Samsung Ice Maker Repair in Denver Metro

Samsung sells no standalone ice maker in the United States. Every Samsung ice maker is a subsystem built inside a refrigerator, which is exactly why this page exists on its own. It covers the ice room, the auger, the bucket and the water path that feeds them.

If the cabinet is warm, or the back wall is icing over, the fault is a cooling fault. That work belongs to our Samsung refrigerator repair page and to the general refrigerator repair service page. Ice that stops while the fridge holds temperature is what we handle here.

The split runs like this. Symptoms, the reset walkthrough and the class action live in our full Samsung ice guide, and this page keeps the repair decision.

  • Ice room and auger

The frost, the bucket, the auger drain and the fill tube are diagnosed here.

  • Cooling and the sealed system

A warm cabinet, evaporator frost or a compressor fault belongs to the refrigerator page.

  • Symptoms and the lawsuit

The blog guide carries the reset walkthrough, the cause branches and the class action.

What Actually Fails in a Samsung Ice Room

Samsung wrote a technician service bulletin for this exact failure, ASC20170602002, rev. 2019.04.16. Its title is French Door Direct Cool Ice Maker Frozen, and it covers 2014 to 2018 production units. The symptoms it names are no ice, a frozen ice room, and an ice bucket stuck with frost.

The mechanism is air, not water. Warm moist air reaches the ice room through gaps in the sides and floor, and through the gap at the fill tube. It condenses on the cooling loop and refreezes across the ice room floor, the air channel, the auger and the drain.

The bulletin’s remedy touches these parts, and a technician works through each of them.

  • Gaps in the ice room sides and floor, sealed with Samsung’s own RTV sealant, which the bulletin bars substituting.
  • The gap between the water line outlet and the fill tube, which must not fall under 10mm.
  • The auger drain, whose improved part adds heater tape and a changed drain hole shape.
  • The ice bucket and its gasket, checked for cracks, tears and rubber that has gone rigid.
  • The ice route flapper, which has to stay soft and close fully when the bucket is out.
  • The Y-Clip under the cooling loop, which must point straight down or water pools there and freezes.
  • The main control board, which the service kit replaces alongside the hardware.

Samsung’s bulletin is a French door document by its own title, and no side-by-side equivalent was published. On a side-by-side machine we diagnose from what is in front of us rather than from the bulletin.

One line in that bulletin runs against upselling and is worth repeating. Samsung tells the technician not to order a whole auger motor assembly unless a real defect is confirmed. The drain gets replaced; the motor is replaced only when it has actually failed.

Where the Ice Maker Sits Decides the Whole Job

Samsung publishes five separate reset and test articles for one brand, split by where the ice maker sits. A homeowner reading the wrong one gets nowhere. Identifying the placement is the first thing a technician settles.

Test button by placement
Ice maker placementWhere Samsung puts the Test button
Fridge compartment or side-by-side freezerOn the right-hand side of the ice maker
Bottom freezerAt the front of the bottom of the ice maker
Back of the freezer doorAt the left of the bottom on newer units, on the front toward the left on older ones
Bespoke dual, cubed and Ice BitesUnderneath each maker, above the ice bucket, felt for by hand

On the Bespoke dual units there are two ice makers in the bottom left freezer. Samsung places the ice bites maker on the right and the cubed ice maker on the left. Each has its own test button.

The chime is a real diagnostic signal. One chime means the ice maker passed its test. Multiple chimes is Samsung telling the owner to request service, and that is where we usually get the call.

Ice Codes on a Samsung Display

Samsung publishes a code list and says plainly that it is not complete. The codes below are the ones tied to the ice subsystem, quoted with Samsung’s own meanings. Grouping them by subsystem is our editorial call, not Samsung’s taxonomy.

Samsung ice subsystem codes
CodeSamsung's meaning
8EIce Maker (Freezer) Sensor Error
14EIce Maker Sensor Error
33EIce Pipe Heater Error
39E and 39CIce Maker Function Error
40E and 40CIce Room Fan Error
76CWater is detected in the Autofill compartment
Ice Off blinkingThe ice bucket is not inserted correctly or is not inserted at all

One code trips people up. 5E is Samsung’s Fridge Defrost Sensor Error, not an ice maker code, so it routes to the refrigerator page. The fan, compressor and communication codes route there too.

