All gas burners sparking together is normal on a GE cooktop, even with only one knob at LITE. Three facts decide the repair: the model line, its age against GE’s warranty, and whether it is a recalled JP3030. The cooktop on a GE range is a different job, covered on our GE range page.
For a GE cooktop burner not working, the first checks split by fuel. Several rows below describe behavior GE calls normal, and the last column says where a technician takes over.
If a hood above blows air down on a gas cooktop, GE says that airflow can interfere with the burners. A fault in the hood itself belongs on our GE range hood page. Our guide to a gas burner clicking but not lighting goes deeper on that one fault.
| Symptom | Check first | When it needs a technician |
|---|---|---|
| All burners click at once | Normal while any knob sits at LITE. Gas flows only to the burner you chose. | Clicking that continues after turning off and relighting |
| Clicks but will not light | A burner can take up to 10 or 12 clicks. Dry a freshly cleaned burner, match each cap to its head, and seat the electrode flush. | A strong spark and still no flame |
| No clicking at all | Check that the plug is fully in, then the breaker or fuse. A GFCI outlet on that circuit can trip. | Igniters still silent with power confirmed |
| Low flame goes out when a cabinet door closes | Seal openings in the floor under the cooktop and the wall behind it, which GE says keeps drafts off the burners. | Resetting the low flame at each valve |
| Flames yellow, lifting or uneven | Soft blue is normal on natural gas, and yellow tips on propane. Seat the caps and clear the burner slots. | Long, bright yellow flames, which GE says are not normal |
| Smell of gas | Do not light anything or touch an electrical switch. Call the gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone. | The gas supplier comes first |
| Symptom | Check first | When it needs a technician |
|---|---|---|
| Element cycles off on High | Normal. A temperature limiter protects the glass, and flat, centered pans make it cycle less. | Not a fault by itself |
| Hot surface light stays on | Normal until the glass cools to about 150°F. | Light still on over a cold element |
| Burner will not turn off | Switch it off at the breaker. On a JP3030 showing the recall light pattern, contact GE. | Any burner that stays on outside the recall |
| No element heats | Check the breaker, because these tops have no plug. On a JEP, turn the lock knob to Unlock, since a locked top sounds when a knob leaves Off. | Power and lock both confirmed, still no heat |
| Cracked or pitted glass | Stop cooking on it. GE warns spills can reach inside a broken top and create a shock risk. | Right away, per GE |
| Still boiling after turning down | Normal on radiant elements, especially on Power Boil. | Not a fault |
| Shiny marks or scratches | GE says aluminum marks left on a hot top and deep scratches are permanent. | Cosmetic, not a working fault |
Three checks come before booking. Read the model and serial tag, and rule out the JP3030 recall described below. Then check the purchase date, because inside the first year the repair belongs to GE’s warranty service.
After those checks, these faults are ours. For GE gas cooktop repair, that means burners that spark but never light, silent igniters and a low flame that will not hold. On the glass tops, we take elements that stay cold, burners that will not switch off and cracked glass.
In my experience, the model tag decides a GE cooktop visit before a single screw comes out. It settles the family, the age and the recall question in one look.
Our technicians are insured, and every GE cooktop repair carries our 100-day labor warranty. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts, and we fit OEM parts when the supplier has the right one. For other brands, see our general cooktop repair page.
For GE electric cooktop repair, or a gas top that will not light, book online with the model number ready. On a gas cooktop, check behind the left knob first. Its gas regulator or wiring connection sits in the cabinet below, so clear that cabinet before the visit.
GE’s recall list carries one GE cooktop recall. It was announced November 30, 2023, for JP3030 knob-control radiant tops made from July through September 2022. On those units a burner can stay on after its knob is turned off, because of misaligned knob stems and fractured knob parts.
The tell is in the lights. The “On” light goes out, but that burner’s “Hot Cooktop” light stays lit until the breaker is switched off.
The remedy is free installation of a replacement burner knob assembly, arranged through GE Appliances. Until then, switch the cooktop off at the breaker whenever it is not in use. The notice also says to keep flammable items and empty pans off and away from it. Recall work is GE’s to do, not ours.
The tag reads JP3030DJ4BB, JP3030SJ4SS or JP3030TJ4WW.
It begins LT, MT, RT or ST, and GE’s own table limits the LT serials to a few short ranges.
The On light is out while a Hot Cooktop light stays lit.
GE shows the JP3030DWBB, JP3030SWSS and JP3030TWWW made from January 2024, after the recall window.
