against the manual’s own 10 ft rise and the allowance reaches zero. Either the curve or the limit is wrong, and Whirlpool has not said which.
This matters because a drain problem does not look like one. Whirlpool’s own articles say a run past the limit can cause low ice, no ice, or no power and intermittent power. A machine that looks dead can be a hose that is too long.
| Published limit | Where Whirlpool prints it |
|---|---|
| 100 ft run, 10 ft rise | The Owner’s Manual |
| 100 ft | Feature copy for the pump model |
| 10 ft | Feature copy for the gravity model |
| 30 ft run, 9 ft rise | Four articles on its support site |
| 10 ft of head | The drain pump kit’s own description |
A floor drain directly below the cabinet is what gravity draining needs. Whirlpool specifies a 5/8 inch minimum inside diameter and a 1 inch drop for every 48 inches of run. It wants no low point where water can settle, and a 1 inch air gap kept clear at the standpipe.
No floor drain means a pump. WUI95X15HZ has one inside. On WUI75X15HB the pump is an accessory, and it costs more than the entire price difference between the two machines. Adding it later lands above the price of the machine that already has one.
The pump also rules out a common water treatment. Whirlpool does not recommend reverse osmosis on a machine with a drain pump, and restricts it to gravity drain systems.
A floor drain below the cabinet, a 5/8 inch line, and a fall of 1 inch per 48 inches.
Required where there is no floor drain, built into one machine and an accessory on the other.
Gravity drain systems only, and whole house capacity rather than a faucet unit.
Two Whirlpool documents print the same prohibition word for word. The Owner’s Manual and the Installation Instructions both say not to use a piercing type or 3/16 inch saddle valve. Both then call for a home supply line of at least 1/2 inch and a quarter turn shut off. From there it is 1/4 inch soft copper to the machine.
Whirlpool’s own store sells kit 8003RP, a refrigerator ice maker installation kit. Its description lists 15 ft of copper tubing, one saddle valve, tape and a connector. The compliant kit from the same store carries PEX tubing and no saddle valve.
The tubing is a second disagreement. Product data for both machines lists a 1/4 inch PEX inlet, while the manual and the installation book call for soft copper. Whirlpool also warns that any other cold water supply line can make the ice taste odd.
The machine wants 30 to 120 psi, and Whirlpool recommends 50. The Whirlpool ice maker water inlet valve is where you hear the difference, because above 60 psi the fill turns audible.
Water hardness decides the interval, and Whirlpool pegs it to 15 to 20 grains per gallon. The Owner’s Manual says that band may need cleaning as often as every nine months. Its own support site gives the identical band and says six months.
Minerals rejected during freezing build a hard deposit in the water system. Whirlpool says that deposit can stop the ice block sliding off the freezer plate onto the cutting grid. Scale shows up at harvest, not at production.
The cycle itself is prescriptive: ice out, drain cap off, pan drained, cap refitted securely, then cleaner and water into the pan. The manual repeats one warning four separate times. A loose drain cap empties the pan and leaves thin ice or none.
The condenser has the same problem in miniature. One article says clean it every time you run a cleaning cycle, and the maintenance schedule says yearly.
| Job | Owner's Manual | Whirlpool support site |
|---|---|---|
| System clean at 15 to 20 grains per gallon | Every 9 months | Every 6 months |
| Cleaning cycle length | About 70 minutes | About 70 to 90 minutes |
| Water filter | 9 months or 2000 gallons | Every 3 to 9 months |
Three of the six articles Whirlpool tags to its own brand across this product branch are leak articles. A Whirlpool ice maker leaking water gets one of them for each place the water shows up.
Two of the three checks are free. A leak from behind is usually a drain hose that is not far enough into the drain pipe. A leak at the filter is usually the filter itself. Missing O rings there also give thin cubes or low ice production.
| Where the water appears | Whirlpool's first check |
|---|---|
| Bottom front | The supply line, and whether it is copper or Whirlpool’s own |
| From behind | Drain hose insertion, about 6 inches into the drain pipe |
| Filter area | Cracks in the filter, and whether the O rings are in place |
There is nothing alphanumeric to read off this machine, and that is measured rather than assumed. Across all 111 articles Whirlpool publishes for its ice makers, a search for code like strings returns nothing.
What the panel gives instead is a set of lights. The filter light is a counter rather than a sensor, tripping at nine months or 2000 gallons, whichever comes first.
Several complaints are the machine doing its job. Above 90 F Whirlpool says production drops and the cubes clump together. The bin is not refrigerated, so ice melts in it. The first batch takes 24 hours, the first two batches are thrown away, and a five minute rinse runs first.
Fast Ice is on by default at first power up and switches itself off after 24 hours, so day two is slower than day one.
