Which Viking freezer do you have? Viking’s freezers come only as Veil all-freezer columns, freezer drawers under a Veil or 3 Series refrigerator, or a 5 Series side-by-side’s freezer side. Viking freezer repair across Denver Metro is work for our EPA-608 certified technicians.
One alarm is not the fault it looks like. Viking names a power failure on the circuit as a common cause of the RVFFR336’s High Temp Error. The alarm clears once the freezer is back below 16°F. If it keeps returning, that is a service call.
Viking makes no chest, upright or garage freezer. Standalone Viking ice machines, wine units, refrigerators and the dishwasher each have a page in our Viking kitchen appliances section.
A Veil model spells out the unit: FDFZIC, a 7, a width code from 180 to 360, then L or R for the hinge. Its display shows the serial under Info System. For a later owner with no proof of purchase or registration, Viking’s warranty reads the production date from that serial.
Here is where each format keeps its plate.
FDFZIC7180, FDFZIC7240, FDFZIC7300 and FDFZIC7360. Plate: inside, on the side opposite the door opening.
The freezer drawers of the FDBMIC7360. Plate: inside the refrigerator compartment, opposite the door opening.
The freezer drawer of Viking’s only freestanding refrigerator. Plate: upper wall, behind the lighting.
The freezer side of VCSB5424, VCSB5484, FDSB5424 and FDSB5484. Plate: behind the top light.
One keypad behind the door runs both compartments. One variable-speed compressor cools both. Viking sets the freezer to 0°F at the factory and suggests 0 to 2°F for storage. The sensor codes oPn and Shr are tabled on our Viking refrigerator page.
This freezer has no electromechanical defrost timer. Viking’s adaptive defrost sets its own intervals and stretches them to 96 hours, so a defrost-timer diagnosis does not fit. The defrost heater’s sizzle, hiss or pop is on Viking’s list of normal sounds.
| Indicator | What Viking says it means | What Viking tells you to do |
|---|---|---|
| HIGH TEMP, FREEZER light blinking | The freezer has been too warm for 2 hours | ALARM OFF silences it. The tone stops once the freezer recovers. |
| MAX FRZ lit | Max Freezer is holding the coldest setting | Nothing; it ends on its own after 6 hours. |
| POWER flashing, silent | The power went out | ALARM OFF clears it. |
| SHOW lit | Showroom: the refrigeration system is disabled, though lights and controls work | Hold ACTIVATE CONTROLS, then add HIGHER and ALARM OFF until three beeps. |
| SAB lit | Sabbath: lights, alarms and most of the display off, so a warm freezer stays silent | To leave it, press ACTIVATE CONTROLS, then hold it and DISPLAY OFF 3 seconds. Push the bail arm back down. |
The RVFFR336 cools its freezer drawer with its own system and defrosts each compartment separately. Still, Viking says the refrigerator setting affects the freezer. The door alarm, Vacation and filter settings on this model are covered on our refrigerator page.
| Display | What Viking says it means | What Viking tells you to do |
|---|---|---|
| High Temp Error icon and alarm | After the first 72 hours, the freezer reached 28°F or warmer and did not fall below 16°F within 12 hours | Press Alarm Off, then check that the doors close and seal. |
| Set point alternating with another temperature | The second number is the highest freezer temperature reached | Wait: the icon stays until the freezer is below 16°F. |
| Alarm sounding again | The freezer was still above 16°F 3.5 hours later | If it keeps returning, call for service. |
| Freezer Set | Adjustable from -8°F to 5°F | Viking recommends 5°F, or -4°F when the room is above 86°F. |
| Quick Freeze | The lowest setting, held for 24 hours | It ends on its own. |
| PS 8 | Showroom setting: fans and cooling off, so nothing freezes | Hold Power and Alarm Off together to leave it. |
| Compressor silent after an outage | A thermal safeguard | It restarts after about 6 minutes. If not, call for service. |
| Compressor silent while defrosting | Defrosting is active, which Viking calls normal | Nothing to do. |
Viking’s Veil guide prints messages, not codes, and its table calls the freezer the lower unit. It does not say which label an all-freezer column shows, so read the message itself. The FDBMIC7360 runs two independent compressors. So a compressor running at any time is normal.
A Veil freezer column feeds its ice maker through an external filter under the metal top guard, held by magnets. Viking’s installation guide wants water pressure of 7.25 to 72.5 psi, through the supplied elbow fitting. The spec sheets print 20 to 120 psi and say not to install from them alone, so confirm the range with Viking. Never use a braided stainless hose: Viking warns it strips the solenoid’s thread.
| Message | What Viking says it means | What Viking tells you to do |
|---|---|---|
| Lower unit open | The freezer door has been open a few minutes | Close it. |
| Lower unit too warm | The freezer is too warm | Viking points to its troubleshooting list; the checks below follow it. |
| Lower unit too cold | The freezer is too cold | Wait 12 hours. If it persists, contact Viking’s Customer Service. |
| NO WATER IN | The water was shut off while the ice maker was on | Turn the ice maker off before you shut off the water. |
| Power Failure!! | A long outage; the unit restarted itself and shows its peak temperatures for one minute | Touch ALARM. Switch Max Freezer back on if it was running. |
| Replace filter | The ice maker filter is due, 12 months after the last reset | Turn the ice maker off, fit a new RWFIC, then reset the reminder. |
| CHECK COND. | Condenser cleaning reminder | Clean the condenser, then hold ENTER 5 seconds. |
| Error Code… | Functional problems; Viking prints no code list | Contact support. |
| Demo Mode | Lights and false temperatures, no freezing | Ask the seller; Viking locks it with a password. |
A Viking freezer not cooling right after an outage may still be recovering, and each family flags the outage its own way. Keep the door shut while it recovers. On today’s side-by-side, Viking says food is fine under 24 hours with the door closed.
