This page covers Frigidaire chest and upright freezers and the Frigidaire Professional column freezer. The model number decides which checks apply: defrost type, control panel, alarms and codes. Once the warranty has ended, the repair is ours. The owner checks below come first.
In the current line, every chest and upright freezer carries the plain Frigidaire badge. All 17 are sold as Garage Ready. Frigidaire chest freezer repair covers six chests that all defrost by hand. Frigidaire upright freezer repair covers 11 uprights, and 2 of those are manual defrost too.
Find the model number on the interior side trim of an upright, or on a chest’s left outside wall above the access panel. Some guides say removing that plate voids the warranty.
One guide covers FFUE2022AF, FFUE2022AW, FFUE2024AN and FFUE2024AW, with either a knob inside or a Temp button outside. Frigidaire’s records do not say which SKU has which. So on a Frigidaire 20 cu ft upright freezer FFUE2024AN, check where the control sits first.
The Professional line adds one column, FPFU19F8W. Its built-in ice maker belongs on our Frigidaire ice maker page. The GRDF1911A column is a Frigidaire Gallery model, covered on our Frigidaire Gallery page.
A Frigidaire side-by-side freezer not freezing belongs on our Frigidaire refrigerator page, as does the FRAE2136A all-refrigerator. Curtis International’s licensed 6.5 cu ft upright and portable coolers carry the Frigidaire name, but they are not Frigidaire units. We do not service them.
Older Frigidaire and Frigidaire Professional freezers are ours too; the table lists the current line because those are the guides quoted here.
Freezers share a branch with refrigerators, ice makers, wine coolers, dishwashers and disposers on our Frigidaire kitchen appliances page.

Frigidaire freezer troubleshooting starts with signs that look broken and are not, per Frigidaire’s guides for the models named.
Frigidaire freezer error codes differ by panel. The six chests carry one code, E2, beside the HI alert, and no current chest guide mentions a Frigidaire freezer thermostat. Their code list names a temperature sensor instead.
How to reset Frigidaire freezer alerts on a chest is simple. The nearest thing to a Frigidaire freezer reset button there is any button: one press clears HI. E2 is a different matter. Frigidaire sends it to your service provider, and out of warranty that can be us.
| Display | What Frigidaire says it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| E2 | Temperature sensor failure | Contact your service provider |
| HI | The inside is warmer than the set level | Press any button, then check the setting and the lid |
| Fb | Freeze Boost is on | Turn it off if the chest runs long or too cold |
| REF or FRZ | The current mode | Hold Freeze Boost and Temp for 5 seconds to switch |
| Blinks twice | Control lock set, or a change tried while locked | Hold Freeze Boost for 3 seconds |
Frigidaire upright freezer troubleshooting starts with the panel. Frigidaire upright freezer error codes appear on FFUV2136A, FFUE1836A and FFUE1536A, and the freezer may keep running through them. No code there tells you to replace a Frigidaire freezer control board, so we test first.
On uprights with a green Power On light, such as FFUE2022A, a Frigidaire upright freezer green light blinking after plug-in is expected. The FFUE2022A and FFUE2024A quick guide says it flashes until the freezer reaches the selected temperature. A Frigidaire stand-up freezer green light blinking days after delivery says the cabinet never got there.
An alarm with a flashing light at the base means a warm cabinet on FFUE1626A, FFUE1326A and inside-control FFUE2022A and FFUE2024A units. The first two flash for an open door too. So a Frigidaire freezer green light flashing and beeping calls for two checks: the door, then the temperature.
What owners call a Frigidaire upright freezer reset button is an alarm reset, and it differs by panel. The table below shows how to reset Frigidaire upright freezer alarms. On a Frigidaire FFUE2022AW 20 cu ft upright freezer with the control inside, opening and closing the door clears it.
