A Kenmore refrigerator whose display works while nothing cools may be in demo mode, which Kenmore says stops cooling on five current models. The plate prefix decides the guide, codes and parts. Our insured, EPA-608 certified technicians handle Kenmore refrigerator repairs across Denver Metro, sealed system included.
Kenmore prints two numbers for one machine. The retail number, such as 46-75665, is the “Model #” on Kenmore’s website. The plate number, 248.7566 and more digits on that model, is on a label inside the fresh-food compartment. That is the one we need.
Kenmore Elite refrigerator repair is now legacy work. Kenmore’s site lists no current Elite refrigerator, but its manual search still serves an Elite guide, for the 795.7205.
Compact and mini refrigerators, the beverage center and the can cooler are sold under the Kenmore name by a licensee. They have no page here, and we repair them too. Kenmore’s statement for licensed compact refrigerators gives one year and replaces a defective unit rather than repairing it.
Refrigerators are one branch of our Kenmore kitchen appliances section, beside the dishwasher and the ice makers built into these cabinets.
The first three digits are the prefix. Each current prefix has its own guide and its own way of reporting trouble, and Kenmore publishes no maker for any of them. We read the plate rather than guess from the badge.
| Prefix | Current models | Style | What the control shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| 899 | 46-61332, 46-71332, 46-62312, 46-72312 | Top freezer | A row of LEDs; a fault lights two at once |
| 896 | 46-71342, 46-71352, 46-61362 | Garage-ready top freezer | A blinking temperature button means a fault |
| 263 | 46-75472 | 15.1 cu ft bottom freezer | Numbered codes, E01 to E11 |
| 248 | 46-51845, 46-75635, 46-75645, 46-75665, 46-75685 | Side-by-side, bottom freezer, French door | Status messages; a version of OF in demo mode |
| 897 | 46-75525, 46-75615 | French door | Two dashes on the 46-75615 when its fresh-food section is off |
Several symptoms that sound like failures are settings in Kenmore’s guides. Ice production, kits and the ice dispenser are on our Kenmore ice maker page.
Kenmore refrigerator troubleshooting starts with Kenmore’s own list. With a Kenmore refrigerator not cooling, reset any cooling-off mode first, then wait out the timers.
Kenmore refrigerator error codes depend on the plate. Among the current guides we read, only the 263’s prints numbered codes, and it has no E04, E05 or E08. The tables also show how to reset Kenmore refrigerator displays stuck in demo mode.
The 896 guides print no code table. A blinking temperature button means a fault, which Kenmore sends to service. On the 46-75615, two dashes on the display mean the fresh-food section is off; holding Refrigerator Temp for 5 to 10 seconds restores it.
For Kenmore refrigerator model 795 troubleshooting, the Kenmore Elite 795.7205 guide prints no code table. Its not-cooling list starts with the control set to OFF, then demo mode, so check both before you book.
On a Kenmore refrigerator model 253, the one guide we found covers the 253.7031 French door. It sends the owner to a service representative to read its flashing number codes. Holding its On/Off pad for 3 seconds stops cooling and shows OFF, with the power still on. That OFF is a setting, not a failure.
