Kenmore’s own lineup no longer includes a freezer. This page covers the Kenmore and Kenmore Elite uprights and chests still in Denver homes, from Kenmore’s own records and guides. Your plate number decides which guide applies, and every freezer Kenmore.com still documents carries a 253 number.
A cold garage is not the fault on these models. Kenmore’s guides say 32°F and below will not affect operation. Past the owner checks below, Kenmore freezer repair is work for our EPA-608 certified technicians.
Kenmore freezer troubleshooting starts by telling expected behavior from a fault. Several signs that worry owners are normal in the guides for the 253 models, and a few go straight to a technician.
Kenmore freezer model 253 troubleshooting starts at the outlet in all three guides. A Kenmore freezer compressor not running is a power or control question first, by Kenmore’s list. The checks below also cover a Kenmore freezer not freezing.
Only the Kenmore Elite uprights on Kenmore.com, 46-27002 and 46-27003, carry an alarm table in their guide. Except during an outage, a red alarm light comes on with every alarm. Kenmore calls SY CE and SY CF an operational error and names no failed part. So we test before ordering anything.
For a Kenmore freezer alarm reset, the table gives one button: ALARM OFF stops the beep. A Hi that stays with the power connected still goes to a technician.
In Sabbath mode, shown as Sb, the Elite’s lights and panel do not respond. It stays in Sabbath after a power failure, though its high-temperature alarm still sounds.
The plain Kenmore models on the 253.22042 guide print no codes. That guide names a Temp Alarm, Express Chill and Sabbath, but not which of its models have them. To leave Sabbath there, hold MODE and CONTROL LOCK for 3 seconds. The chest 253.17512 has no codes and no alarm at all.
| Display | What Kenmore says it means | What Kenmore tells you to do |
|---|---|---|
| Cabinet temperature | Normal operation | Nothing |
| Snowflake | Express Chill is running | Nothing; it ends after 72 hours |
| Temperature alternating with Hi | Freezer temperature too high | Check the power is connected and call a service technician; ALARM OFF stops the beep |
| Door Ajar indicator | Door open for more than 5 minutes | Close the door; ALARM OFF stops the beep |
| SY CE | Operational error | Call a service technician |
| SY CF | Operational error | Call a service technician |
| Power Fail indicator | Power failure, with the hours off counted up to 50 | ALARM OFF stops the beep |
| Sb | Sabbath mode is on | Hold Options and ^ for 5 seconds to leave it |
| power off | Power Off mode, with cooling and lights off | Hold set for 3 seconds to restore |
Kenmore’s site lists these freezers by retail item number, such as 46-22042. The plate on the freezer shows 253.22042 instead, followed by more digits. Parts are listed by that full plate number, suffix included, and one retail number can cover several: 25322042410, 25322042411 and 25322042412.
Kenmore’s manual search asks for the full number too, at least 11 characters long. A Kenmore freezer model 253 door seal is ordered the same way, not by the 46 number.
On the uprights, and on the chests in the 253.22042 guide, Kenmore puts the serial plate inside the cabinet. On the 253.17512 chest, it sits on the right outside wall. Clean it with soap and water only, and leave it on when you peel off labels. That plate matters beyond parts: Kenmore’s warranty excludes service when it is missing, altered or cannot easily be read.
Older Kenmore freezers carry other prefixes, such as 106, 183, 198, 564 or 757, and we found none of them documented on Kenmore.com now. We read whatever plate you have before ordering.
We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts. How the prefix works across other Kenmore appliances is on our main Kenmore page.
| Retail number | Line | Cabinet and size | Defrost | Plate number begins |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 46-22042 | Kenmore | Upright, 20.2 cu ft | Automatic | 253.22042 |
| 46-21042 | Kenmore | Upright, 20.9 cu ft | Manual | 253.21042 |
| 46-22742 | Kenmore | Upright, 16.6 cu ft | Automatic | 253.22742 |
| 46-27002 | Kenmore Elite | Upright, 20.5 cu ft | Automatic | 253.27002 |
| 46-27003 | Kenmore Elite | Upright, 20.5 cu ft, stainless | Automatic | 253.27003 |
| 46-17512 | Kenmore | Chest, 14.8 cu ft | By hand, per its guide | 253.17512 |
The guides for these six freezers carry Kenmore’s original terms. The plain Kenmore uprights and chests had one year. The Elite guide gave one year on its other non-consumable parts and five years on the sealed refrigerant system.
