Amana Chest and Upright Freezers in Denver Metro

Amana’s one current freezer is the AZCC2316T chest; its AZF33X uprights are still in homes. Amana freezer repair starts with which one you own. They defrost and signal faults differently, and our EPA-608 certified technicians repair both across Denver Metro.

Chest, Upright or Older: Which Amana Freezer You Have

Only one Amana freezer is current: the AZCC2316T chest, with Amana’s Up-Front Temperature Control System. The table shows where the main models in Amana’s records stand.

The two classes defrost differently, which changes the diagnosis. Amana’s product data lists the AZCC2316TW with no automatic defrost, and the AZC5216LW and AQC0902LW as manual defrost with a drain. The AZF33X16DW upright defrosts automatically, with Amana’s Free-O-Frost™ System.

A refrigerator’s freezer is a different machine. Amana top-freezer, bottom-freezer and side-by-side models are covered on our Amana refrigerator page. The Amana kitchen appliances page routes you to the rest: refrigerators, their ice makers and the ADFS2524R dishwasher.

Finding the Model Number, and What It Tells You

On an AZF33X upright, look for the serial tag inside the food compartment, as its manual describes. The AZCC2316T and AZCN2311TW manuals mention a rating plate without placing it. If you cannot find yours, book anyway. We read it at the visit.

Chest models in the Amana documents we read start AZC, AQC or AFC; uprights start AZF, or AFU on the 2005 recall.

Amana’s warranties ask for the model and serial number with proof of purchase. Keep both readable. The Amana freezer documents we read print no serial-number date code, so we never date a freezer from it.

Reading the Lights on an Amana Chest Freezer

In the Amana freezer documents we read, there are no letter or number fault codes and no service mode. Each control family has its own small set of lights. Read them by model.

On the AZCC2316T, the manual reads blue LEDs as the setting and SUPER, and green as the compressor running.

The AZCN2311TW’s 2026 manual prints one true fault signal: a temperature bar flashing left to right. The AZCC2316T manual prints no such signal. On the AZCN2311TW, SUPER runs the compressor without a break, then cancels itself after 52 hours and returns to Scale 5.

Knob Chests, Older AQC Chests and AZF33X Uprights

The AZC5216L and AQC0902L use a thermostat knob. Their manual gives it a freezer range of 6.8°F to -7.6°F and a refrigerator range of 33.8°F to 41°F, with a factory setting of 0°F.

On the older AQC0701TRW, AQC0901TRW and AQC1203TRW chests, knob 4 holds about 0°F, and a higher number is colder.

The AZF33X16DW upright has an electronic control at the front of the freezer compartment, with settings of Cold, Colder and Deepfreeze™. Amana recommends Colder. Its product data lists no temperature alarm and no door alarm.

Not Freezing or Not Cold Enough: Rule Out a Switch First

A dark, silent freezer may simply be switched off. Holding OFF for 3 seconds switches off an AZCC2316T, and the AZCN2311TW uses its ON/OFF key the same way. On the AZF33X16DW upright, a 3-second hold on Temp Setting stops cooling while the interior light stays on.

Some Amana chests also run as a refrigerator by design. A press past SUPER on the AZCC2316T SET key returns it to Fridge mode, levels 1 and 2. The knob chests have a refrigerator range too.

A new freezer runs nonstop until it is cold. Amana’s upright and knob-chest guides allow 6 to 8 hours or longer before you load it. The AZCC2316T’s quick start says to wait 24 hours.

Amana’s older AQC chest guide adds one case. A freezer that clicks but does not run after a power failure should stay unplugged for 30 minutes, lid closed, so the system can equalize.

An Amana freezer not working at all, with no lights and no sound, starts at the outlet. For an Amana freezer not cold enough, think back a day: the AZCC2316T manual lists a large warm load as a cause. For everything else, work through what Amana prints.

  1. Power: a grounded 115 V outlet on a 15 or 20 A circuit, not on a wall switch, and no extension cord. Test the outlet with a lamp, then check the breaker or fuse.
  2. Setting: the AZCC2316T manual says too warm a setting freezes too little, and level 7 too much. On an upright, change one step and wait 24 hours.
  3. Load: a large warm load in the last 24 hours, or a lid left open, explains a warm cabinet. Amana’s older chest guide caps a day’s load at about 2 to 3 lbs per cu ft.
  4. Location: no heat source nearby. The AZCC2316T wants 4 inches of space at the sides, top and back.
  5. Seal: close a dollar bill or a sheet of paper in the seal and pull. Little or no tension means a poor seal, says Amana’s freezer help article.
  6. Lid and level: frost or debris on the lock, or packages, can hold the lid open. A chest must sit level side to side and front to back, with shims if needed.

Frost, Defrosting and Water Around an Amana Freezer

Frost in a chest is upkeep, not a fault. The AZCC2316T manual says the cabinet becomes progressively covered with frost, which the owner removes by a manual defrost. The manual for the knob chests says to defrost at about 1/4 inch of frost, and at least once a year.

The AZF33X16DW upright works differently. Its product data lists automatic defrost, and the upright manual tells owners they will not have to defrost it. Heavy frost inside that upright is worth a call.

Frost on the lid seal is different. It means the seal is not airtight. The AZCC2316T and AZCN2311TW manuals’ fix is to warm the seal with a hair dryer on a cool setting and reshape it by hand. Amana’s older chest guide sends an Amana freezer door gasket that still will not seal all the way around to a technician.