What the Visit Actually Looks Like

The ice maker does not simply unclip. Samsung’s bulletin runs the technician through self diagnostic mode, then forced defrost mode, then back out of it before the unit is unplugged. That last step keeps the cooling loop from frosting up while the work is done.

The bucket comes out first. Samsung says to lift and pull it out slowly with both hands, and freezer door units use a side handle instead. If the bucket will not seat, Samsung has the technician turn the control on its rear ninety degrees and retry.

With the ice maker out, the inspection list is specific.

  • Traces of water spray in the upper ice room area.
  • Ice in the air flow path, the duct that feeds the ice room.
  • Ice in the drain pipe of the auger motor.
  • Ice on the ice room floor, and a drain that is clear rather than blocked.

Samsung’s instruction on that last point is blunt. Drains must always remain open.

The fill tube gets a step of its own. Samsung has the technician check it for particles using a mirror and remove all of them. No part is needed unless the tube itself is damaged.

Reassembly is the same sequence in reverse, and Samsung specifies audible confirmation. The upper hook and the left hook each have to lock with a click.

The Serial Number Decides the Parts

Samsung’s bulletin keys every parts decision to the eighth and ninth digits of the serial number, not to the model. Two refrigerators that look identical can take different parts. That is the single most useful fact on this brand.

For every model the bulletin covers, production from January 2019 onward carries one instruction: none, please diagnose and troubleshoot. Samsung is saying the bulletin fix does not apply to units built from that point onward. Older serial ranges of the same models take four discrete parts rather than a service kit.

So the correct kit, or the correct set of four parts, is not knowable before someone reads the plate. Samsung puts that label inside the cabinet on the left-hand side, with a second label outside at the bottom left. We diagnose first and quote second, and you decide before any part is ordered.

We source Samsung parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts. Timing depends on whether the supplier has the part, and we say so plainly rather than leave you guessing.

Water Pressure, the Filter and What Normal Looks Like

Samsung’s own US pages disagree about water pressure, so we cite both rather than pick one. The ice maker troubleshooting page states a minimum of 20 psi. The water line installation page states that 30 psi is required for the ice maker to operate properly.

Two symptoms point straight at the water path. Small cubes indicate low water pressure, and dirty ice suggests an expired or damaged water filter. Neither needs a teardown to check.

Cloudy ice is not a fault at all. Samsung attributes it to rapid freezing technology, which traps small amounts of minerals, oxygen and nitrogen.

Production rates are worth knowing too. Samsung gives one tray every 45 to 65 minutes in the fridge compartment. In the freezer it is one tray every 85 minutes. Samsung also says not to defrost the ice maker yourself, because it has an automatic defrost function.

When to Call Wilson & Myers

Four checks take a few minutes, and sometimes they end the problem. Run them before you book anything.

  1. Check the scoop holders on a 4-Door Flex. The side reading REAR must face the ice maker, or they block a sensor and no ice is produced.
  2. Look for a blinking Ice Off icon, which Samsung says means the bucket is not seated or is not there at all.
  3. Note the cube size and the ice clarity, because small cubes point at pressure and dirty ice points at the filter.
  4. Press and hold the Test button. One chime means it passed, and multiple chimes is Samsung telling you to request service.
  5. Do not press Test again once the tray is already full of ice or water, which Samsung warns against directly.

Samsung names affected models including RF23D and RF29D for the scoop holder fault. We have seen a call end right there, with nothing broken at all.

Two things the internet suggests are the wrong move, and Samsung’s bulletin says so directly. Do not use a heat gun or hair dryer, because the plastic liner can melt. Do not unplug the unit for 24 hours either, because that will not clear all the ice.

The bulletin instead requires every trace of ice removed from the ice room and auger area with a steamer. That is Samsung’s own requirement for the repair, and it is why this work sits with a technician. Our technicians are insured and EPA-608 certified, which is the credential that covers refrigerant handling.
