A GE range can lose its burners while the oven still bakes, and GE’s own troubleshooting uses the oven to narrow it down. This page covers GE stove top repair and the range around it: burners, igniters, elements, glass, controls and fit. Bake, broil and oven fault codes belong on our GE oven page.
GE range troubleshooting starts with what GE designs in on purpose. Rule these out before you book.
With one knob at LITE, all the igniters fire, but gas reaches only your burner.
Sensi-Temp cuts the coil near a 450°F pan, then cycles it red and dark.
Radiant elements cycle to hold your setting, and dark glass can still be hot.
GE advises keeping the breaker off until service, but you may switch it on to use the burners.
GE says a gas range’s surface burners can be lit with a match, with extreme caution.
Lock Controls is on. On G-series models, hold the Lock Control pad for three seconds.
Sabbath mode is on, and GE’s code article draws that symbol as a backwards C. Take the range out of it first.
A model starting with P is GE Profile, a separate badge with its own page here, as are Café and Monogram. GE’s current induction and dual fuel ranges are all Profile models, and we do not take induction work. Another brand on the tag belongs on our general stove and cooktop repair page.
An oven in a wall cabinet is a GE wall oven. A counter-mounted top with no oven below is a standalone GE cooktop. Each has its own page.
A GE range model number always begins with a letter. Where to find the model number on a GE stove is covered in the FAQ. Take the GE 30″ gas range JGBS61RPSS: J is GE, G is gas, B is 30-inch freestanding. The GE 30-inch slide-in electric range GRS500PVSS reads G, R, S: GE, radiant electric, slide-in.
GE stove burners on current gas ranges are sealed, with electronic ignition. GE gas range troubleshooting follows GE’s own checklist, from the knob to the electrode.
When a GE gas stove igniter keeps clicking when off, GE names two causes. The knob has not popped back out at OFF, or moisture is left from cleaning. Let it dry a few hours; if the clicking continues, GE says service is required.
GE warns that a range hood blowing air down on the cooktop can interfere with the burners.
GE’s G-series gas manual calls a burner grate for a GE gas stove dishwasher safe, but never for self-clean. On the J-series, keep the rubber feet on a GE gas stove grate out of self-clean too, because GE says it destroys them.
If no burner clicks while the oven works, GE says it needs service: book GE gas stove repair near me for that. If a burner clicks but will not light, run the checks below first. Our guide to a gas stove clicking but not lighting goes further.
GE electric range repair splits by cooktop: coil or glass. GE’s coil ranges run from the GE 30″ freestanding electric range JB256DMWW to the JM250 drop-in. Since 2018, UL rules require temperature limiting on coil ranges, so each GE coil has a Sensi-Temp sensor button that must touch the pan.
A Sensi-Temp coil keeps heating after the pan comes off, until the knob reaches OFF. Replace a GE stove element only with the exact replacement part, GE’s manual says. On ranges built since the rule change, a Sensi-Temp GE stove heating element cannot be replaced by one without it. GE calls for a qualified technician when the sensor cap sticks or will not flex up and down.
A GE electric stove not heating up on any burner while the oven still bakes may need service, GE says. For a GE electric stove burner not working after cleaning, GE lists these checks first.
GE electric range troubleshooting on glass starts with the temperature limiter, which GE’s G-series manual puts on every radiant element. It may cycle an element off when the pan boils dry, sits off center, is not flat or is missing.
A GE glass top stove burner not working at all is not that cycling. Nor is it normal when a GE glass top stove burner stays on high whatever the knob says. Both are faults for a technician, and GE electric stove repair on glass starts there.
GE builds the hot light two ways. It stays on up to 30 minutes on current G-series tops, and until the glass nears 150°F on J-series and drop-in models.
Pitting from a hot sugar spill is where GE glass top stove repair means new glass. Wipe sugary spills while hot, GE says, because its warranty does not cover that pitting.
Run GE’s checks first: the knob at LITE, caps seated and dry, the plug and breaker, and the lock and Sabbath settings. One GE stove burner not working while the rest heat narrows the fault to that burner. GE stove troubleshooting stops where GE’s own documents call for service.
That point is ours: no burner clicking at all, or an oven that lights while no surface burner will. On electric ranges, it is a stuck Sensi-Temp cap, a damaged coil receptacle or pitted glass. Inside the first year, though, a defect belongs to GE’s warranty service.
