Viking Range Ovens in Denver Metro: What Decides the Fix

Viking oven repair starts with the range around it, because the line decides the fuel, the self-clean and the signals. We repair the ovens of Viking gas, dual fuel and electric ranges across the Denver Metro Area. One fact first. When broil does not work, Viking’s own table names a knob turned too far, not a part.

Gas or Electric, Self-Clean or Not: Viking Ovens by Line

Whether a Viking range oven self-cleans depends on its line, and so does the cycle length. Viking gas oven repair starts there: three of the four current gas oven families have no self-clean at all.

The ovens of the all-induction ranges, VIR5304, VIR5364, VIR5484 and RVIR330, sit outside what we service. On a Tuscany TVDR4814I or TVDR6616I the ovens are ours, while the induction section sits outside what we service.

Burners, the griddle and the range as a whole live on our Viking range page. Built-in wall ovens are separate machines with their own Viking wall oven page. Cooktops and hoods sit with them under our Viking cooking appliances.

On the gas ovens, Viking’s spec sheets pair the bake burner and broiler with SureSpark ignition. A Viking oven igniter there belongs to that system, and no current manual describes one that glows.

What the Plate Tells You About the Oven

The model and serial plate is the range’s own. On the VGR, VDR and VER5304 ranges and the 3 Series, it sits under the control panel. On a VGIC it is on the burner box’s left wall, under the left grates, and on a Tuscany behind the storage drawer.

The serial’s first six digits give the build date as month, day, year. Viking Professional oven repair starts here too, because Professional appears on current and older manuals alike. A Viking Professional oven not heating may be a current 5 or 7 Series or a legacy unit, and the checks differ.

  • VGR, VGIC and RVGR3302: Viking titles these gas ranges, so the oven burns gas. Only the RVGR3302 self-cleans.
  • VDR, RVDR3302 and TVDR: dual fuel, with gas burners on top and an electric oven below.
  • VER5304 and RVER3301: electric throughout.
  • 48-inch gas, VGR5484, VGIC5482 and VGR7482: the small left oven has one 15,000 BTU burner and no broiler. On the 5 Series VGR it bakes only.
  • 48-inch dual fuel: the left oven of a VDR5484 or VDR7482 adds a PROOF setting.

Oven Lights and Knob Rings, With No Published Code List

None of Viking’s ten current range manuals publishes a fault-code list for the oven. They name no Viking oven temperature sensor and print no owner calibration. A temperature that drifts with the knob set right is therefore a service call. The ovens speak through indicator lights, and through knob rings on the 7 Series.

A Viking oven not heating up with its indicator light on is, in Viking’s words, operating properly. It resumes heating once it has cooled. That row appears in the gas and dual fuel manuals of the 5, 7 and 3 Series and Tuscany, not the VER5304 or RVER3301.

Dual fuel rings pulse out of step, then turn solidPreheating, then at temperature

Dual fuel: rings back to Viking blue after a cleanThe door has unlocked; turn both knobs off
Backlight red, oven rings flashingAn error; Viking publishes no list of the flash codes, so it is a service call
48-inch dual fuel: the second oven’s temperature light stays offThe other oven is cleaning; only one self-cleans at a time
  • 5 Series VDR and RVER3301: the clean light comes on, the latch engages within 30 seconds, then the oven light follows. The door lock light shows at cleaning heat and stays on until the oven cools.
  • RVGR3302 and RVDR3302: the latch engages within 30 seconds of the clean light, and the oven light comes on. The clean light stays on until the cycle ends and the oven cools.
  • VER5304: the Oven Clean Light shows the lock has begun. The Oven Cycle Light then shows the clean has started, and cycles with the heat.

Before You Book: Viking’s Own Oven Checks

Several Viking oven problems in the tables of today’s manuals are settings, not parts, so start with these. A Viking oven not working at all is a power question first. Viking says to have an electrician check the breaker, wiring and fuses.

  1. Broil does not work: Viking’s one listed cause is a temperature knob turned too far past the broil position. Set it on Broil; every current range manual prints this.
  2. Self-clean will not start: the door is not shut tight enough for the automatic latch to lock. That row is in the 7 Series, RVGR3302, VER5304 and RVER3301 manuals.
  3. Still dirty after a clean: the temperature knob was not turned all the way past Clean until it stopped. The 7 Series, RVGR3302 and RVER3301 manuals give this cause.
  4. Door locked after a clean: the latch releases once the oven reaches a safe temperature, about 30 minutes after the cycle ends. Viking prints this for the 7 Series, VER5304 and RVER3301.
  5. 7 Series dual fuel door locked after a canceled clean: turn both knobs to SELF-CLEAN until the bezel pulses yellow, then both to OFF. The door unlocks when the solid yellow goes out.
  6. Power failure during a clean: on the VER5304 and RVER3301 the door stays locked. Wait for power, let the door unlock by itself, turn the controls off, then restart.
  7. Slow preheat: TruConvec preheats slightly longer by design on the VDR, RVDR3302, RVER3301 and VER5304. A supply below 240 VAC or a much colder room also lengthens preheat there.
  • Broiler cycling

During a long closed-door broil, the broil burner on the 5 and 7 Series gas, VGIC and RVGR3302 can switch on and off. Viking calls that normal.

  • Fan noise

The high-speed Convection Broil fan on the 5 and 7 Series VDR is normal. On every self-cleaning line, the fan also runs for the whole clean. The RVGR3302’s Convection Broil runs the burner 3 minutes, then the fan 1 minute, in turns.

