Every current Kenmore dishwasher is a built-in. Its plate prefix, 263, 405 or 990, decides its fault codes and what Kenmore calls normal, such as water left below a 263’s filters. Wilson & Myers handles Kenmore dishwasher repair across the Denver Metro Area with insured technicians, on current and older models alike.
Kenmore sells each dishwasher under a retail item number such as 22-14705. The technician needs the plate number. On that machine it reads 263.14705320: prefix, base, color digit and suffix.
On a 263, Kenmore’s drawing puts the rating plate on the right side of the tub opening, near the bottom. A 990’s sits inside, left or right of the door. The 405 guide does not say. Check the door edges and the tub wall by the opening.
Kenmore names no maker for its current dishwasher platforms, and we do not guess one: we work from the Kenmore guide for your prefix. Kenmore refrigerators and their ice makers sit beside this dishwasher on our Kenmore kitchen appliances page. Ranges, washers and dryers start from our Kenmore page.
Most 405 cycles pause about 5 minutes near the start to soak, and a 990 may pause several times. How long does a Kenmore dishwasher run? Kenmore lists 122 to 145 minutes for a 263 Normal cycle, and up to 191 minutes on a 990.
Here is where normal ends.
The current guides describe no Kenmore dishwasher reset that clears a fault code. Kenmore dishwasher troubleshooting there is a short list of owner checks; we gather the 263, 405 and 990 lists into our own order. A Kenmore Elite dishwasher not starting gets the 263 checks: power, the house fuse, an open tap, a closed door and clean filters.
Three unrelated code sets sit behind one badge, and the plate prefix picks yours. Kenmore Elite dishwasher error codes are the 263 set. All Kenmore dishwasher error codes below come from the guide for their plate.
One warning: E2 means tub water level too high on a 405, but a fault in the inlet valve on a 990.
| Code | Kenmore's meaning | What Kenmore has you do |
|---|---|---|
| FF | Water inlet system failure | Check that the tap is open, then clean the filter in the inlet hose. Call for service if it returns. |
| F1 | Overflow | Unplug the machine, close the tap and call for service. |
| F2 | Inability to discharge water | Cancel the cycle and check the drain hose and filters. Call for service if it returns. |
| F3 | Continuous water input | Close the tap and call for service. |
| F5 | Pressure system failure | Call for service. |
| F6 | Faulty heater sensor | Call for service. |
| F7 | Overheating | Call for service. |
| F8 | Heater error | Call for service. |
| F9 | Divisor position error | Call for service. |
| HI | High voltage failure | Call for service. |
| Code | Kenmore's meaning | What Kenmore has you do |
|---|---|---|
| E1 | Water flow too low, or a supply pressure problem | Turn the water on and check the drain hose, then contact service. The guide gives 20 to 80 psi in one place, 20 to 100 in another. |
| E2 | Tub water level too high | Check the drain hose, then contact service. |
| E4 | Overflow or leak sensor activated | Turn the water off and clear any blockage in the filters. If the tub is dry, contact service. |
| Ed | Communication exception or issue | The boards lost their signal for over 20 seconds. Contact service. |
| Code | Kenmore's meaning | What Kenmore has you do |
|---|---|---|
| E1 | Abnormal water inlet or water shortage | Check that the faucet is on, the inlet pipe is clear and pressure is 0.04 to 1.0 MPa. Then call for service. |
| E2 | Fault in inlet valve | Call for service if it persists. |
| E4 | Overflow fault | Level the machine and clear any bend or blockage in the drain pipe. A leak, outside water or the wrong detergent can cause it too. Call for service if it persists. |
| E5 | Communication failure | Call for service if it persists. |
| E6 | Failure in NTC, a term Kenmore does not explain | Call for service if it persists. |
| E11 | Failure in Auto-open door | Call for service if it persists. |
| E14 | Failure in communication of display board | The display board or its cable has failed. Call for service if it persists. |
We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts, and we fit OEM parts when the supplier has the right one. We order by the full plate number.
No code on the three tables names a Kenmore dishwasher pump or motor. When a drain code returns with the hose and filters clear, the Kenmore dishwasher drain pump is one part we test. The Kenmore Elite dishwasher motor gets tested too.
On a 263, F8 reads heater error and F6 a faulty heater sensor. So Kenmore dishwasher heating element replacement follows a test. On a 990, E2 points straight to the Kenmore dishwasher water inlet valve.
Ed on a 405 names the display and main boards; E14 on a 990 names the display board and its cable. We replace a Kenmore dishwasher control board only after testing it. No 263 code names a board, so Kenmore Elite dishwasher control board replacement starts with a test too. We also handle Kenmore dishwasher door seal replacement.
The 263.1458#, 263.1460# and 263.1462# guides give one year on the whole dishwasher: a free repair, or a replacement if it cannot be repaired.
The stainless steel tub and inner door panel carry a lifetime term against rust-through leaks. Kenmore’s warranty page dates it to purchases from February 4, 2018. After year one, Kenmore supplies the part once its warranty service confirms the rust-through, and you pay the labor. We found no Kenmore text saying whether the term covers the 405’s hybrid tub.
Kenmore Elite dishwasher repair runs on different terms. Kenmore’s warranty page gives the Elite models two years on parts, installed free in year one, and five years on the racks against rust. The 22-14682 listings print only one year of parts and labor, and the Elite guide prints none, so ask Kenmore which applies.
Kenmore excludes filters, visits to clean or to explain the machine, and damage from wrong detergents. A missing or unreadable model and serial plate rules out warranty service. Leave it in place.
