A GE range hood with working lights and a silent blower may only have a loose plug, which GE’s support article checks before any motor. We repair GE-badge hoods, and the label decides how. Check one thing first: GE builds its over-the-range microwaves to hang where a hood would, and those we do not service.
GE’s model numbers make an over-the-range microwave, which we do not take, easy to mistake for a GE vent hood. Both share a second letter in GE’s naming guide. It is V for vented or N for non-vented, so the split comes one place later.
On a current vented GE-badge hood, the third letter is X for under cabinet or W for wall mount. On every current GE-badge over-the-range microwave, which we do not service, it is M. GE’s guide reads that M as mounts under cabinet. No hood in GE’s catalog carries one there.
So JVX, JVW and UVW models are hoods, and so is the older JN327, which has a digit in that spot. The first two letters prove nothing on their own. A JNM is a microwave we do not repair. Some discontinued over-the-range units, also outside what we service, skip the M, so check the label too.
The label backs the letters up. GE’s hood books put it on the inside of the hood, or on the back wall of a JN327. A label you can read only with a door open marks an over-the-range microwave, which we do not repair. Underneath settles nothing, because GE lists a bottom location for both.
The 36-inch UVW8361, UVW8364 and UVW9361 carry the GE Profile badge, and so does every current island, custom insert and downdraft hood. GE Profile appliances have their own GE Profile page with us. A hood works over a range or a cooktop, and GE’s ranges, ovens, wall ovens and cooktops share our GE cooking appliances page.
| Check | GE range hood | Over-the-range unit we do not repair |
|---|---|---|
| GE catalog shelf | Range Hoods and Ventilation | Over-the-Range Microwave Ovens, which we do not service |
| Third letter | X or W, or a digit on the JN327 | M |
| Label | Inside the hood, where a filter may need to come out | Inside the oven, seen with the door open |
| Charcoal filter GE names | JXCF53, JXCF55, JXCF72, UXCF91 or WB02X10700 | JX81 kits, WB02X33061 or WB06X10807 |
When a GE hood vent lights up but its blower stays silent, GE’s support article points at a connector. The blower plug may be loose or not seated. GE’s JVX and JVW books put it bluntly: a dangling connector means “the installer failed to plug it in securely.”
GE’s hood troubleshooting names no failed part, with no motor, capacitor, control board or switch anywhere in it. The order of checks is short.
Out of the box, a JVX recirculates. It sends its air back into the kitchen through the front of the hood. GE’s books say it can be installed that way and ships in that configuration. They also call a charcoal filter necessary for a recirculating install.
GE includes the JXCF53 with the JVX3240 and JVX3300. A recirculating JVX5300, JVX5305 or JVX5360 needs the GE range hood charcoal filter JXCF55, which GE leaves out of the box.
The JVX5305 earns its ENERGY STAR rating only when vented, and never on duct under 7 inches in diameter. Ducting any JVX outside is a conversion.
A duct smaller than GE specifies means reduced venting. GE’s troubleshooting tables list wrong duct size as a cause and say to keep runs, transitions and elbows to a minimum. Then comes the line to read before any visit: GE’s manual says service cannot correct a wrong duct size. Find your line in the table below and compare the duct above your hood with GE’s size.
GE’s JVX books rule out flexible duct of any type, and its UVW books say flexible vent greatly reduces performance. Improper installation is excluded from GE’s warranty too. For make-up air, GE sets no figure of its own and defers to local building code.
When the duct itself is the fault, the fix is installation work rather than a repair. We connect a hood to the ductwork already in place, and a new duct path through a wall or ceiling needs a contractor. That boundary is on our range hood replacement page.
| Line | Duct GE specifies | Recirculating setup |
|---|---|---|
| JVX under cabinet | 7-inch round, or 3 1/4 by 10 inch rectangular | Ships recirculating and vents out the front |
| JVW pyramid chimney | 6-inch round, up through the ceiling | Duct cover vents out the sides, JXCF72 charcoal sold separately |
| UVW8301 and UVW9301 | 8-inch round | Recirculation duct and UXCF91 charcoal included |
| UVW8304 | 8-inch round | Recirculation duct and UXCF91 charcoal not included |
| JN327 | No duct, it only recirculates | WB02X10700 charcoal filter |
The 30-inch UVW hoods carry four features that can pass for faults, and none of them is a failed part. The first is Chef Connect. It pairs the hood with a Chef Connect range over Bluetooth, with no Wi-Fi or phone.