Viking’s library still lists manuals for its discontinued freezer columns, back to the DDFB, DFFB and VIFB. Those, and the older VCFB304, VCFB530 and VCFB536, are not in the table below.
A discontinued 7 Series all-freezer column in showroom mode stops regulating temperature and hides its fault codes. Its CL indicator means the condenser needs cleaning. The 7 Series FBI7360W bottom freezers sit with their refrigerators on our refrigerator page.
| Models | What the panel shows | What Viking's guide says |
|---|---|---|
| VCFB5304, VCFB5364, FDFB5304, FDFB5364 all-freezer columns | MAX FRZ, DOOR OPEN, HIGH TEMP, oPn and Shr, dSp IcE | The same keypad family as today’s side-by-side. The alarm button resets dSp IcE. |
| FFI7180W, FFI7240W, FFI7300W, FFI7360W and VFI columns; Virtuoso MVFI7180W, MVFI7240W, MVFI7300W | SAB, MAX FRZ, MAX ICE, CL | MAX FRZ runs 6 hours. CL means clean the condenser. |
| VCBB5364, FDBB5364 bottom freezers | oPn and Shr, DOOR OPEN at 3 minutes, HIGH TEMP at 2 hours, POWER | The same keypad family as the 5 Series side-by-side. |
Run the checks above first: the outage, the showroom modes and the doors. A new Veil gets 24 hours to reach set points.
After that, the job is ours. That covers an RVFFR336 High Temp Error that keeps returning, a Veil’s Error Code…, and Lower unit too cold past 12 hours. It also covers a side-by-side HIGH TEMP that returns once the doors and power are ruled out.
The Veil, the side-by-side and the RVFFR336 run on R600a, and Viking’s Veil guide wants repair tools designed for flammable refrigerants. Sealed-system work goes to our EPA-608 certified technicians. I usually start with the plate and what the display showed, since each family reports alarms its own way.
Out of warranty, our insured technicians take it on. Every paid repair carries our 100-day labor warranty on the work on your invoice. We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts. In-warranty work goes to Viking’s warranty service.
When it is ours, book online with the model number and the last thing the display showed.
No CPSC or Viking recall names a Viking all-freezer column, current or discontinued. Three refrigeration recalls do cover older combination units. Doors could detach on certain 48-inch side-by-sides and 36-inch bottom freezers, and wiring could overheat on certain dispenser side-by-sides.
If your dispenser side-by-side falls under the 2013 wiring recall, turn it off and unplug it now. For the door recalls, stop using a unit whose door sags, will not seal, or does not open and close normally.
The model lists and date codes are on our Viking refrigerator recall table, and Viking’s other recalls on our main Viking page. We do not repair a recalled unit. Viking arranges a free in-home repair, so check the model and serial date code with Viking first.
Viking’s indoor refrigeration warranty counts Veil columns, side-by-sides and the RVFFR336 as integrated, built-in or freestanding units. Each gets 2 full years, parts and labor. The sealed system stays covered for parts and labor through year 6, then for the part alone through year 12.
Inside those windows, Viking’s warranty service does the work, and Viking excludes damage from repair by anyone else. Outside them, the freezer is ours to fix. On Veil, door panels over Viking’s weight limits, or a column not secured against tipping, can void the related claims.
Can a Viking freezer sit in an unheated garage?
Viking’s own limits answer that. The side-by-side must not sit where the room drops below 60°F or meets the weather, and the RVFFR336 needs 50°F or warmer. The Veil guide forbids outdoor installation or use.
Why does my Viking freezer sound an alarm after a power cut?
Each family flags an outage its own way. The side-by-side flashes POWER, and ALARM OFF clears it. A Veil shows Power Failure!! with its peak temperatures for one minute.
On the RVFFR336, Viking names a power failure as a common cause of the High Temp Error. It clears once the freezer is back below 16°F.
Why does my Viking bottom freezer always have a compressor running?
On the Veil FDBMIC7360, that is normal. It has two independent compressors, and Viking says one of them running at any time is expected.
Do you repair a discontinued Viking freezer column?
Yes, out of warranty. The older 5 Series and 7 Series columns use different controls, so read us the model from the plate when you book.
Do you repair Viking freezers in my part of Denver Metro?
Yes, anywhere in the Denver Metro Area; the cities are listed further down this page. Book online with the model number and the last alarm the display showed.
Tell us the model number from the plate and what the display or alarm shows. That decides which Viking guide our insured, EPA-608 certified technicians work from.
