Three things decide a GE oven repair: gas or electric, which control it has, and whether the fault survives GE’s own reset. This page covers the oven cavity of any GE range or wall oven. Some faults that look serious end at a lever or a setting. GE’s own manuals say so.
GE ovens come two ways: inside a gas or electric range, or as a wall oven. Every current GE wall oven is electric. On GE ovens, repair starts with knowing which one you own.
In-Oven Camera and Precision Cooking Modes are GE Profile features. GE’s current induction and dual fuel ranges carry the Profile badge too. We do not take induction work. GE Profile, Café and Monogram ovens have their own brand pages with us, and any other brand starts at our oven repair page.
Over-the-range and countertop microwaves sit outside what we service. The upper cavity of GE’s two combination wall ovens is a built-in microwave, which belongs with the wall oven.
Our GE cooking appliance repair branch also holds the range itself, cooktops, range hoods and wall ovens. Surface burners belong on the GE range page. So does how a range fits the counter.
A GE gas oven not heating up, but burners work fine: that pattern points to one lever before any part. The lever sits on the range’s pressure regulator, near where the gas line attaches. GE’s manuals say to find it and flip it. GE warns it may not be obvious.
GE says a regulator jarred during installation can spring back to off. The top burners keep working. The oven does not. If the lever cannot be found, GE says a service visit may be needed to reset it.
On a GE gas stove, oven not working can also mean no power. GE says the igniter and gas valve need power to open. That is why no match will light it.
With power on, set Bake and open the door. Look for a red glow at the back of the oven floor. No glow can mean a fault in the GE oven igniter, the controls or other electrical parts, GE says.
Clicking while the oven holds temperature is normal. GE’s range manual says relays cycle to keep the heat steady. Past these checks, GE gas oven repair means testing the bake and broil Glowbars and the dual safety valve. Our guide to a gas oven not lighting covers the same glow check for other brands.
A boom, or a door that blows open, needs service. GE says the oven should light in 2 to 3 seconds.
Yellow tips are normal on propane. Flames that are all yellow or orange point to air flow, gas pressure or bad gas.
On an electric GE oven that will not heat, start at the breaker. If the oven has two breakers, GE says to make sure neither one tripped.
On a range, a GE oven heating element can be checked by eye with the breaker off and the range unplugged, GE says. A cracked or broken element needs replacing. Of GE’s 29 current wall ovens, 23 hide the bake element, and no current GE range does.
Rarely, a GE oven element shorts against its sheath. GE describes sparks for a few seconds, a tripped breaker and a burning plastic smell. It says no danger exists, but not to use the oven once an element fails.
We match every heating element for GE ovens to the full model number on the rating plate. Our oven not heating up guide ranks the wider causes across brands.
There is one GE oven error codes list, from GE Appliances. GE says it cannot list every code. GE’s current range and wall oven manuals carry GE oven troubleshooting pages, but none lists individual codes. Find the code in the first table below, and your control family’s reset steps in the second.
A GE oven F2 error code means the oven temperature passed a preset threshold, for a reason GE calls unknown. The GE oven F20 error code shares that row. GE publishes no temperature for either.
For any GE oven error code, F2 included, begin with the reset your control’s manual prints. Reading the F2 error code GE ovens show as a dead sensor jumps ahead. GE names no part for it.
GE’s list gives the GE oven F3 error code the same meaning as F4: the oven sensor usually needs replacing. F5, F8 and FF point to the electronic control. On those codes, GE oven control board repair usually means a replacement.
The GE oven F96 error code points to an internal component, GE says. So do F97 and F7X. A GE oven F350 error code points to the upper cooling fan circuit, or something blocking the fan.
If a code will not clear, GE suggests leaving the breaker off until service, except briefly to use a range’s surface units.
| Code | GE's meaning | Part GE names |
|---|---|---|
| F0, F1, F6, F7 | Usually the keypanel, which many times needs replacing | Keypanel |
| F2 or F20 | Oven temperature passed a preset threshold, reason unknown | None |
| F3, F4 | The oven sensor usually needs replacing | Oven sensor |
| F5, F8, FF | The electronic control usually needs replacing | Electronic control |
| F9, FC | A part failed somewhere in the door lock circuit | None |
| F96, F97, F7X | An internal component usually needs replacing | Internal component |
| F350 | Upper cooling fan circuit, or an obstruction in the fan | None |
| FD | The probe or its receptacle may need replacing | Probe or receptacle |
| Bad Line | Power reaches the unit, but it was wired incorrectly | None, a wiring fix |
| Control family | GE models | GE's steps |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 and newer ranges | GGF and GRF 400 to 600, GGS and GRS 500 and 600 | Cancel and let it cool. If it repeats, cut power 30 seconds, then call if it returns |
| Touch-control J ranges | JB256, JBS360, JD630, JM250, JBS60, JBS86, JSS86, JGB735, JGBS60, JGBS61, JGBS66, JGB670, JGS760, JGBS86, JGSS86 | Cancel/Off and cool one hour. If it repeats, cut power 30 seconds, then call if it returns |
| 3000, 5000 and 24-inch wall ovens | JKS, JTS, JKD, JTD, JRP20, JRP28, JRS06 | The same one-hour steps, with Clear/Off on 24-inch models |
| Combination wall ovens | JK3800SHSS, JT3800SHSS | No F-code: an oven error shows with SERVICE MAY BE NEEDED. The same one-hour steps follow |
| Knob-thermostat ranges | JGBS10, JGBS30, JAS640, JGAS640 | No code row in the manual. GE programs codes into electronic oven controls |
On a GE oven, troubleshoot the settings first. A GE oven display not working may just have its clock turned off, a cause most of GE’s touch-control manuals list.
