Only two Amana refrigerator families sold today make ice from the factory: the ASI2175GR and ASI2575GR side-by-sides. The rest take an add-on kit. Our EPA-608 certified technicians handle Amana ice maker repair on both across Denver Metro.
Troubleshooting Amana ice maker problems starts with the model, because Amana’s product data splits factory ice makers from add-on kits. The table shows which is which. On Amana’s own models, the data names a kit for every current top-freezer and bottom-freezer family.
The French-door ARFC3129T and ARFC3133T are documented, not current; their manual says a kit can be added to some models.
Amana makes no standalone ice machine. Its refrigerators keep the ice maker in the freezer, so an Amana freezer not making ice belongs here. Cooling faults in the cabinet itself are on our Amana refrigerator page, and upright freezers on our Amana freezer page. The Amana kitchen appliances page lists the rest, from chest freezers to the ADFS2524R dishwasher.
| Family | Class | Ice maker |
|---|---|---|
| ASI2175GR, ASI2575GR | Side-by-side | Factory installed, with a door dispenser |
| ARTX2014T, ARTX2314T, ARTX2019S, ARTX2419S, ARTX2021T, ARTX3028P | Top-freezer | Optional kit, named on the serial tag |
| ABB1924BR, ABB2224BR | Bottom-freezer | Optional kit, named on the serial tag |
| ART104TFD, ART308FFD | Top-freezer, closeout | Optional kit, named on the serial tag |
Look first inside the fresh-food compartment, high on a side wall or at the top front. Amana’s plate guides disagree on the exact spot. Amana’s manuals say the serial tag there carries the ice maker kit model on refrigerators that take a kit. In the kit instructions, the sample tag’s line reads USE ICE MAKER ACCESSORY KIT, then a number.
When you book, tell us the kit line on the tag. We check it against the kit you buy, then install it.
Amana’s ASI2575GR manual lists 25 causes across its three ice troubleshooting rows. Not one is a failed part. Amana’s kit charts and its water-and-ice help article point the same way. So Amana ice maker troubleshooting starts with the switch, the water and time.
Rule out time first. In its first day, an Amana ice maker not working is inside Amana’s own timing, set out by type in the table below. And check the lineup table: an Amana fridge not making ice may simply have no ice maker yet.
Garage Ready costs ice. The ARTX2419S is Amana’s only Garage Ready refrigerator and takes an add-on kit, and its manual says ice production drops in Garage Ready mode. Slower ice with the knob on Garage Ready is what that manual describes, not a fault.
For an Amana freezer ice maker not working fast enough, Amana’s guides set the freezer one step colder. Wait 24 hours between changes. On the ARTX3028P and ART104TFD, the quick start guide adds Airflow to Max for heavy ice use or a hot room.
For an Amana refrigerator ice maker not working after a kit install, add the installation to the checklist: valve, fill tube, line, harness. An Amana ice maker not making cubes, or making small or hollow ones, gets the same water checks. Then work through the list.

| A batch about every 3 hours, 8 to 12 batches a day | Top-freezer manual | Top-freezer models |
| About 3 lbs a day, 8 to 12 batches | Bottom-freezer manual | Bottom-freezer models |

The Amana manuals and kit instructions we read show no Amana ice maker reset button. Amana’s help site suggests one, or a one-minute power cycle. What the manuals do give is an on/off control.
A wire arm switches the ice maker on when lowered and off when lifted, and it rises by itself as the bin fills. A rocker switch reads ON (I) and OFF (O). On side-by-side styles, the switch can sit on the freezer-door wall behind the bin, or behind an ice maker door or panel.
The ASI2575GR manual covers both styles. Raise the wire arm, or press the switch to Off. If the arm is down, the switch is on, water is connected and the freezer is cold, the fault is ours to diagnose.
On the ASI2575GR, an Amana refrigerator ice dispenser not working has ten causes in its manual, and none is a failed part. Each has an owner step. An Amana ice maker not working on a side-by-side can also be a door, the lock or the filter.
Amana’s dispensing guide for these models adds a few normal behaviors. Crusher noise is normal, and after a switch to cubed, a few ounces of crushed ice come out first. Pressing the paddle harder does not dispense faster.
| Cause | What to do |
|---|---|
| Doors not fully closed | Close both doors fully |
| New installation | Allow 24 hours to first ice and 72 hours to fill |
| Ice maker off, or bin not seated | Switch it on and push the bin all the way in |
| Clumped ice or a blocked chute | Break clumps with a plastic utensil; clean the bin and chute every 2 weeks |
| Ice added from elsewhere | Use only this ice maker’s cubes |
| Dispenser locked | Turn the lock off |
| Crushed ice jammed, on door-bin models | Switch to cubed |
| Paddle held too long | Wait a few minutes; the dispenser stops by itself |
| Water pressure under 30 psi | Have the pressure checked |
| Filter clogged or not seated | Seat and lock it; change it when the status light turns red, at least every 6 months |
| All ten ruled out | The fault is ours to diagnose; book a technician |
Amana’s kit instructions are plain about installation. A qualified service technician installs the kit and its water line. Both kit instructions add, in capitals, that customer installation is not warranted by the refrigerator or ice maker manufacturer.