I usually start from the tag: on a GE range, its letters say gas or electric before I open anything. Our technicians are insured, and a 100-day labor warranty covers our work. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts.

GE’s current range owner’s manuals print the same term: one year from the original purchase, parts and labor. A GE range warranty gives no longer term to any burner, element or glass top.
Inside that year, GE replaces a part that fails from a defect and asks for proof of the purchase date. Call GE’s warranty service before you book us. The GE gas range warranty and the electric one both exclude improper installation.
On glass-top models such as the GE 30″ freestanding electric range GRF400SVSS, the GE electric range warranty adds exclusions dated January 1, 2022. Impact or misuse damage is out, and so are cosmetic chips or scratches not reported within 90 days of installation.
GE’s installation guides for its current gas ranges require an altitude kit “Over 6000ft,” on natural gas or propane. Denver sits near 5,300 feet, but parts of Castle Rock and Castle Pines sit above 6,000. On a General Electric gas stove repair above that line, the kit is the first thing to confirm. Its number depends on the range’s platform and fuel.
Every GE gas range leaves the factory set for natural gas, and GE requires a qualified propane installer for any conversion. On a J-series model such as the GE 30″ freestanding gas range JGBS66DEKBB, the conversion orifices come on the back of the range. G-series ranges pack them with the owner’s manual.
On propane, yellow tips on the outer cones are normal, but GE says long, bright yellow flames are not normal. If yours burn that way, GE says to contact the technician who made the conversion. A smaller flame on propane can be designed in. On the GE 30″ gas range JGBS66REKSS, the center oval burner drops from 10,000 BTU on natural gas to 8,000.
In December 2021, GE recalled ranges in the model families below. A range could tip when a heavy object sat on its open oven door. The risk arises when the anti-tip bracket is not secured, and the recall covers serials that begin HS or LS. GE’s notice dates those ranges from May to June 2021.
A GE 30″ freestanding gas range JGBS30DEKBB is in a listed family, but only an HS or LS serial puts it in the recall. GE’s remedy is an in-home inspection of the bracket, and until then CPSC says to keep objects off the open door.
GE’s tip test suits every model: pull carefully from the rear, and a secured bracket stops the range within 4 inches of the wall. Re-engage the bracket after any move, as GE instructs. The recalled families follow.
GE’s current G-series manuals put the label behind the door or drawer. The manual for the GE 30″ freestanding gas range JGBS10DEMWW puts it on the front, behind the range drawer. For other styles, GE’s range locator shows how to find GE stove model number tags, some under a lift-up cooktop. A number ending in P and digits on a caution label is not the model number, GE warns.
For its gas ranges, GE lists a blown fuse or tripped breaker, or a plug not fully in a live, grounded outlet. A blank display can also mean the clock is simply turned off. GE says unplugging the range for 30 seconds resets the controls.
Test the pan first, because a warped, off-center or empty pan can make the limiter shut an element down. If the pan is flat and one element stays cold, book GE electric range repair near me and name that element.
Not when impact or misuse caused it, which GE has excluded since January 1, 2022. On a JD630 drop-in, glass broken by an uneven countertop opening voids the warranty as well.
Yes. GE keeps some older manuals live: the discontinued JGB660 shares one with the current JGB670. Parts for General Electric stove burners on older ranges come through the same supplier networks, and timing depends on the supplier.
Some GE stove repairs mean pulling the range out. GE recommends a flexible metal connector on gas models, since a hard-piped range cannot be moved after connection. That matters for any GE gas range repair done from behind. The JD630 and JM250 drop-ins are hard-wired and hang from the countertop, so GE requires conduit slack at the junction box to pull them out.
GE’s G-series front-control guides require the included filler trim when the range goes back. A replacement range is range and cooktop installation work, which we also handle.
No. An igniter for a GE gas stove burner is range work, covered here. The oven igniter belongs to the oven cavity and our GE oven page.
No, we do not service over-the-range or countertop microwaves. The hood above a GE range is ours, and it sits with GE wall ovens and cooktops on our GE cooking appliances page.
Send the model number from the tag and say which burner or element stopped. That tells us gas or electric, and which GE platform, before we arrive.
