On a Viking FWUI5242G, the lower zone can shift when you change the upper one, and Viking built it that way. Viking’s current wine line splits into 5 Series undercounter cellars and Veil columns, and each reports faults differently. Across Denver Metro, our EPA-608 certified technicians handle Viking wine cooler repair on both, and on older units. Outdoor Viking wine units sit outside what we service.
Viking’s current wine units run a compressor on R600a refrigerant. Your model number names the control family.
Beverage centers store wine too. They belong on our Viking refrigerator page. Wine cellars are one branch of our Viking kitchen appliances section, beside the refrigerators, freezers, ice machines and dishwashers in Viking’s lineup.
On the FWUI5152G and FWUI5242G, Viking’s manuals show the plate inside the cabinet, on the left side near the top. The same manuals’ service page says upper wall, behind the light. Look in both places for it.
Viking’s FDWCIC7240 guide puts it inside the compartment, on the side opposite the door opening. That column’s Info System screen also shows the serial number and software code.
The FWUI plate carries a Service Number as well as the serial. Viking’s registration asks for both. In Viking’s titles, FWUI means a panel-ready wine cellar, and a final G a panel-ready frame with glass. On a Veil column, 240 or 300 marks the 24-inch or 30-inch width, and L or R the hinge side.
Viking’s current FWUI undercounter cellars speak in two codes and a door timer. HH means a zone has sat above its setting for an extended time, and LL below it. Viking’s instruction for both is to contact service.
The 15-inch and 24-inch FWUI manuals print the same codes. There is one exception worth knowing. Only the FWUI5242G documents a Showroom Mode, which keeps the display lit while the unit does not cool.
The Veil FDWCIC7240 prints messages, not numbered codes. Its Error Code message points to Technical Service, and Viking publishes no list behind it.
| Display | Viking's meaning | What Viking tells you to do |
|---|---|---|
| HH | High Temp: a zone has been above its setting for an extended time | Contact service for instructions |
| LL | Low Temp: a zone has been below its setting for an extended time | Contact service for instructions |
| Door icon, tone every minute | Door open more than 30 minutes | Close the door |
| °F/°C flashes, display and light stay on | Showroom Mode on the FWUI5242G: the unit will not cool; none documented for the FWUI5152G | Hold the same two keys 5 seconds again |
| °F/°C flashes, then display and light go dark | Sabbath Mode; the unit keeps cooling | Press the Sabbath key to leave it |
| Temperature differs from the setting | The display shows the actual inside temperature, still moving toward the setting | Wait, and let it reach the set point before loading |
| Message | Viking's meaning | What Viking tells you to do |
|---|---|---|
| Power Failure | A long power cut; the unit restarted and saved the highest temperatures reached | Touch ALARM to silence it; the peaks show for a minute |
| Upper too warm or Lower too warm | That compartment is too warm | Check the setting, the condenser, door openings and any large warm load |
| Upper too cold or Lower too cold | That compartment is too cold; Viking’s table misprints the upper one as too warm | Wait 12 hours, then call Customer Service if it persists |
| Error Code | A functional problem; Viking publishes no code list | Contact Technical Service |
| Call Service with a malfunction code | A problem the owner cannot solve | Call service |
| Check condenser | Condenser cleaning reminder, printed as every 6 months in one place and 12 in another | Clean it, then hold ENTER 5 seconds to reset |
| Replace filter | Worded for a water filter; this column uses carbon Air Treat filters, two by Viking’s spec sheet | Replace the one shown under the upper wooden drawer, then reset |
| OFF icon beside a compartment | That compartment was switched off on its own; its fan keeps running | Touch it, choose ON and confirm |
| Closed padlock | A running function has locked the set temperatures | Wait for it to finish or switch it off |
| Initial test | A 3-minute self-check at every start | Wait; on first start, allow 12 hours before loading |
| Demo Mode | A showroom simulation set with a password from Viking | The wine guide does not say whether it stops cooling |
Several behaviors that look like faults are Viking’s design. Each one becomes a call when it outlasts Viking’s timing, such as a gap that remains a day after a setting change.
One rule comes first. If an FWUI cellar loses cooling, Viking says not to unplug it, because heavy frost on the evaporator may be the cause. Cutting the power melts it, and the water can exceed what the defrost drain carries. Viking puts that damage on the owner.
Viking wine cooler troubleshooting then follows Viking’s own checks: numbered for the FWUI, bulleted for the Veil column. Viking wine cooler problems caused by a setting clear with these checks.
On the FWUI5242G the lower zone can never be set colder than the upper, or set more than 20°F warmer. Changing the upper zone can drag it along.
FWUI displays show the real inside temperature, not the set point. A gap means the unit is still getting there; allow 24 hours.
On the FWUI5242G, Showroom Mode keeps the display and light on without cooling. Repeat the two-key command to leave it.
It may have been switched off on its own. An OFF icon shows it, and its fan keeps running.
Viking calls long runs normal in very hot weather or a very warm room.
An older Viking Professional wine cooler may show codes today’s FWUI never uses. Viking still documents several earlier generations, and the table sorts their codes.
The full-height Viking Professional wine cellar VCWB300 and its DFWB300 and DDWB300 siblings run three TriTemp zones from 43°F to 65°F. A showroom switch behind the center grille runs lights and controls with no cooling. Check the power switch after cleaning there. The plate sits on the left wall of the bottom zone, or the right wall on the VCWB301 and FDWB301.
