Kenmore Disposers Still Under Denver Sinks

Kenmore no longer sells garbage disposals. This page covers the Kenmore and Kenmore Elite disposers still in Denver homes, from Kenmore’s own guides and warranty page.

The model number decides where the red reset button sits, how a jam comes free and how many warranty years apply. It also shows whether yours is one of three Kenmore models in a 2017 recall, so read it before you press anything. Once Kenmore’s own checks run out, Kenmore garbage disposal repair is a job for our insured technicians.

What Each Symptom Means in Kenmore’s Guides

Some of what sounds wrong is normal by Kenmore’s account. The rest maps to causes Kenmore names, from the 587 guides unless a line says 175, meaning the models in Kenmore’s 1998 guide.

  • Clicking, slowing or rust-colored marks: all normal on a 587. The impellers click as they swing into place, slowing means more torque, and the marks are mineral deposits from water.
  • Batch-feed unit will not start: on a batch-feed model the stopper is the switch. Only a small slot lined up with the switch plunger starts it; the largest slot lets the sink fill with the motor off.
  • Loud rattle: usually a spoon, a bottle cap or another object inside. With the switch and water off, lift it out with long-handled tongs.
  • Turntable stuck: with the power off, look for an object between the turntable and the grind ring. If nothing is lodged there, Kenmore says there may be internal problems.
  • Stops mid-grind on a 175: with the switch and water off, clear the object. Wait 3 to 5 minutes, then press the small red button on the bottom.
  • Leak at the top: Kenmore starts at the sink flange, meaning an off-center Kenmore garbage disposal gasket, the putty or the tightening. A loose support ring or a bad cushion mount comes next.
  • Leak at the waste elbow: the elbow flange screws are not tight enough.
  • Slow drain on a 175: keep the water running. The 1998 guide says the drain line is probably partly clogged.

Kenmore’s Order of Checks When It Will Not Start

A Kenmore garbage disposal not working at all gets one sequence in both 587 guides, and it starts by cutting the power. We put one step of ours before it: read the label. Where the 175 models in Kenmore’s 1998 guide differ, the step says so.

  1. Read the label (our step): on a 587 it is on the bottom. If the model is 70351, 70361 or the Elite 70413, check the serial against the recall section below first.
  2. Cut the power: unplug the cord, or turn off the wall switch or the breaker.
  3. Clear the opening: take out the stopper, plus the splash guard on a continuous-feed model.
  4. Free the turntable: on a 587, turn it with a wooden broom handle from the sink. On the 175 models in Kenmore’s 1998 guide, work the 1/4-inch hex Wrenchette in the center hole underneath, then remove it before restarting.
  5. Press the reset button: on a 587 it is red, on the side opposite the discharge elbow, near the bottom. Push it until it clicks and stays down. On those 175 models it sits on the bottom; wait 3 to 5 minutes before pressing it.
  6. Check the supply: if the button had tripped, look for a short or broken wire, then the switch, the fuse or the breaker. If all of that is intact and the unit stays silent, it is a job for us.

One Disposer, Three Ways to Write Its Number

Kenmore’s guide prints the number as 587.70351, with a dot. The recall writes the same model as 587-70351E, and parts listings index it as 58770351410. Any of the three tells us which guide applies.

Kenmore put the model and serial label on the bottom of each 587 unit. It told installers to write both numbers down before installation. The older 175 family has a 1998 Kenmore guide, and it does not say where the label sits.

We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts. When a disposer is past repair, we can fit a new one; Kenmore.com no longer sells a Kenmore disposer. How plate prefixes work across the rest of the Kenmore range is on our main Kenmore page.

Kenmore Printed the Warranty Years Model by Model

Each 587 guide lists its term by model number, from two years to nine. Kenmore’s website still prints disposer terms, though it sells no disposer. Its note says some Kenmore food disposers may carry more than two years, and Kenmore Elite food disposers nine.

On that same page, the Kenmore Elite statement reads five years while its disposer note reads nine. The 587.70413 guide also says nine.