If a GE oven won’t turn on and nothing below explains it, GE’s next step is the breaker. Switch it off for one minute, then on. GE suggests it for a GE oven not turning on even when the clock still lights.
GE expects an oven to swing about 30 degrees either side of the set point in most cases. Grocery-store thermometers may read 20 to 40 degrees off, GE’s manuals add. GE recommends a biscuit test instead.
If baking stays wrong, GE’s manuals show how to calibrate a GE oven yourself. On touch controls, the offset sits in your manual’s Settings or Special Features menu and runs 35 degrees either way. Make one change, then use the oven three to five times before another.
On knob models, the GE oven thermostat adjusts from the back of the OVEN TEMP knob. Each click moves the temperature about 10 degrees. The limit and the turning direction differ by model, so follow your own manual.
The GE oven temperature sensor location is the back of the oven, per GE. If the oven still bakes wrong and shows F3 or F4, GE ties both codes to the GE oven sensor.
Preheat has published norms too: 15 to 20 minutes for gas and hidden bake, 5 to 10 for a visible element. A 208-volt supply is slower than 240. GE puts the difference at 25 percent.
During self-clean the door locks, and it stays locked until the oven has cooled, GE says. If it still will not open, GE says to cut power for 30 seconds. Next comes a short self-clean of one to two hours, then about 30 minutes of waiting. GE says never to force the latch.
A GE oven F9 error, like FC, means a failed part in the door lock circuit. It needs service once GE’s reset steps have failed.
Before you book a GE oven repairman, run the five checks below. A GE oven not working may only need a lever, a breaker or a setting.
On a GE oven call I usually ask for two things first. One is the full model number from the rating plate, with the extra letters GE adds for service and parts. Each GE owner’s manual prints the plate’s location on its cover, and GE runs a model and serial number locator online. The other is exactly what the display shows.
Inside GE’s one-year warranty, GE’s warranty service comes first. Our technicians are insured, and our GE oven repair service covers range and wall ovens across the Denver Metro Area. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts. Book GE oven service online and add both details.
A GE oven F7 error sits with F0, F1 and F6 in GE’s list, which usually means the keypanel. Run the reset your control family’s manual prints first. If the code returns, GE says the keypanel often needs replacing.
Start with the fuel. On gas, check the oven shut-off lever and look for the igniter’s red glow. On electric, check both breakers and the bake element. Either way, rule out Sabbath Mode and locked controls.
On a GE electric range, oven not working while the cooktop heats gets three checks from GE. Set the controls for Bake or Broil. Move any mechanical self-clean latch to unlocked. Then, with the power off, look for cracks or breaks in the bake element.
For a code, follow your control family’s steps above. For a frozen control, GE says to switch the breaker off, wait one minute and switch it back on.
How to self-clean GE ovens starts with the model number. On GE’s 2024-and-newer ranges, the letter after the series number names the cleaning system. P is pyro plus steam, S is steam clean and A is Advanced Clean, the EasyWash tray models.
A GRF400PV has self-clean, for example, and a GRF400SV has steam clean only. As for how to steam clean GE ovens, GE’s product copy says it needs no special water, kits or extra steps.
A brief odor when the oven first starts is normal, GE says, and it fades within minutes. A rotten-egg smell is different. Open the windows, touch no electrical switches and call your gas supplier from outside. Our guide to a gas oven that smells like gas explains the difference.
One year of parts and labor is the term on GE’s current ranges and wall ovens. The GE oven warranty also covers later owners, for home use in the USA. GE oven repairs inside that year go through GE’s warranty service. After that, the repair is ours.
Yes. Our insured technicians handle GE oven service, repair and diagnosis for ranges and wall units across the Denver Metro Area. When you book, add the full model number and what the display shows, because those two details decide the first checks.
Yes. General Electric oven service starts from the full model number, whatever the age. A General Electric oven heating element or igniter is sourced through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts.
Tell us the full model number and what the display shows. Those two details decide which of GE's steps come next.