On TruProtect undercounter models such as the VUWC1441, Viking warns that power line fluctuations can show an error code with no fault. Clear it once with the key sequence. If it returns, Viking says to call for service. On the VWUI5150G and VWUI5240G, an Ed code means unplug at once and call: the opposite of today’s FWUI rule.
| Code | Generation and models | Viking's meaning |
|---|---|---|
| E1 | TruProtect undercounter, VUWC1441 family | Compressor fault, high or low amps; one guide also prints E1 for display sensor A |
| E2 | TruProtect undercounter | Condenser fan motor fault |
| E3 | TruProtect undercounter | Sensor B fault; on single-zone units, the evaporator thermistor |
| Eu | VWUI5240G, dual zone | Upper zone sensor |
| EL | VWUI5150G and VWUI5240G | Lower zone sensor; a single-zone unit reads EL too |
| Ed | VWUI5150G and VWUI5240G | Defrost sensor |
| HA | VWCI and FWCI undercounter | High temperature alarm |
| LA | VWCI and FWCI undercounter | Low temperature for over 30 minutes |
| DA | VWCI and FWCI undercounter | Door ajar |
| EE | VWCI and FWCI undercounter | Controller data or memory failure |
After Viking’s checks, HH or LL means a call. So does an Error Code or Call Service message on a Veil. A Viking wine fridge not cooling with every check passed is ours too.
An FWUI frosted over and not cooling is ours. So are a fan hitting a tube, a failed LED or door switch, and a gasket that will not seal. Out of warranty, Viking wine fridge repair is ours on every family on this page, older units included.
Viking wine cellar repair covers the sealed system too. Viking’s Veil guide limits refrigerant repairs to trained people with equipment for flammable R600a, and our EPA-608 certified technicians handle it. I usually ask whether anyone changed the upper zone before I test the lower one on an FWUI5242G.
We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts, and we fit OEM parts when the supplier has the right one. Every paid repair carries our 100-day labor warranty. It covers the work on your invoice. Inside a Viking warranty term, contact Viking’s warranty service first.
Book a repair with the model number and exactly what the display shows.
No recall covers any Viking wine unit, current or legacy. Viking’s recall page lists eight notices, summarized on our Viking brand page, and none names a wine cellar. CPSC’s own records agree with it. For Viking’s own answer, its recall page also takes a model and serial number.
Wine cellars get 2 years of full cover, parts and labor, on Viking’s current indoor refrigeration warranty sheet. The sealed system stays covered for parts and labor through year 6.
The FWUI spec sheet prints the same year 6, while the FWUI manuals still print a twelve-year limited paragraph. We promise nothing past year 6 on an FWUI.
The Veil column is less clear. Its spec sheet adds a limited sealed-system term to year 12 (on Viking’s warranty sheet, the part only; you pay the labor). The warranty sheet could place the Veil under integrated units or under wine refrigeration. On either cabinet, confirm the term with Viking before any sealed-system repair.
While Viking covers the labor, its warranty service does covered repairs and excludes work by anyone else. In a part-only year, ask Viking first who fits a part it ships. Outside those terms, the repair is ours. The same sheet puts Viking’s undercounter refrigerators and ice machines in the FWUI’s class.
Power loss and improper installation are excluded, and so is consequential damage. A custom grille voids an integrated FWUI’s warranty. On the Veil, panels over 75 lb could void it for issues they cause, and self-repair may too.
Why is my Viking wine cooler not cooling?
Start with the temperature setting, then allow 24 hours after any change. An FWUI5242G that stays lit without cooling may be in Showroom Mode.
If an FWUI has lost cooling, leave it plugged in and book a visit. Viking says evaporator frost may be the cause, and its melt can overflow the defrost drain.
What do HH and LL mean on a Viking wine cellar?
On the FWUI5152G and FWUI5242G, HH means a zone has stayed above its setting for an extended time, and LL below it. Viking’s instruction for both is to contact service. If either code stays after Viking’s checks, book a visit.
Why did the lower zone change on my Viking wine fridge?
On the FWUI5242G, the lower zone can never be set colder than the upper, or set more than 20°F warmer. A change to the upper zone can move the lower one, by Viking’s design. Check the upper setting before you suspect a fault.
Can I unplug my Viking wine cooler to reset it?
Not an FWUI that has lost cooling. Viking warns that melting frost can overwhelm the defrost drain. The discontinued VWUI generation is the exception: there, an Ed code means unplug at once and call.
Does a Viking wine cellar control humidity?
In Viking’s documents, only the Veil columns have humidity control; the FWUI documents make no humidity statement. The FDWCIC7240 guide sets it Low, Medium or High per compartment.
Frost in a Veil means a door left open or not closing, Viking says. If it returns with the doors closing fully, book a visit.
Do you repair older Viking Professional wine fridge models?
Yes, once they are out of warranty. That includes the full-height TriTemp cellars and the TruProtect, VWUI and VWCI undercounter generations. Their codes differ from today’s FWUI, so send the model number when you book.
Tell us the model number and exactly what the display shows. An undercounter FWUI and a Veil column report faults differently.