Frigidaire upright freezer problems on FRUF2020A and the two 7 cu ft models stay silent. None of the three has an alarm. The Frigidaire upright freezer FRUF2020AW has only a knob inside, so check its temperature yourself.
| Signal | Models | What Frigidaire says | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| E1, E5, E6 or E7 | FFUV2136A, FFUE1836A, FFUE1536A | A sensor error, or a communication failure for E6 | Book a diagnosis |
| LED pairs 1 and 2, 1 and 3, 1 and 4 | FFUV2126A | Temperature, defrost or ambient sensor failure | Book a diagnosis |
| Base light flashing, alarm on | FFUE1626A, FFUE1326A, inside-control FFUE2022A and FFUE2024A | Cabinet too warm | Open and close the door |
| Red High Temp light, alarm on | Outside-control FFUE2022A and FFUE2024A | Too warm, including after an outage | Hold Temp for 3 seconds |
| High Temperature Alarm | FFUE1836A, FFUE1536A | Above 18°F for 36 hours | Press any button, then check the seal and room heat |
| HIGH TEMP or POWER OUTAGE | FPFU19F8W | Warm cabinet, or an outage that may have warmed it | Check the food, then press the lit button |
Start with the power and the control. A Frigidaire freezer not turning on may have a loose plug, a tripped breaker or a blown fuse. The guides specify a 15-amp time-delay fuse as the replacement. A Frigidaire freezer compressor not running may simply be set to OFF, which stops the compressor but not the power.
For a Frigidaire freezer not freezing but running, the guides start with the setting. Turn the control colder, then wait 24 hours. Next come frequent or long openings, a lid or door that does not seat, a large warm load and a recent unplug.
The chest guide gives two cool-down times, 4 hours under one symptom and 24 under another. On FFUE1836A and FFUE1536A, a Frigidaire upright freezer not freezing can stay silent for a long time. Their alarm waits for 36 hours above 18°F.
A Frigidaire stand-up freezer not freezing after those checks is worth a listen. Frigidaire’s support checklist reads compressor hum, fans blowing and refrigerant gurgling as the unit trying to cool. Still warm after 24 hours? The checklist then says to schedule service.
A Frigidaire freezer fan not working is diagnosed on site: no guide names a Frigidaire freezer fan motor or Frigidaire freezer start relay.
A brand new Frigidaire freezer not freezing may still be cooling down. The guides ask for 4 to 24 hours before loading, depending on the model.
Fourteen of the 17 plain Frigidaire models can run as a refrigerator, and each panel switches its own way. Before switching a chest, Frigidaire says to empty and dry it, then wait 6 to 24 hours before reloading. FFUE1626A and FFUE1326A share that wait.
Frigidaire’s catalog describes one-touch conversion on six uprights. The guides for four of them, FFUE1626A, FFUE1326A, FFUE0726A and FFUE0736A, describe a knob or a dial instead.
| Models | How Frigidaire says to switch |
|---|---|
| All six chests | Hold Freeze Boost and Temp for 5 seconds |
| FFUV2136A | Hold the Refrigerator/Freezer Switch button for 3 seconds |
| FFUV2126A | Use the Setting button to pick Fridge |
| FFUE1836A, FFUE1536A | Press the Freezer/Refrigerator Switch button |
| FFUE1626A, FFUE1326A, FFUE0726A | Turn the knob inside to Fridge |
| FFUE0736A | Turn the dial through CONVERSION |
| FFUE2022A, FFUE2024A, FRUF2020A | Do not convert |
Every Frigidaire chest and upright is sold as Garage Ready, which the catalog rates from 0°F to 110°F as a freezer. In a Denver Metro garage, trust your guide instead.
The guides for FFUV2136A, FFUV2126A, FFUE1836A and FFUE1536A set the floor at 38°F, not the catalog’s 0°F. On FFUE0736A, use the coldest setting below 50°F. The FFUE0726A guide warns that below 50°F the freezer may run unevenly and food may thaw.
A generic Frigidaire support article advises against rooms below 55°F, which contradicts Garage Ready. The guides treat a Frigidaire freezer not cooling in a cold room as a placement or setting question, not a failed part. Two of them advise against added compressor heaters.
Summer heat up to 110°F is within the rating, and the chest guide calls longer running normal when it is hot.
Only the chest guides mention altitude: use below 2,000 meters, about 6,562 feet. A chest freezer installed high in the foothills is worth checking against that limit.