Match water around a freezer to the defrost first. The AZC5216LW and AQC0902LW have a defrost drain, and the AZCC2316T drains through its plug and dial. With the drain closed and no defrost under way, an Amana freezer leaking water needs a technician.

Amana prints these defrost steps for the AZCC2316T.

  1. Unplug it before you start.
  2. Open the inside drain plug, then set a tray under the outer drain.
  3. Pull the drain dial and turn it 180 degrees to let the water out.
  4. No sharp metal tools: Amana warns against them on the evaporator.
  5. Allow a few hours: the manual says defrosting usually takes that long.

Garage Ready, With Conditions: Amana’s Room Temperatures

Amana’s papers give different room limits for the same chest, and the table below lists each with its source.

The garage claim comes from Amana’s product data. The owner’s manual for the same model is stricter. Amana’s Garage Ready top-freezer refrigerator, the ARTX2419SW, carries its own figure: 38° to 110°F. If a garage freezer warms up or stops, tell us where it stands when you book.

Warm walls are normal on the AZC5216L and AQC0902L. Their condenser is built into the side and front walls, and the manual calls the heat entirely normal. Amana’s upright guide says the outside of an AZF33X may feel warm too.

Amana’s manuals put condenser cleaning at once a year on the AZCC2316T and as often as every other month on the uprights. Its freezer help article leaves coil cleaning to a professional. Ask us to check it at the visit.

When to Call Wilson & Myers

Check four things yourself: the outlet and breaker, the off key, the setting and the seal. Once they pass, an Amana freezer not freezing is ours to diagnose. So is an Amana freezer not cooling.

Some faults Amana’s own papers send past the owner. On the AZCN2311TW, the flashing bar names a disconnected or shorted temperature sensor, with no owner fix printed. The AZCC2316T manual sends a fault that returns after its own checks to a service center. Amana’s chest manuals send lid hinge adjustment to a service company.

The AZCC2316T runs on a flammable refrigerant, and its manual asks for a licensed, EPA-certified refrigerant technician at disposal. Refrigerant work calls for EPA-608 certification. Our technicians hold it. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts.

Inside the first year, use Amana’s warranty service instead. Its contact is printed on your Amana warranty. I usually ask for the model number first, because each Amana freezer family reads its lights its own way. Book a repair online and tell us what the panel shows.

Recall 05-279: Older Amana AFU Upright Freezers

No CPSC recall names a current or documented Amana chest freezer, or the AZF33X uprights. Older Amana uprights are another matter. CPSC recall 05-279, dated September 27, 2005, covers Amana AFU automatic-defrost uprights sold September 2002 through February 2005.

Its hazard is a defrost heater coil that can become exposed inside the unit, which risks a shock. The exposed wire can also melt or burn the plastic liner.

The record does not say whether the remedy is still offered. So we check first. We read the plate against the three lines below before any repair, and a matching freezer goes to the remedy.

  • Model

    Begins AFU1567, AFU1767 or AFU2067, in 15, 17 or 20 cu ft.

  • Made

September 2002 through February 2004, printed as 200209 through 200402 on the label inside the cabinet.

  • Remedy

CPSC lists a free remedy for these units, an in-home repair, and says to unplug any unit not yet repaired.

Amana’s One-Year Freezer Warranty, and Who Does the Work

Every Amana freezer warranty text we read gives one year of parts and labor. The sealed system gets no extra years. The two current texts differ on the points below.

Both name the AZF33X uprights, and the documents we read do not say which applies. A removed or unreadable serial plate costs the coverage under every text we read.

Inside year one, Amana’s warranty service does covered repairs, through the contact printed on your Amana warranty. We are not that service. After year one, the repair is yours to buy and ours to do. Our Amana overview lists the other Amana machines we repair.

Amana Freezer Repair FAQ

  • What are common problems with an Amana chest freezer?

Amana’s AZCC2316T troubleshooting covers food not frozen enough, food frozen too hard, frost on the seal and a lid that will not reopen. Its causes are settings, an open lid, a warm load, nearby heat and a poor seal. None of those is a failed part.

A lid that will not reopen right after closing is the tight seal at work; wait a few minutes. If the cabinet stays warm after those checks, book a visit.

  • Can an Amana chest freezer go in an unheated garage?

Amana’s product data says yes for the AZCC2316TW and AZC5216LW, from 0° to 110°F. Its AZCC2316T manual asks for 61°F to 110°F.

If yours lives in a garage, tell us when you book.

  • Why is my Amana freezer light not working?

Check the model first. Amana’s product data lists no interior light on the AZC5216LW, while the AZCC2316TW has LED interior lighting.

On the AZF33X16DW upright, a working interior light with a dark control panel means cooling was switched off. Amana’s warranty lists light bulbs among the consumables it does not cover. Tell us which light is out when you book.

  • Can an Amana upright freezer take an ice maker?

Not the AZF33X16DW. Its product data says it is not ice maker compatible. Amana’s manual for the AZF33X uprights says a kit fits some models, installed with its water line by a qualified service technician.

Refrigerator ice makers and their kits are on our Amana ice maker page.

  • Do you repair older Amana freezers?

Yes. Amana still serves documents for older chests such as the AQC0701TRW, AQC0901TRW and AQC1203TRW, and we work from them.

On any AFU upright, we check the plate against recall 05-279 before any repair.