They call for potable cold water and a quarter-turn shut-off valve on a household line of at least 1/2 inch. Never use a piercing-type or 3/16-inch saddle valve.
We install the add-on kit you buy, after checking that your model takes that kit, and we run its water line. Our refrigerator water line installation service covers the supply. The chart below is the one the top-freezer kit instructions print, and the bottom-freezer chart adds one check: switch on, or arm lowered.
| Problem | Cause as printed | What the owner is told |
|---|---|---|
| Buzzing, trickling water or a thud | The water valve, water filling the cup, ice dropping into the bin | Normal |
| Ice tastes stale | Old ice | Make a new batch |
| Water overflows the ice maker | Refrigerator or ice maker not level | Level it; if it still overflows, shut off the water, raise the arm and call for service |
| Not enough ice | The bucket takes 72 hours to fill, with ice every 2 to 3 hours | Set the freezer colder |
| Ice making stopped | Arm not lowered, shut-off valve closed, or a clogged valve screen | Lower the arm and open the valve; a clogged screen is a service job |
Check four things yourself: the arm or switch, the shut-off valve, the line behind the cabinet and the freezer setting. Give a new ice maker 24 hours to start.
With those checks done, an Amana fridge ice maker not working is ours to diagnose. Amana’s kit charts also send two faults past the owner. A clogged valve screen is one. Overflow that leveling does not cure is the other.
Kits add their own joints. A kit that leaks or never fills sends us to its valve, fill tube, line and harness. I usually check the switch, the water supply and the pressure before any part, because Amana’s lists start there.
Refrigerant work calls for EPA-608 certification. Our technicians hold it. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts.
Inside year one, read the warranty section below first. Book a repair online and tell us the model and whether the ice maker came from the factory or a kit.
The ASI2175GR and ASI2575GR carry Amana’s refrigerator warranty: one year of parts and labor from delivery. Its text has no separate ice maker clause. Under that 2023 text, an outside servicer or third-party parts will not void the warranty, though damage they cause is excluded.
Amana’s top-freezer kit has its own warranty page. It gives one year on the ice maker, replacement parts and repair labor for defects. It excludes service calls to correct the installation, house plumbing and wiring, and damage from improper installation. That page names who handles its claims.
The refrigerator warranty also excludes installation not done to the instructions or plumbing codes. Water filters count as consumables. No CPSC recall names an Amana ice maker, ice maker kit or dispenser.
On the ASI side-by-sides, covered repairs in year one go to Amana’s warranty service, through the contact printed on your Amana warranty. We are not that service. After that, the repair is yours to buy and ours to do. Our Amana overview lists the other Amana machines we repair.
How do you reset an Amana ice maker?
The Amana manuals we read for these refrigerators show no reset button. They give an on/off arm or switch, and Amana’s help site adds a one-minute power cycle.
If the ice maker is on, water is connected and the freezer is cold, the fault is ours to diagnose.
Why is my Amana refrigerator buzzing with no ice?
An ice maker switched on without water does that. It can also make the fresh-food side too cold. Amana’s fix is to turn it off until the water line is connected.
On a working kit, Amana’s chart calls buzzing, trickling water and a thud normal.
Does my Amana refrigerator have an ice maker?
Check the model first. An Amana refrigerator not making ice since delivery may have none fitted. In Amana’s product data, only the ASI2175GR and ASI2575GR have one from the factory; every other current family lists it as optional.
The serial tag inside the fresh-food compartment names the kit on models that take one.
Why does my Amana ice taste or smell bad?
Amana’s ASI2575GR manual lists six causes for off-taste, odor or gray ice. None is a failed part. They are new plumbing, old ice, food odors, a non-recommended supply line, minerals such as sulfur and a new filter that needs flushing.
On a kit, Amana’s chart says stale ice calls for a new batch. If the taste stays after those, tell us when you book.
Can I install an Amana ice maker kit myself?
Amana’s kit instructions say a qualified service technician installs it, and that customer installation is not warranted.
Book the installation with us instead.
Tell us the refrigerator model number and whether the ice maker came from the factory or as a kit. That changes what our EPA-608 certified technician checks first.
