Samsung Freezer Repair on the Standalone Upright

This page covers the Samsung standalone freezer, the tall one-door cabinet that lives in a garage, a basement or a pantry. It does not cover the freezer drawer of a French door refrigerator. Samsung’s standalone line is small, and knowing how small is half the diagnosis.

Samsung sells two of these cabinets in the United States, and a third family shipped before them. All three are convertible uprights of the same capacity. All three will sit at 0 degrees or at 37 degrees depending on a button. That detail ends more calls than any part we fit.

If the machine in question is a French door or top freezer unit, the cold half of it belongs to our Samsung refrigerator repair page. If you want the symptom walkthrough first, our freezer not freezing guide works through the causes in order. This page keeps the repair decision.

  • The standalone upright

The one-door RZ cabinet, convertible between freezer and fridge, is what this page repairs.

  • A refrigerator’s freezer

The freezer section of a French door or top freezer unit routes to the Samsung refrigerator page.

  • Symptoms before you book

The blog guide walks the causes of a freezer that stops freezing, in a technician’s order.

What Samsung Sells, and What It Never Sold

Two standalone freezers are current in the US catalogue, RZ11M7074SA/AA and RZ40H11PETAA. Samsung files both on its own site under refrigerators rather than freezers, which is why owners often look in the wrong place.

The federal ENERGY STAR register is the better list, because it holds what is in homes rather than what is on sale. It carries three Samsung families.

Samsung freezer families
FamilyOn the market fromWhat is filed
RZ11M7074September 202011.4 cu. ft. upright, automatic defrost, no ice maker
RZ11T7474March 202111.4 cu. ft. upright, sold as a Bespoke glass column
RZ40H11PEDecember 202511.4 cu. ft. upright, marketed on Precise Cooling

The oldest Samsung standalone freezer reached the US market in 2020, so there is no long tail of 1990s Samsung freezers in Denver garages. All three families are filed as automatic defrost with no ice maker inside. Of the nine chest freezers on that register, not one wears a Samsung badge.

Samsung’s own naming does not agree with itself. The RZ11M page title calls it a Convertible Upright Freezer Refrigerator, while its actual heading calls it an Upright. Samsung’s parts channel tags the same unit as a refrigerator, and the federal filing for the Bespoke Column calls that machine an Upright Freezer.

Four Calls on This Cabinet That Are Not Faults

The control panel has four buttons, and every one of them can put the cabinet into a state that reads as a breakdown. Samsung documents all four in the RZ11M manual.

  1. Fridge mode. Holding Temp for three seconds switches the cabinet between Freezer and Fridge. The fridge default is 37 degrees, which an owner reads as a freezer that stopped freezing.
  2. Cooling Off, which Samsung also calls Shop mode. The display reads oF, the fan and lights run normally, and the compressor does not. Holding Temp, Power Freeze and Lock together for five seconds enters or leaves it.
  3. Lock. A three second hold disables every control, so the panel presents as dead while the cabinet runs on.
  4. Power Freeze. It holds full fan speed for fifty hours before returning to the previous setting, which presents as a freezer that will not quieten.

That oF is the only display string Samsung documents for this cabinet. Its manual has no error-code chapter, and Samsung’s US code article names no one-door model. Any numeric fault code attached to this freezer came from a different machine.

Garages, Basements and the Number Samsung Publishes Twice

Most of these cabinets in Denver Metro are not in a kitchen. They are in an unheated garage or a basement, and that changes what a warm-cabinet complaint means.

Samsung publishes an installation temperature range for this family, and its own documents disagree about the bottom of it. The RZ11M manual and both spec sheets give 50 degrees. The Column manual gives 38 degrees. All four give 110 degrees at the top.

Read that as the room, not the setpoint. It sits in a list beside away from direct sunlight and away from a heat source. An unheated Denver garage spends much of the winter under 50 degrees, and a west facing one can pass 110 in July.