A Whirlpool ice maker making noise is usually making one Whirlpool has already named. Buzzing is the fill valve, gurgling is refrigerant, and a thud is the sheet landing on the grid. A loud fill is the exception, tied to supply pressure over 60 psi.
| Indicator | Whirlpool's stated meaning |
|---|---|
| Service light on | Switch off and on, and call for service if it lights again |
| Clean blinking | A cycle running, or one interrupted and waiting to resume |
| Replace Filter | Time to replace, and it flashes when the filter is not locked in |
| Door ajar alarm | The door has been open five minutes, repeating every two |
Both machines are served by the same warranty document, and it is short. Coverage is one year from the date of delivery, parts and labor included. There is no second tier for this product.
The years two through five sealed system cover does exist in that document. It names French Door Bottom Mount refrigerators and Side by Side refrigerators, and nothing else. An undercounter ice machine has a sealed system, with a compressor, an evaporator and a condenser. It is not on that list.
Both of those are refrigerator configurations. A Whirlpool French Door refrigerator ice maker or a Whirlpool side by side ice maker sits inside one of them. The longer cover there is for the refrigerator itself.
Installation that does not follow the installation instructions is excluded, which puts the drain fall and the saddle valve on the owner’s side. So is removal of built in cabinetry that blocks service, and a 96.5 lb machine fitted flush into an island is that case exactly.
Whirlpool’s own document also says that using a service provider outside its network, or a part that is not genuine, will not void the warranty.
There is no metro hardness figure to quote, because Denver Water publishes none. Its water quality page calls the southern collection system moderately hard and the northern system somewhat soft. It adds that the water is slightly harder in winter, and that Denver’s water tends to form scale over two to five years.
Set that against Whirlpool’s own 15 to 20 grains per gallon and there is nothing to compare. The metro is served by many utilities and some homes are on wells. The honest number for an address comes from that utility’s own report.
Where the machine sits matters as much as what runs through it. Whirlpool asks for a room between 55 F and 110 F, with best results between 70 F and 90 F. An unheated garage spends months of a Denver winter below that floor, and a covered outdoor kitchen can pass the ceiling in July.
Ice forming in the supply line raises pressure and can damage the machine or the house. Freeze damage is not covered by the warranty, and a garage line along an outside wall is where that starts.
Most of what Whirlpool asks an owner to check needs no tools. Work down the list below before booking anything, because most of it is maintenance rather than parts.
Ours begins where that list ends. Sealed system work, a pump that will not clear its line, and any verdict that needs a meter. Our technicians are EPA-608 certified, the federal credential covering refrigerant handling.
In my experience the fastest question on these machines is where the drain water goes. An owner who can answer floor drain, standpipe or pump has already halved the visit.
Wilson & Myers handles Whirlpool ice maker repair across Denver Metro Area with insured technicians. A search for Whirlpool ice maker repair near me, or for Whirlpool ice maker service near me, ends at the same short list here. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts, and Whirlpool ice maker parts are ordered against the model and serial plate.
The number comes after the diagnosis, and how we price a visit is published. Book a visit when the list runs out. Whirlpool kitchen appliance repair holds the refrigerator, freezer and wine cabinet pages.
Whirlpool publishes no 24 hour production figure for either machine. The 25 lb everyone quotes is bin storage, not output.
Accessory copy calls them 50 lb ice makers, which labels the accessory family rather than rating these two. Output also moves with the room, because warmer air means less ice.
No reset procedure exists on the undercounter machine, because there is no stored code to clear. Whirlpool’s instruction for the service light is to switch off and back on, and book service if it returns.
Owners searching how to reset a Whirlpool ice maker usually mean the refrigerator module. That sequence lives in why a Whirlpool ice maker stops.
One button does it, and then the machine takes its time. A rinse cycle runs about five minutes before any ice is made.
Allow 24 hours for the first batch, and throw the first two away. Fast Ice runs by default for the first 24 hours, so day one is not the settled rate.
Owners asking how to replace a Whirlpool ice maker usually mean one of two jobs. Swapping the standalone machine is plumbing work: a drain with a specified fall, an air gap, a supply line and a shut off.
The other job is a refrigerator module in a different cabinet. Either way Whirlpool excludes installation that does not follow its own instructions, so a Whirlpool ice maker replacement is worth doing to the book.
Scale on the freezing plate stops the sheet releasing onto the grid, which is what a missed cleaning cycle produces. A dirty condenser is the second cause, and Whirlpool says it cuts capacity to little or no ice.
The third is the room, because a Whirlpool ice maker slow in a hot garage is inside its published behavior.
No, and the searches give it away. A Whirlpool ice maker mold and a Whirlpool ice maker arm stuck on the bin both describe a refrigerator module. So does a Whirlpool ice maker not dispensing ice, because this machine has no dispenser.
Water here circulates over a freezing plate, a sheet is released onto a cutter grid, and the bin fills from above.