Check the garage outlet too. The guides ask for a dedicated, grounded 115 V, 15 A outlet with no extension cord. Frigidaire’s support checklist asks whether a GFI outlet has tripped, while the FFUE0726A guide asks for a non-GFCI outlet.
On the chests and FFUE0736A, the guides say to defrost once frost reaches 1/4 to 1/2 inch. FFUE0726A defrosts by hand too. Its short guide sets no frost thickness. On the frost-free FFUE1626A and FFUE1326A, the guide links frost to a cabinet that is not level.
After a manual defrost, check that both drain plugs are back in. Beads on the outside come from a lid or door left slightly open, or from high humidity. A Frigidaire freezer leaking water past those two causes needs a diagnosis. A Frigidaire upright freezer leaking water on flooring always needs one, since no upright here has a water line.
Frigidaire’s defrost steps for the chests and FFUE0736A:
A chest lid that will not close can start with the floor. Frigidaire says a rocking chest is not level. The cabinet can then distort until the lid no longer fits. A lid lifting at one corner can reseat if you raise it and let it close sharply.
Frigidaire freezer door ajar alarm but door is closed? The guides name two checks: nothing blocking the door, and a level cabinet. The same checks cover a Frigidaire freezer door not closing properly.
Seal leaks lengthen run time, the chest guide says. A dirty, worn or cracked Frigidaire freezer gasket should be cleaned or changed. The support checklist tests for a Frigidaire freezer door seal problem with a dollar bill. Shut the door on it, and a tug should meet resistance.
Reshaping a Frigidaire freezer seal is where one guide contradicts itself. The FFUE0736A guide says to warm leaking sections with cool air from a hair dryer. Ask us before trying that.
A Frigidaire freezer door not sealing after cleaning and leveling is our job. Replacing a Frigidaire freezer door gasket is part of that work.
A Frigidaire freezer not working after the checks above needs a technician.
Check the delivery date before you book, because work inside the warranty term goes to Frigidaire’s warranty service.
Frigidaire freezer problems that survive those checks are ours. That means any E code or LED pair, a Frigidaire freezer high temp alarm that keeps returning, or a cabinet warm after 24 hours.
The sealed system is ours too. Frigidaire’s product records list R-600a, and its guides say a unit with this flammable refrigerant is to be repaired only by trained service personnel. Our insured technicians are EPA-608 certified, and we confirm which sealed system parts your model takes before recommending that work.
We source parts through national supplier networks and manufacturer contracts, and we fit OEM parts when the supplier has the right one.
I have seen a hand-defrosted chest left with its drain plugs out, and the puddle blamed on a failed sealed system. Our Frigidaire freezer repair service starts at the model number and the display instead. Have both ready and book your freezer repair online.
The code, the lit indicators, and whether an alarm sounds.
Freezer or refrigerator mode, and whether it stands in a garage.
One year of parts and labor from delivery, two on the Professional column, and the warranty never covers food loss.
No Frigidaire freezer H1 code appears in the current freezer guides. A chest display shows HI, the letters H and I, for its High Temperature Alert, and any button clears it. The uprights with a display use E1, E5, E6 and E7 instead. Read us the exact characters when you book.
It depends on the model. A chest resumes its settings except Freeze Boost. The full-size chest guide says food stays frozen at least 120 hours with the lid closed, and the compact guide says 36. Frigidaire’s catalog gives the compact models up to three days.
On outside-control FFUE2022A and FFUE2024A units, a High Temp alarm may follow. Hold Temp for 3 seconds to clear it. On the Professional column, check the food, then press POWER OUTAGE.
On a chest or FFUE0736A, defrost by hand at 1/4 to 1/2 inch, using the steps above. A frost-free upright defrosts itself. Heavy ice there means checking the door seal and leveling first.
Some of it is expected. The guides call popping, cracking, bubbling and gurgling normal, along with a louder compressor on the chests. For rattles, level the unit and pull it off the wall. A Frigidaire freezer making loud buzzing noises may also be an alarm, which one support article calls a buzzer sound.