| Code | Kenmore's meaning | What Kenmore says to do |
|---|---|---|
| E01, E02, E03, E06, E07 | Sensor warning | Call for service as soon as possible |
| E09 | Freezer compartment is not cold enough | Typical after a long power failure: set it colder or use Accela Freeze; call if it persists |
| E10 | Fridge compartment is not cold enough | Set it colder, clear the air ducts, keep food off the sensor; call if it persists |
| E11 | Fridge compartment is too cold | Check whether Super Cool is on, change the setting, clear the vents; call if it persists |
| LEDs lit | Kenmore's meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| LED1 with LED2 | Refrigerator temperature sensor circuit | A technician; the guide says self-repair voids the warranty |
| LED1 with LED3 | Freezer defrost sensor | A technician |
| LED1 with LED4 | Ambient temperature sensor | A technician |
| LED6 alone | Standby, not a fault: the compressor is off | A short press of the setting button restarts cooling |
| Display | Kenmore's meaning | How to clear it | Models |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double 0F | Demo mode: no cooling | Hold Ice On and Energy Saving together for 3 seconds | 46-75665 |
| OF | Demo mode: no cooling | Hold Alarm and °F/°C together for 3 seconds | 46-51845 |
| Of | Demo mode: no cooling | Hold Alarm and the unit key together for 3 seconds | 46-75685 |
| oF | Demo mode, which survives unplugging | Hold the two keys the guide pictures for 5 seconds | 46-75635; the 46-75645 guide pictures its display |
| dr | A door has been open more than 2 minutes | Close the door | 46-75665, 46-75635, 46-75645 |
| Sb | Sabbath mode; cooling continues, and it ends after 96 hours | Hold Refrigerator Temp and Freezer Temp for 3 seconds | 46-51845 |
| Flashing lock icon | Child Lock is on | Hold Alarm for 3 seconds | 46-51845, 46-75685 |
Below 50°F, only the 896 garage-ready top freezers stay inside their printed room limits. The 899, 248 and 46-75615 guides name a floor of 50°F or warmer. The 46-75472’s Freezer Shield keeps frozen food frozen down to a 5°F room. So we check the room before we condemn a part.
Among the current Kenmore guides we read, only the 46-75472’s mentions altitude: the model is not intended for use above 6,500 feet.
| Family or model | What the guide prints |
|---|---|
| 899 top freezers | 50°F to 100°F, indoor household use only |
| 896: 46-71342, 46-71352 | 45°F to 110°F; below 50°F, set the freezer control to Coldest |
| 896: 46-61362 | 38°F to 110°F |
| 263: 46-75472 | Freezer Shield holds frozen food down to a 5°F room |
| 248: 46-51845, 46-75645, 46-75685 | 55°F to 110°F |
| 248: 46-75635 | 50°F to 109.4°F |
| 248: 46-75665 | 61°F to 109°F |
| 897: 46-75615 | 50°F to 110°F; colder than that, fresh food can freeze |
The 899 guide names R600a, a flammable refrigerant, and reserves sealed-system repair for trained service personnel. That work is ours: compressor, condenser, evaporator and tubing.
A Kenmore refrigerator compressor that will not start right after a power cut may be waiting out its delay. Kenmore calls that pause normal. The Kenmore Elite refrigerator compressor in the 795.7205 is a linear design, and we confirm a compressor fault before any sealed-system work starts.
What owners call the Kenmore refrigerator thermostat is, on the 899 and 263 families, a set of sensors that Kenmore’s codes name. We test those sensors first. Kenmore refrigerator control board replacement comes only after they pass. On the 795.7205, a Kenmore Elite refrigerator control board gets the same order, since its guide prints no codes.
Kenmore refrigerator door gasket replacement comes when cleaning and leveling no longer seal the door. A Kenmore refrigerator door seal only works on a door that closes.
We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts, and we fit OEM parts when the supplier has the right one. We order by the full plate number.
Kenmore’s warranty page gives current refrigerators one year on the appliance, with proof of the original sale. The 899 guide spells it out: free repair, or replacement if it cannot be repaired. Non-household use cuts most coverage to 90 days.
Some exclusions change a visit. Kenmore excludes filters and bulbs, installation its own agents did not do, and a missing or altered plate. The 46-75615 guide excludes the water-line installation, and the 899 guide says self-repair voids the warranty.
While coverage runs, Kenmore refrigerator service for a covered defect goes to Kenmore’s warranty service, through the store that sold it. Once it ends, the repair is ours.
Kenmore PRO refrigerators, no longer sold, carry five years on the sealed system and ten on the linear compressor, labor excluded after year one. The Kenmore Elite 795.7205 guide printed five years on the sealed system and ten on the compressor. We found no current Kenmore source that says whether the Elite terms still apply.
Run the checks above first. If a sensor code, an LED pair or a blinking button appears, the rest is ours. So are E09 to E11 that persist after Kenmore’s steps. So is a Kenmore refrigerator freezer not working once modes and timers are ruled out.
We take the sealed system, sensors and control, door gaskets and the water supply. When an owner tells us “my Kenmore refrigerator is not cooling”, we ask for the plate number. I usually read the plate and the display before a panel comes off, because Kenmore’s own guides list modes that stop cooling.