The remedy is a replacement, not an in-home repair. With proof of sale, the store that sold it replaces a defective unit, or gives store credit when no replacement is available. Kenmore’s website counts its terms from the original sale.

The 587 guides void the warranty for use outside a private household, and for lye or chemical drain cleaners. Inside the term, the claim goes back to the store that sold it. After it, Kenmore garbage disposal repair is ours.

When to Call Wilson & Myers

Read the label, then run Kenmore’s checks: the power, the turntable and the red button. If it still will not start with all of that intact, Kenmore’s 587 guides point to internal problems that need service or replacement.

That unit is a repair for us. So is a turntable stuck with nothing lodged, and a leak at the sink flange, the cushion mount or the elbow.

Some jobs are not ours. We do not repair a disposer on recall 17129; the recall notice is where to start. Kenmore’s guides send electrical and grounding work to a qualified electrician. A partly clogged drain line is a plumber’s job, not ours.

I usually ask for the label numbers first, because on a 587 they settle the reset spot, the warranty years and the recall question.

Kenmore’s 587 guide asks you to empty the disposer before running the dishwasher. If the dishwasher itself is at fault, our Kenmore dishwasher page takes it from there. A Kenmore refrigerator or ice maker is covered from our Kenmore kitchen appliances page.

Our insured technicians cover the Denver Metro Area. Every paid repair carries our 100-day labor warranty on the work on your invoice. Book a disposer repair online with the label numbers ready.

Recall 17129: Three Kenmore Models to Check

In April 2017, CPSC announced a garbage disposal recall that names three Kenmore models. Inside a recalled unit, a metal part can break off and come out during use, an impact hazard.

We do not repair a disposer on this recall. A listed model is on it only when its serial matches the rule below. The record lists the recalled units, all brands together, as sold from December 2015 through March 2017.

  • Models

    587-70351E, a 3/4 HP disposal; 587-70361E, the 3/4 HP Deluxe; and 587-70413E, the 1 HP Kenmore Elite.

  • Where to look

The model and serial label on the bottom of the disposer.

  • Serial rule

A serial that starts with ZF or AH, or has G in the second position.

  • What to do

Stop using it. In 2017, CPSC announced a free replacement, installed at no cost, through Anaheim Manufacturing; check the notice before relying on it.

  • Not on the recall

    Kenmore 587.70235, 70211 and 70321, and every 175 model.

Kenmore Garbage Disposal Repair FAQ

  • Where is the Kenmore garbage disposal reset button?

On a 587 it is red and sits on the side, opposite the discharge elbow and near the bottom. With the power off, turn the turntable with a wooden broom handle first, then push the button until it clicks and stays down. On the 175 models in Kenmore’s 1998 guide, the red button is on the bottom; wait 3 to 5 minutes before pressing it.

  • Does a Kenmore garbage disposal model 175 clear jams the same way?

No. Kenmore’s 1998 guide for the 175 models it names lists a 1/4-inch hex Wrenchette, packed with the disposer, for the center hole underneath. With the power off, work it back and forth until it turns freely through at least one full revolution. Then take it out before restarting.

The 587 guides never mention a hex socket. With the power off, they free a jam from above with a wooden broom handle.

  • Is my Kenmore disposer on the 2017 recall?

Only if both match. The model must be 587-70351E, 587-70361E or 587-70413E, and the serial must start with ZF or AH, or have G second. Both are on the label on the bottom.

  • Does Kenmore still sell garbage disposals?

No. Kenmore’s site lists no disposer today, though its warranty page still carries the disposer terms. For the Kenmore appliances still on sale, start from our main Kenmore page.

  • What does 587 at the start of the number mean?

It marks the family that the 587 guides and the 2017 recall cover. On its own it does not mean disposer: Kenmore printed 587 on portable and undercounter dishwashers too. Those belong on our Kenmore dishwasher page.

  • Should I oil a Kenmore disposer or pour in drain cleaner?

Neither. The 587 guides say the motor is permanently lubricated and tell owners not to try. They add that lye or chemical drain cleaners corrode metal parts.