On a gas model, the installation instructions say the model and serial number may also be found behind the left knob. Turn every knob to OFF and pull the left one straight up. Leave the cooktop in place. The manual warns that lifting it can damage the gas tubing to the burners.
On an electric model, the label sits under the cooktop. The recalled JP3030 tops carry it on the bottom, close to the front left burner.
The serial number opens with two letters. The first is the month and the second is the year. Those year letters repeat about every 12 years, so the model’s production dates settle it. The current JGP gas family dates from September 2017 on GE’s pages, so a second letter H means 2017, not 2005.
Current GE gas cooktops start JGP, and current electric radiant glass tops start JP or JEP.
The JP3030 and the JEP5030 share one catalog name, the GE 30″ Built-In Knob Control Electric Cooktop. The 36-inch JP3036 and JEP5036 share a name too. So the name alone does not identify the cooktop.
Older GE cooktops include touch-control glass tops and coil tops, which GE no longer lists as current.
GE Profile, Café and Monogram run their own lines. Every current downdraft or touch-control cooktop on GE’s site is a GE Profile. No GE-badge induction cooktop appears there, current or discontinued. Induction belongs to GE Profile, and we do not service induction cooktops.
The oven, the wall oven and the hood above a cooktop each have their own page under GE cooking appliance repair.
The GE cooktop warranty runs one year from the original purchase. It covers any part that fails from a defect in materials or workmanship, with GE’s warranty service handling the labor. Proof of the purchase date is needed.
None of GE’s current cooktop warranty texts gives the glass, burners or elements a longer term. Inside that year, call GE’s warranty service before paying for a repair. Read the exclusions before you rely on it.
JGP cooktops leave the factory set for natural gas. The propane orifices come attached to the regulator packed with the unit. GE’s instructions give the conversion to a qualified propane gas installer. Keep every orifice and the instructions afterward, in case the cooktop goes back to natural gas.
The JGP product pages list the same burner ratings on propane as on natural gas, 15,000 BTU Power Boil included. A general GE article says propane lowers output. These model pages show otherwise. Flames touching or rising above the grate can point to an improper conversion, GE says.
The conversion sheets ask the installer to fill out a propane sticker and apply it near the regulator. Check for that sticker before booking. Running a cooktop on propane before the regulator and orifices are converted can cause high flames and toxic fumes.
GE’s gas installation instructions require a high altitude kit “Over 6000ft,” on natural gas or propane. The natural gas kit is WB28X29862, and the propane kit is WB28X29861. The natural gas kit sheet lists replacement top burner orifices for the JGP3030, JGP3530, JGP3036, JGP5030 and JGP5036.
Parts of Castle Rock and Castle Pines sit above 6,000 feet, while Denver sits near 5,300. GE’s natural gas kit sheet gives the fitting to a qualified installer or the gas supplier. Above that line, find out whether a kit was ever fitted. The radiant cooktop instructions give no altitude requirement.
One year from the original purchase. Parts and labor for defects are covered. On the radiant glass tops, impact damage is excluded, and chips or scratches must be reported within 90 days of installation.
Only in pairings GE approves. GE’s radiant instructions say both units carry a label naming the approved combinations. Read both labels before changing either unit. The oven underneath is covered on our GE wall oven page.
It depends on the width. GE’s current 30-inch gas and radiant cooktops both list a 28-1/2 by 19-5/8 inch cutout, and the 36-inch models 33-7/8 by 19-1/8. For a 30-inch radiant cutout larger than that, up to 29-13/16 by 20-7/16 inches, GE offers the JXTR32B or JXTR32W filler trim kit. Fitting a new unit is cooktop installation rather than a repair.
Not the current GE models. Every one uses knob controls, and none of their product pages lists a display to show a code. GE’s manuals for them print no code list either. On a glass top, tell us which indicator lights are on.
The knob may still be at LITE; GE’s manual says to turn it out of LITE to your setting. If ticking continues, turn the burner off and relight it, and if it still ticks, GE says to call for service.
The model number, which a gas model may also show behind the left knob, and what the burners or lights are doing. Say if it runs on propane, or if your home sits above 6,000 feet, where GE requires a high altitude kit.
On a radiant glass top, turn every knob to Off. An element left on when the power goes out will turn back on as soon as power returns. That comes from GE’s manual for its 30-inch and 36-inch radiant cooktops.
On a gas cooktop, GE says the surface burners may be lit with a match in a power failure, using extreme caution.
Tell us the model and serial numbers when you book, because they settle the family and the recall question. On a gas cooktop, check behind the left knob.