Lowe’s sells the RZ11M under a page title carrying the phrase Garage Ready. That is the retailer’s wording, not Samsung’s.

Two install faults turn up repeatedly. Samsung recommends more than two inches of gap behind the unit and ships two spacers to enforce it. We find them loose inside the cabinet more often than fitted to the back of it.

The other is level. Samsung requires the cabinet levelled on a flat solid floor, and requires it emptied before you level it. A garage slab is poured with a fall toward the drain, so a garage install is a levelling job by default.

What We Repair on a Samsung Upright Freezer

Once the mode questions are settled, the work sorts into four groups. Samsung’s own troubleshooting pages cover the first two and stop there.

  • Door and seal. Samsung blames frost on the interior walls on a door that is not closing properly, and tells the owner to clean the gasket. A door that latches but seals badly will frost the cabinet without ever tripping the two minute door alarm.
  • Airflow and loading. Frost around the vents is food blocking them, and a warm cabinet with the fan audible is often clearance, overloading or a blocked vent.
  • Lighting. Samsung says the LED lamps are not user serviceable and tells the owner to contact a service centre. A dark cabinet is a booked visit rather than a bulb.
  • The defrost system and the sealed system. Samsung publishes no defrost diagnosis and no component test for this cabinet, which is exactly why the visit exists.

The sealed system on all three families holds R-600a, which is isobutane. Samsung’s own safety page says refrigerant leaking from the pipe work could ignite or cause an eye injury. It tells the reader to keep naked flames away and air the room out.

Door reversal deserves its own line. Samsung sells this cabinet on a reversible door, then states that reversal is paid work it will not warrant if an unapproved party performs it. The door carries a wiring harness, the bottom hinge needs the cabinet laid down, and Samsung asks for two people.

Warranty, the Plate and Ordering Parts

Samsung covers this cabinet in three tiers, and which one your machine sits in decides everything else.

Samsung warranty tiers
What is coveredTerm
Whole unit, parts and laborOne year
Sealed refrigeration system, parts and laborFive years, covering compressor, evaporator, condenser, drier and connecting tubing
Digital Inverter CompressorTen years parts, five years labor

Every RZ11M and RZ11T in the field is past the one year term, because the newest of them reached the market in March 2021. An RZ40H bought new may still be inside it. For that one the first call is Samsung, which routes warranty work through its own service network.

One retail listing for the RZ40H gives the warranty as twelve months parts and labor, with no sealed system tier. Samsung’s own documents are the record. An owner with a four year old cabinet and a sealed system fault has more cover than that listing suggests.

There is no published parts list for either current model. Samsung’s US support pages return no files at all for either one. A technician arriving at one of these has no manufacturer document to work from. We read the full model string off the plate, suffix included, before anything is ordered.

Samsung’s instruction for finding that plate was written for multi-compartment refrigerators, and it names a compartment this cabinet does not have. The exterior label near the lower left front is the one that works, so expect the unit out of its corner. We diagnose first and quote second, and you decide before any part is ordered.

When to Call Wilson & Myers

Five checks take a few minutes and sometimes end the whole problem. Run them before you book.

  1. Read the display. If it shows oF, the cabinet is in Cooling Off, and the five second button combination above brings it back.
  2. Check the mode. A cabinet sitting near 37 degrees is in Fridge mode, and a three second hold on Temp switches it back.
  3. Press any button. If nothing responds at all, hold Lock for three seconds and try again.
  4. Look behind the machine. Samsung asks for more than two inches of clearance, and the two spacers ship inside the unit.
  5. Watch the door seal as it shuts. Frost on the interior walls behind a door that latches is a gasket question.

We have seen a call end on the first two of those, with nothing broken and nothing ordered.

It becomes our job once the mode is right and the cabinet still will not hold temperature. So do frost that returns after a manual clear, a compressor that never starts, and any gas smell. Our technicians are insured and EPA-608 certified, which is the credential that covers refrigerant handling.