Fan sync ships switched off, so the fan will not follow the range until someone changes that setting. The pairing window closes after 2 minutes. If the range will not pair, or has a fault of its own, our GE range page takes it from there.
GE’s heat sensor article covers hoods starting with UVW. If heavy cooking heats the air around a hood left off, the blower comes on.
GE lets the installer rewire this model to cap its blower for local code. Wired for a 290 CFM maximum, it runs Low, Medium and High only.
On the UVW9301, a red light above Reset Filter is a reminder to clean or change the filter. Holding the pad for 3 seconds turns it off.
For one year from the original purchase, GE replaces a part that fails from a defect and covers the labor. The warranty carries over to a later owner, for a hood bought for home use in the USA. GE asks for proof of the purchase date.
Three exclusions touch hood calls directly: improper installation, a tripped breaker or blown fuse, and a visit to teach you the controls. Commercial use is not covered either. Inside the first year, start with GE’s warranty service before paying anyone, us included.
Bulbs are where the warranty splits. GE excludes bulb service except for LED lamps, so an LED failure inside that year can be a warranty call. The UVW8304 book goes further and sends every LED lamp change to a service appointment. Other lamps are yours to change.
Before booking, run GE’s own checks. With the fan on high, hold a tissue under the hood: GE says the suction should hold it in place. The damper should swing freely, and GE notes its blades can flip over and stop short of open. Seat the grease filter open end up, and check the vent for a nest or leftover packing.
Past those checks, the work is ours. I usually pull the filters and read the label before touching anything, because those letters decide which GE book applies. A blower still dead with its plug seated needs a technician. So does a fan that keeps cycling on clean filters.
Every technician we send is insured. An LED lamp change on a UVW8304 is technician work by GE’s own book, and outside the warranty year it is ours. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts, and we fit OEM parts when the supplier has the right one.
If the model number starts JVM, JNM, GVMB or HDM, it is an over-the-range microwave we do not service. Otherwise, book online with the model number. Add what the lights and the fan are doing.
A timer may be doing it. On a GE 36″ under the cabinet range hood JVX5360SJSS, holding Fan Off for 3 seconds sets a 15-minute auto off. JVW hoods take a 2-second hold, and UVW hoods call the same feature Delay Off.
Boost ends on its own too, after 10 minutes on push-button JVX, JVW and UVW9301 hoods and after 15 on the UVW8304. Constant stopping and restarting is different. GE reads that as a motor probably overheating, so clean the filters first.
It depends on the book. GE’s JVX and JVW books say every 6 months or as needed, and the UVW books say every month. The metal grease filters are dishwasher safe, and GE wants one in place whenever the hood runs.
Charcoal cannot be cleaned, only replaced. GE gives 6 to 12 months on JVX, JVW and JN327 hoods, and 6 months on UVW hoods. The GE 24″ under the cabinet range hood JVX3240SJSS ships with its JXCF53 charcoal filter in the box.
Three current GE hoods can. GE’s wall switch conversion covers the JVX3240, the JVX5305 and the GE 30″ under cabinet range hood JVX3300DJ. The hood’s own rocker must stay on, and the wall switch then runs the fan at the speed that rocker sets. If the wall switch does nothing, check that rocker first.
Start at the house breaker. If it has not tripped and neither the lights nor the blower come on, GE says the hood is not connected properly or is miswired. GE then sends you to your installer or an electrician.
If the lights work and only the blower is dead, the blower plug is GE’s first suspect. A blower still silent with that plug seated is ours.
It can happen on a hood that works, by GE’s own account. GE says a hood will not always capture all the steam from long boils on the front burners, and suggests the back burners instead. It also says some lower-CFM hoods should not go over high-BTU professional-style cooking products.
If the cooktop under the hood is the part misbehaving, our GE cooktop page picks that up. Smoke from a faulty oven below belongs on our GE oven page.
No. We do not service over-the-range microwaves from any maker. On GE units, the model number starts JVM, JNM, GVMB or HDM. GE range hood numbers start JVX, JVW or UVW, or read JN327.
Add the model number from the label inside the hood when you book. Its letters tell our technician which GE family and manual apply.