  • First cleans

Smoke and odor at the first self-cleans come from the insulation’s binder curing, and stop once it has cured. Viking prints this for the VDR, RVGR3302, RVER3301 and VER5304.

  • Tuscany cavity

The stainless steel cavity darkens with heat by design, and Viking says that does not affect performance.

  • Tuscany bake

Bake takes two steps: set PREHEAT and the temperature, let it preheat, then turn the selector to BAKE and load the food.

Legacy Viking Ovens: Gas Self-Clean and Showroom Mode

Older Viking ranges can behave differently from current ones, even where the model strings look alike. The previous 5 Series gas generation, VGR530 to VGR560, has no self-clean, and its manual allows a fume-free oven cleaner. The current 5 Series VGR manual forbids commercial oven cleaners inside the oven.

The discontinued Professional VGSC530, VGSC536 and VGSC548 had a gas self-clean oven, with a cycle of about 2-1/2 hours. The older Professional dual fuel VDSC530 to VDSC560 cleaned in about 3-1/2 hours. On both, after a power failure mid-clean, wait for power and for the door to unlock, then restart.

A legacy electronic-control range that lights up but will not heat may simply be in SHOWROOM mode.

When to Call Wilson & Myers

If you smell gas, Viking’s instruction comes before any booking. Do not try to light any appliance, and do not touch any electrical switch or use any phone in your building. Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone and follow its instructions. If you cannot reach the supplier, call the fire department.

Call us once the knob, the door and the power check out and the oven still will not heat, broil or finish a clean. On the RVGR3302 and RVER3301, Viking says to cancel a clean and call for service if the cooling fan does not start. That fan, the bake burner, the broiler, the elements and the door latch are ours.

I usually ask for the model number before anything else, because a 5 Series gas oven has no self-clean to fail. We cover current and legacy Viking range ovens, gas, dual fuel and electric. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts, and fit OEM parts when the supplier has the right one.

In warranty, Viking oven service goes to Viking’s warranty service first, and we do not repair a range inside a recall. Outside both, our insured technicians handle Viking oven service across the Denver Metro Area. Every paid repair carries our 100-day labor warranty on the work on your invoice. Book a repair online with the model number and what the lights are doing.

Recalls That Reach the Oven

Two Viking range recalls touch the oven, and Viking’s recall page checks both by model and serial. We do not repair a recalled range; Viking’s free repair comes first. Model lists and date codes are on our Viking range page.

  • 2022, CPSC 22082

On certain 5 Series VGR and VGIC gas ranges built August 10 to December 1, 2021, the bake and broil burner tubing can separate. Viking says the ovens and griddle should not be used until its free repair. The top burners stay usable, and dual fuel VDR ranges are not affected.

  • 2015, CPSC 15144

On certain older VGIC, VGCC and VGSC gas ranges, the oven can turn on by itself after liquid seeps into the control panel area. Keep liquid away from behind the panel and landing ledge. If liquid gets in, or the oven turns on alone, stop using it and switch off the breaker until Viking’s free repair.

  • An oven heating on its own

On an older Viking gas range, that is the 2015 recall’s own symptom. Check the model and serial with Viking before you book a repair.

Viking’s Warranty on Oven Parts

Viking’s current warranty sheet covers the whole range, oven included, for two years of parts and labor. Inside that window, Viking’s warranty service does the work. Damage from anyone else’s repair is excluded.

In years three to five the cover is the part only, and the owner pays labor, shipping and handling. For a gas oven that means the bake and broil burners, minus ignition systems. For an electric oven it means the bake, broil and convection elements.

The 7 Series, VGIC and RVGR3302 manuals print an older text covering oven burners and bake elements without that exclusion. Confirm your term with Viking, and ask too how the ignition exclusion applies to your oven’s igniter.

Cover passes to a later owner only with a home sale, and a range bought used or refurbished has none. Outside the cover, the repair is ours.

Viking Oven Repair FAQ

  • Why won't my Viking oven broil?

Viking’s tables give one cause in every current range manual: the temperature knob is rotated too far past the broil position. Turn it back to Broil and try again.

If it still will not broil with the knob set right, the broiler or its ignition is ours to test.

  • Is there Viking oven repair near me in the Denver Metro Area?

Yes. Our insured technicians repair Viking range ovens in your kitchen anywhere in the Denver Metro Area, current and legacy. Other Viking appliances in your home are on our Viking page.

  • What should I check with a Viking stove oven not working at all?

Power first: Viking’s tables send a range that does nothing to the breaker, wiring and fuses, checked by an electrician. On an older electronic-control VDSC range, SHOWROOM mode also stops the heat while the display works.

  • How hot does a Viking self-clean get, and how long does it take?

Viking’s FAQ says up to 750°F, for 3 to 3-1/2 hours depending on the model. The manuals say about 3-1/2 hours on the 5 and 7 Series VDR, VER5304 and RVER3301, and about 2-1/2 on the RVGR3302 and RVDR3302.

Follow the manual for your line. Every self-clean manual also says not to touch the oven’s exterior once the cycle starts.

  • Where can I get Viking oven repair service near me for a Tuscany or 3 Series range?

Right here. We repair the ovens of every current Viking range line we take, Tuscany and 3 Series included, plus legacy Professional ovens. Tell us the model number, since a current Tuscany never self-cleans and a current 3 Series always does.