Use outside a private household cut those terms to 90 days, and to one year on the Elite’s sealed system. All three guides also exclude motor damage from running on low voltage. The guides carry print codes 1408 and 1706, read as 2014 and 2017.
Freezers sold under the Kenmore license have a separate statement on Kenmore’s warranty page: two years from the date of sale. If your receipt falls inside a term, start with Kenmore’s warranty service. Past the term, the repair is ours.
Run Kenmore’s checks first: the outlet and breaker, the control, the door seal and the load. Give an upright a full day to cool after it has been unplugged.
A Kenmore freezer not working after those checks is ours. So is a Kenmore freezer not cooling a full day later. On an Elite, a Hi that stays with the power connected, SY CE or SY CF all mean a visit.
On the 253.17512 chest, a dark Power On light or LED with power present is ours too. A Kenmore freezer door gasket replacement is ours once the old one is cracked or fits poorly. So is a Kenmore freezer leaking water when no defrost is under way.
I usually start with the plate and the display, because together they decide which Kenmore guide applies. We also test the control before any Kenmore freezer thermostat replacement.
The sealed refrigerant system is the part Kenmore’s Elite guide covered for five years. Work on it means handling refrigerant, and our insured technicians are EPA-608 certified. Every paid repair carries our 100-day labor warranty on the work on your invoice.
If a Kenmore refrigerator, ice maker or dishwasher needs us as well, our Kenmore kitchen appliances page covers them.
For Kenmore freezer repair near me, anywhere in the Denver Metro Area, have the full plate number ready. Note what the display or lights show, then book a freezer repair online.
Where is the model number on a model 253 Kenmore freezer?
Inside the cabinet on the uprights and on the chests in the 253.22042 guide. On the 253.17512 chest, it is on the right outside wall. Read the number that starts with 253, plus every digit after it. The 46 number Kenmore.com shows is only the retail number.
Can a Kenmore freezer sit in an unheated garage?
Yes. Kenmore’s guides for these models say “Temperatures of 32°F (0°C) and below will NOT affect operation”, and they advise against extra compressor heaters. They set the upper limit at 110°F (43°C) and ask for 3 inches of air on every side.
How to adjust Kenmore freezer temperature on these models?
On the knob models in the 253.22042 guide, the Kenmore freezer thermostat is an electromechanical control. It sits inside the cabinet on an upright and on the left outside wall of a chest. Turn it, then allow several hours before adjusting again.
The 253.17512 chest has its knob on the right outside wall; turn it toward Coldest. The Elite uses an electronic panel outside the cabinet, with arrow buttons: up for warmer, down for colder.
Where is the reset button on a Kenmore freezer?
Before looking for a Kenmore freezer reset button location, run Kenmore’s own first checks: the outlet, the control and the door. If an Elite display reads power off, hold set for 3 seconds to bring it back.
What happens to a Kenmore freezer in a power outage?
Keep the door or lid shut: the guides say food stays frozen at least 24 hours that way. The temperature alarm these guides describe runs on household power, so it cannot sound during an outage. The Elite counts the hours without power, up to 50, and shows them with power fail.
My Kenmore freezer is not freezing: what should I check first?
Check the outlet, the control setting, the door seal and the load, in the order above. Frost on a manual-defrost model is upkeep, not a fault. On a frost-free model that stays warm, our guide to a freezer not freezing explains what fails inside. That repair is ours.
Is frost inside a Kenmore freezer a fault?
Not on a manual-defrost model. Kenmore labels the 46-21042 upright that way, and the 253.17512 chest guide gives hand-defrost steps. There, Kenmore freezer defrost is the owner’s job once frost reaches 1/4 to 1/2 inch.
Unplug the freezer, then open the Kenmore freezer drain plug inside the cabinet. An upright drains through a tube under the base panel; a chest also has an outside plug.
Has a Kenmore freezer ever been recalled?
We found no CPSC recall of a standalone Kenmore freezer. A fault on one of these models is a repair question, so the checks above come first.
Does this page cover the freezer in my Kenmore refrigerator?
No. A top-freezer, bottom-freezer, French door or side-by-side Kenmore belongs on our Kenmore refrigerator page. A fault in its ice maker goes to our Kenmore ice maker page instead.
Have the full plate number ready, and note what the display or lights show. That tells us which Kenmore guide applies.