Each Kenmore fridge repair we book starts with that number, which decides the guide and the parts. Every paid repair carries our 100-day labor warranty on the work on your invoice. Check the recalls below against your plate first, then book a repair with the plate model number and what the display shows.
We found no CPSC recall for a current Kenmore refrigerator. Three older ones are on record. On the 05213 Trio, the data plate is inside the fresh-food section of the door.
If your plate matches a card below and the record covers your serial, we do not repair the unit; the recall remedy comes first. To check a serial, search the record number at cpsc.gov.
Kenmore Elite Trio three-door bottom freezers: 21 cu ft 795.7519240, 795.7519340, 795.7519440, 795.7519640 and 795.7519940; 25 cu ft 795.7554×40 and 795.7555×40. Serials run 405KR to 410KR, and not every unit in that range is included. A condenser fan motor part can short and overheat, a fire hazard. The record names a free in-home repair; contact Kenmore’s recall line or LG.
Kenmore Elite TRIO models in the 596.73502, 596.73503, 596.73504 and 596.73509 series, within serial ranges the notice lists. A screw inside the fresh-food compartment can pierce wiring insulation, a shock hazard. The remedy was a free in-home inspection, with defective units replaced. Contact Kenmore’s recall line with your full model and serial.
Side-by-sides 596.9530820, 596.9530850, 596.9530880, 596.9535610, 596.9535650 and 596.95356800, serials 9304000000 to 9409156208. A light-cover screw could touch a hidden wire, a shock hazard. The 1994 remedy was a screw-replacement kit. Search your full model number at cpsc.gov for the contact today.
Why is my Kenmore refrigerator not cooling?
Start with the display, not the compressor. Demo mode on the 248 family stops all cooling while the panel looks normal; LED6 on the 899 means standby. For a Kenmore Elite refrigerator not cooling, the 795.7205 guide lists the control set to OFF first and demo mode second.
If no mode is on and the room is inside the guide’s range, book a visit.
Where is the reset button on a Kenmore refrigerator?
It depends on the plate. On the 899 top freezers, the setting button is the nearest thing. A 3-second hold stops the compressor and lights LED6; a short press restarts cooling.
Elsewhere, Kenmore prints key holds that leave a mode, shown in the tables above. Those holds are how to reset a Kenmore refrigerator that stopped cooling without a fault.
What does Ultra Ice mean on a Kenmore refrigerator?
On the Kenmore Elite 795.7205 bottom freezer, Ultra Ice raises ice production for 24 hours. The same key also ends demo mode. That mode stops all cooling and shows OFF. Open a fridge door and hold Ultra Ice with Refrigerator Temp for five seconds.
Who makes Kenmore refrigerator models today?
Kenmore publishes no maker for its current prefixes, 248, 263, 896, 897 and 899. We do not guess one. For a repair, the full plate number tells us which Kenmore guide, codes and parts apply.
How old is my Kenmore refrigerator?
The plate gives a first answer. Current Kenmore guides print 248, 263, 896, 897 or 899 before the dot. Older plates carry others, such as 106, 253, 363, 596 and 795. A Kenmore refrigerator model 106 is one of those older plates; book with every digit, since we order parts by the full number.
Why is my Kenmore refrigerator leaking water?
On dispenser models, start with the filter: the 46-75665 guide says to stop using one that leaks after a change. On the 46-75615, the water-line installation is outside the warranty.
A Kenmore Elite refrigerator leaking water is ours to trace on site; book with the full plate number.
Can a Kenmore refrigerator repairman near me do warranty work?
We do not. A covered defect goes to Kenmore’s warranty service, through the store that sold it. After coverage ends, or for a fault it does not cover, the repair is ours.
What should I have ready for Kenmore refrigerator repair near me?
The plate model number with its prefix, and what the display shows. Most Kenmore guides we read put that label inside the fresh-food compartment. On the 897 French doors, leave the Tech Sheet behind the base grille in place. Kenmore says not to remove it.
Tell us the plate model number, all three prefix digits included, and what the display shows. That decides which Kenmore guide and codes apply.