While a term runs, a covered fault goes to Kenmore’s warranty service, through the store that sold it. Outside the terms, the repair is ours.
If the checks above clear nothing, the fault is past what Kenmore asks of owners. A Kenmore dishwasher not working at that point is ours to diagnose. Check the recalls below against your plate first.
That covers every 263 code except a cleared FF or F2, and any 405 or 990 code that keeps returning. Once the filters and spray arms are clean, a Kenmore dishwasher not spraying water is ours too. So is a Kenmore dishwasher not cleaning.
A front leak with no code is our job. We check the Kenmore dishwasher door gasket and the leveling. A Kenmore Elite dishwasher door latch that will not catch is ours to replace. So is a Kenmore dishwasher not turning on with power at the breaker.
I usually ask for the plate before the code. E2 sends me to the drain hose on a 405 and to the inlet valve on a 990, so the prefix changes the visit.
Our insured technicians cover the Denver Metro Area. Every paid repair carries our 100-day labor warranty on the work on your invoice. For Kenmore dishwasher repair near me, book online with the plate number and the code on the display.
No current Kenmore dishwasher, on a 263, 405 or 990 plate, appears in the recall records we checked. The five below cover older prefixes, a Kenmore dishwasher model 587 among them.
We do not repair a unit a recall covers, so check your plate against each card and follow the steps on the one that matches. No record says whether its remedy is still offered today.
Models 630.13003, 630.13023, 630.13993 and 630.14003, serials starting 010 or 013. Both numbers are on the top side of the inner door panel. The power cord can overheat, a fire hazard. Stop using it; the record sent owners to BSH Home Appliances for a free inspection and repair.
The notice lists 22 Kenmore 363 series sold 1997 to 2001, such as 363.1438 and 363.1655, with listed serial letter pairs. Both numbers are inside the tub on the front left side; check them against the notice at cpsc.gov. Rinse aid can leak onto internal wiring, a fire hazard. Stop using it; the record sent owners to GE for a free repair or a rebate.
Plastic tall-tub series 665.143, 665.160, 665.163, 665.170 and 665.173, serials FR2200000 to FR4599999, though not every unit in that range. Both numbers are on a tag inside the tub, near the left side of the door opening. A wiring defect can make the wash motor overheat, a fire hazard. Stop using it, switch off its breaker and ask Whirlpool whether yours is included in the free in-home repair.
Models beginning 665, such as 665.1665591, serials FA2400000 to FA5299999 or FB0100000 to FB1899999. The plate is on the right front edge of the tub, inside the door. Door-latch wiring can overheat, a fire hazard. Stop using it and leave the door unlatched; the record named Whirlpool for a free repair.
The notice lists 21 Kenmore 587 models made February 1990 to October 1992, six of them only within listed serial ranges. Both numbers are on the inside right door seal of the tub. A leak can short the timer, which can catch fire. Stop using it, switch off its power or leave the door unlatched, and search your full model number at cpsc.gov for the remedy.
How do I reset a Kenmore dishwasher?
Kenmore prints no fault-reset sequence for any current model, so how to reset a Kenmore dishwasher depends on what needs resetting. Here is how to reset Kenmore dishwasher settings on a 263.1462# to 263.1469# model: hold Extra Dry for 3 seconds. Its menu includes FS, a factory reset.
On a 990, holding Start for 5 seconds cancels the cycle and drains for 60 seconds.
Where is the filter on a Kenmore dishwasher?
Inside the tub, and the steps depend on the plate. On a 263, turn the coarse, micro and mesh filters counter-clockwise and lift them out, at least once a month. A 405 has three filters: cylinder, fine and micro. The cylinder comes out with a quarter turn counter-clockwise.
Why is my Kenmore dishwasher not draining?
First check that the cycle finished. All three guides list an unfinished cycle as a cause. A Kenmore Elite dishwasher not draining can show F2, and its guide points to the drain hose and filters.
How to drain Kenmore dishwasher water varies by plate. On a 990, hold Start for 5 seconds and it drains for 60. If a Kenmore dishwasher won’t drain after the hose, filter and disposer checks, it needs a technician.
Can I run a diagnostic on my Kenmore dishwasher?
Not from anything Kenmore publishes. The 263, 405 and 990 guides print no diagnostic, test or service mode. Their button sequences are settings. The display code, read against your prefix’s table, is the diagnosis Kenmore gives owners.
How old is my Kenmore dishwasher?
For a current 263, 405 or 990 model, the receipt is the best record. Kenmore’s warranty asks for proof of sale anyway. On older plates, the prefix sets how the serial encodes the date, and those codes repeat, so the decade is judged from the machine.
What if my Kenmore dishwasher is a model 665?
Kenmore dishwasher model 665 troubleshooting starts with the recalls. Two CPSC recalls cover model 665 Kenmore dishwasher series, and both send owners to Whirlpool.
On the 665s in the 1996 recall, the plate is on the right front edge of the tub. On the tall tubs in the 2005 recall, it is a tag near the left of the door opening. We found no Kenmore use and care guide for a 665. A model 665 that won’t start is diagnosed at the machine.
Is it worth repairing a Kenmore dishwasher?
The plate, the code and the warranty decide it. Every dishwasher in Kenmore’s catalog today carries a 263, 405 or 990 plate. Kenmore’s warranty gives a stainless tub a lifetime rust-through term. If you replace it instead, our dishwasher installation service can fit the new one.
Tell us the code on the display and the plate number, prefix included. On a Kenmore, one code can mean two different faults.
